  • This is a recipe for Poverty Pie that goes all the way back to The Great Depression, maybe even farther. My Mom grew up during The Great Depression. Like many children did at the time, she dropped out of school in the mid-1930's, at the age of 14, to get a job and earn money for the family. She became a cook and housekeeper for a wealthy family. That is where she learned how to cook American food and when her life-long love of collecting recipes began. This is a very simple recipe to make and requires only a few very basic ingredients.

When you mentioned kids having to drop out of school and work reminds me of my parents. They told us they had to drop out and work to help out too. I think 8th grade was the furthest my Dad went. My Mom too but can't remember when she had to quit school. They didn't have a diploma but they provided for 6 kids and themselves. They always had a garden too. We always had something to eat even if was beans and rice and homemade cornbread and veggies from the garden and handme downs to wear from family. Looks good Grandpa.

It was very common for children to quit school and help out the family. My Mom worked for a lovely couple that had no children and they treated her like a daughter. She always talked very fondly of them. Thank you for sharing about your parents. Grandpa was happy to hear you liked his pie❤️👩🏻

It’s so amazing what can be done with so little! I make custard pie but use 5 egg yolks. It’s ingenious to use the thickening power of flour to stretch the yolks! I will absolutely try this, with a pinch of nutmeg in the custard.

Well this one certainly looks "easy as pie"! I'm always so happy to watch your uploads--- they remind me of the way I grew up, simpler recipes for a simpler time. We had chickens on the farm, so always plenty of eggs, and lots and lots of delicious baked custards to use them up. We never bothered to make a crust to go along with all that custard!
I wonder if your mom lived around this general area? I know it was common when my mom was young for people in the Gold Coast mansions to still have live-in employees. A friend of hers lived over the stables at a famous heiress's, which is now a (state?) park. Another friend's dad's family also lived or worked at another big estate, and he met his wife there. This would have been around the late 1920s-1930s, maybe up through early 1940s time frame.
Thanks, Grandma and Grandpa, for another winner!

I love to watch these videos ❤️👍😁…thank you for sharing them….I think many of us will need to start cooking on a regular basis like this soon…even though I hope I’m wrong…and it reminds me of how my grandmother cooked and I would much rather eat that way then to try to survive on a bunch of junk food 😁
    God bless ❤️

Thank you for sharing about using a banana. I know Grandpa would like it but not me because I was a banana baby. I was born a small baby and the Doctor told my Mom to feed me bananas.
