I'm German, and writing this from Austria, where I live now. My mom was born in 1944. In the years after WWII they used to mix sawdust with flour for baking bread, from the same reason they baked sawdust pie in the US during those years of depression. So, let us be happy and most greatful to the Lord our God that we don't have to eat this, at least in the Western World - who knows for how long. May God grant His peace, and my we accept His grace.

Thank you so much for joining us from Austria. My husband is German, though he's lived here since he was a child.
Yes, we are truly blessed that it isn't necessary to go to such extremes to survive. And I pray that we never have to experience such times.
Bless you and thank you for sharing and may God keep His hand upon you. ❤❤

I think the Keto breads on the market these days are actually using something like sawdust - to keep the carbohydrates down. They call it fiber but, still the same thing. What goes around comes back around!

It's called sawdust pie because during the depression days one of the ingredients was actually sawdust. Sawdust was used as a filler and often times it was made by people who lived very rural and harvested their own nuts from the woods around them, plus they had yard chickens that provided the eggs. They didn't use coconut very often since that wasn't a staple in most kitchens. I'm up there in yrs now but I remember hearing folks talk about that pie. Sugar was rationed or non existent for poor people but they could use their own homemade cane syrup, maple syrup or honey from wild bees. My mom grew up during the depression on the family farm and even after the country was coming out of it you could only find coffee with chicory . They had to be creative cooks to feed their families when there were no huge grocery stores with anything your taste buds desired.

It's like grass bread. In England during WWII the British used to feed German prisoners bread made of finely chopped grass, finely chopped nuts if any could be found, etc. It was recreated on The Farm Series The Edwardian Farm, and it came out a very dense, heavy loaf of 'bread'. But it kept everyone alive, and they said it was tasty and edible. Probably tasted like greens.

There are only 2 differences to my recipe: 1 is I parbake my crust for 8 minutes lined with aluminum foil at 450 degrees, then remove foil and bake 4 minutes until golden. Set aside to cool. 2 is I beat the egg whites until just foamy and then blend them into the rest of the ingredients and bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

I'm thinking raisins or craisins would be yummy, especially if they have soaked a few hours in Captain Morgan 😮😊 Also, if it seems dry to someone, I would bet making a custard cream (with those yolks..) would be incredible spooned over it. You are KILLING ME!!❤

I make squares similar to your filling. Original receipe was for a Graham cracker crumb crust and though it was good, to me it tasted almost exclusively of Graham crackers so I substituted vanilla cookies for the crust, use fresh coconut blitzed in the food processor, exclude nuts and substitute chopped maraschino or glacé cherries and orange rind. Top with a thin orange icing. People seemed to like it.
Every couple decades I find a receipe I had for something called “dream whip squares”. It was a popular wedding confection back in the 50s when I was a child. Had nothing to do with fake whipped cream from the freezer section and contained a can of fruit cocktail, maraschino cherries, and coconut topped with icing made from the cherry syrup.
I’m game to make the pie and will likely use a coconut and probably not the nuts of any variety but perhaps dried orange bits.

I would try it exactly like you did first - then I would probably try to mix it with a Japanese Fruit Pie (just google that) and make two pies out of the mixture - just think they might meld well together. Japanese Fruit Pie has a small amount of apple cider vinegar in it - and it really reacts nicely with the sugar - I would put double the vinegar for the two pies to get the full effect. Then, of course, I might decide to just go back to the original - who knows??

What do you do with all the egg yolks after you’ve got a cup of egg whites?

Thank you for your question! That batch I used to add to breakfast burritos the next morning. But they are perfect for custards, baking in pastries that call for extra yolks, egg noodles, etc. They can be frozen individually and then reused in recipes later, too. ❤️

LAWD You scared Me. I was like, WHO on Earth is eating *_"Sawdust"_* Pie?!!?
I clicked, *_and glad I did._*
This Recipe reminds Me of something I would make just by happenstance. Lately, I have to remind Myself to write down or video record My Recipes, My Son wants to have all My recipes before I die. Most of the time I cook/bake without any Recipe. That's how My Great-GrandMother, GrandMothers & Father Cooked due to always having the kitchen stocked with many different ingredients *to be **_CREATIVE._*
My Mother was a Recipe-Book Cook/watched Cooking Shows. My Daughter the same way.

Hahahaha! I'm glad you clicked, too!
Yes, I'm a "what do I have to throw together" kind of cook, most of the time. My husband sometimes asks, "What's this called?", when it's something I've made from this and that. "Supper." 😄
I have cookbooks and recipes, but they're more guidelines for me. Ha!
It sounds like we have a lot in common and thank you for taking the risk and clicking! 🤗❤️

      @@mountainpatriothomestead - I'm relieved that I clicked, Yes Indeed.
I tell My Family when they ask, *_"I made some magic."_*_ (not Devilishly, just saying)._
You may be aware of a Cook show called *_"CHOPPED"_* My Cousin loves to watch. I said to her one eve watching 1st time with her: _"That's what We already do? I should go on that show. I know I'll win. Because I can combine food ingredients effortlessly."_
I've been cooking since I age 6. It used to amaze Me in My Life encountering people teens/adults not knowing how to cook. All the Boys & Men in family COOK.
About Cook books - I am so bad, I'll collect recipes book/paper/digital and rarely ever cook the recipes.

Hey, just found your video. the name intrigued me. I just had to watch. lol. well first off, I love me some coconut and walnuts. lol I will definitely have to fix this. After reading some of the comments I just had to go back and see the freckles. I think I have more than you do but I'm getting old woman skin now, so I liked yours better, lol Hope you have a blessed day.

I'm so glad you found us! And certainly let me know what you think when you make the pie.
As far as the freckles, I've had them all my life and that's why I just laugh when someone says something about them. 😄
Thank you for watching and your sweet comments. Blessings to you, as well. ❤️❤️❤️
