I like how alien all these GM moves in chess look to someone like me that is around 1200, but after someone indicates and explains (like Ben beautifully does) all the ideas behind these moves, they make perfect sense and they are actually most of the times, pretty simple ideas and generally simple chess. Not trying to think 100 moves ahead like a machine does - because you are not playing a machine, so that's unnecessary. But it takes a lot of good tactics and good chess knowledge, to play like a super GM. These guys make it look simple, it's amazing.
I suspect when you play for hours every day over many decades, a lot of the tactics and game patterns come naturally without needing to think. So even though the ideas are simple, there's a lot of them, and the super GMs have burned them all into their memory. But I'm not a super GM so what do I know.
"We talk about super GMs a lot. 'That guy's tall; that guy's ugly; that guy doesn't smell good.' That covers about all of them." Hahahaha. I guess Kramnik and Short smell just fine.
I loved that comment "World championship matches often feature black trying to draw and white trying to win. And there´s exceptions when Kasparov and Fisher were playing world championship matches." But those two played on a level over SGM´s.
Lol this man is so funny and I'm glad he does not beat about the bush. It's really annoying when these top GMs play the same long and boring opening lines over and over again, especially when they scratch their heads during a game trying to remember the moves instead of using their own thick skulls. arg, Terrible
I hope even elite chess players keep blundering, that's what makes an interesting game as not every bad move results in an instant loss. So +1 for more rapid ~25min time control, or the engine generation will play perfect games with Berlin defense .. yawn.
Great lecture as always Ben. Congrats on losing so much weight man, good for you! Did you finally realize your 3rd mistake in life... not being a real vegetarian ;)
Best commentary, humor and insight.
SO FKN TRUE, MAN! SWINEGOLD JUST RULES, HAHAHA!
ben delivers fine gold once again!

Anand was the undisputed world champion in 2010. Kramnik unified the title by beating Topalov in 2006.
Good lecture, but incredibly boring game imo.
Ben doesn't like Anand's style of play
