Very interesting pie. They did make do with what they had back then. I feel these will be made again real soon. Appreciate you for showing us these recipes.
A basic Roux is flour, water, and butter, which is a basic thickener for gravy, soups, stews, and other meals like mac and cheese. The addition of sugar basicaly makes it a sweet roux, just in a pie form.
WOW, I'm thinking the Beautyberry bush berries would be wonderful inside this pie. They are so small, you can only juice them and they are neon purple so very pretty, too. That is next on my list to try. I should try it plain first but I have a jar of beautyberry unset jelly open for the top of yogurt and will add the remainder inplace of the water. What fun! Thanks for all your inspiration!
As simple as that is, I wonder if using brown sugar or maple sugar would be interesting too. Or adding pecans. Or maple extract in place of the vanilla? TONS of experiments!
That actually looks pretty yummy! I never would have thought to make that! I love those old depression recipes! They were so creative! I definitely am going to make this!
Hi. I laughed at the idea of the concept of water pie, but was curious. I followed your instructions and baked my own. Actually, not bad. More of a novelty item, but thanks for the video and a new version of what pie can be. I'm going to share this with my skeptical coworkers.😊
Haha, when I first saw this posted, I thought maybe it was like an April Fool's joke but in January (sooooo... maybe a Pie Collab in April and start with this one, lol... ???). My grandma preferred to make cobblers rather than fuss with pie crust ~ except for the deep dish apple pie she would make for my dad ~ but I bet somebody in the family had the recipe This would definitely be a fun thing to take to a fair. As other comments have noted, lots of inspiration and potential for experimentation. But I also like the idea of keeping it simple and trying different toppings after it comes out of the oven and fridge. Thank you for sharing. This made my day! 😊💖
One of the guys at work makes wonderful pies! (It was a business he did when he was in high school) I keep trying to get him to use some of these unconventional recipes. Lol!
I seen your video on water pie. I have seen quite a few people on the internet making them. So I am going to make one today. Hope it turns out as good as yours.
You don't have to use a store bought crust. Make your own. It's just not something I'm really good at, so instead of getting frustrated with it, I make it easier for myself.
Looks good. I never heard of it before. H20 pie...who knew?!
Water pie?? it looks delicious, I will have to try that. Thanks for sharing!! 👩🏽🌾👍🏽🙏🏽🧡💖

Amazing, our grandma’s were very creative cooks, who would have thought !
My grandmother used to make this. Surprisedly good.
Such a magic recipe. I think I might stir the vanilla into the water before pouring it into the crust. ❤
Very interesting pie. They did make do with what they had back then. I feel these will be made again real soon. Appreciate you for showing us these recipes.

Your Water Pie looks like the best one I've seen! I wonder if the mixing of flour and sugar is the "secret"? Very tasty, I'm sure.

I could not believe this. I tried it and was blown away. My kids gave it an 8 out of 10.
I have seen a couple people make these. I haven't tried to make one yet but I plan on it when I get to my goal weight!

Fascinating! Thanks for this!
PS, pecan pie without the pecans is chess pie. 😁
I love chess pie
@@sandramulchahey8268 Ditto!
I think I would have just mixed the vanilla in with my water first. Interesting.
Wow! Did not think it would thicken up like that! Unfortunately water goes straight to my hips but sure looks good! Haha
I seen your video on water pie. I have seen quite a few people on the internet making them. So I am going to make one today. Hope it turns out as good as yours.
Have fun!
@@2leelouCreates Thanks. Have you ever tried putting nuts in it? And if so how did it turn out?
@@2leelouCreatescould I use orange juice instead of water
@@LisaT-i2m You could try it. I don't really know for sure.
@@2leelouCreates ok thank you
Wow , I never heard of a water pie . ??
My gma snd great gma used to make that and pinto bean pie
Looks strange but I may try it
a cup and a half of lemonade or orange juice in place of just water would be an interesting variation
I think it would be really good with added pecans. Then topped with a scoop of butter pecan ice cream
Omg how simple is this. I would add cinnamon and 1/2 brown sugar and regular sugar. 🥧
I wonder what it would be like if you dumped some nuts (pecans) on top, after the butter, before baking.
Almost like a cross between a custard and a nougat, without the egg
Why can't the vanilla be stirred into the water in the beginning?
I assume it's because it boils in the shell, and that kind of activates the thickening and distributes the ingredients evenly.
Store bought crust. Not my thing. I’d rather not have pie without homemade crust.
