    I have a 2500 '04, so love that you're doing an older Cummins! My biggest improvements have been to address the Gen 3 Ram weaknessess: unreliable diesel fuel pump, poorly engineered front end that leads to the "death wobble", and the front wheel unit bearings. So: FASS Titanium fuel pump, upgraded front end with steering brace, Carli track bar, Bilstein shocks & steering stabilizer, then the best move was a Spyntec free hub kit. Just did the injectors and exhaust system. 215k miles & hoping for many more years. Hauls great but I will say is poor offroad due to the front end weight, size, and low differentials. Can't wait to see what you do with yours.

    • @_FreedomSeed
      @_FreedomSeed 2 месяца назад +1

      YES, 100% but stay away from Carli imo. They make a decent product but are over-priced and absolutely will not fulfil warranties on parts. Even if they aren't ever installed because they were out-of-spec.

    Change the fuel pump and when you change the brakes, use Mopar pads. Coming from someone that Purchased a 1999 2500 4x4 new and a 2005 3500 dually 4x4 new prior to getting my current 2017 3500 dually. Never had engine or trans issues out of either earlier model truck. Both needed a fuel pump and front hub bearings by 150k miles. My 1999 was harsh on brake pads, once a mechanic friend told me to use nothing but mopar pads, no more brake issues.

    I love my older dodges. Had a 12 valve I should’ve never got rid of but please don’t advocate for people towing 20k lbs with that. Can it do it. Absolutely. Is it legal. Not at all. Have to check the numbers but pretty sure that’s roughly 5-6k over what it’s rated for. Just the legality of things. If there was an accident and someone is towing over what it’s rated for probably wouldn’t be good legally. Love the content keep up the hard work

    Mike, I have a 2004 Dodge 1500 4x4 that I gave to my dad to use. One very important thing to look at is the 4x4 lever linkage that connects the manual lever to the transfer case. There is a known issue where the rubber grommet rots and the linkage falls off. It has done that to my 1500 3 times in the 11 years I have owned it. There are videos on how to make a linage that wont fall off. I would say that is a very important upgrade in the near future so you dont get stuck expecting to have four wheel drive and you dont.

    @bravowhiskey4684 2 месяца назад +1

    I had an 01 srw dodge. Great truck, and I miss it terribly. However, there are some serious achilies heels to consider in the second gen trucks:
    Avoid trucks with the 53 series engine block, as they crack and fail. Find out if the truck has had the “killer dowel pin” fixed or removed and do so if not. Stud the head if running bigger turbo. Check for broken exhaust manifold. Check for bad intercooler boots.
    1998.5-2002 VE / VP fuel injection pumps are not the best. There is a P-pump conversion available, which converts to the first gen mechanical pump. Or buy a pre 1998.5 truck with the 12v engine. A p-pump converted 24v is a monster though, worth the hassle.
    There are no true crew cabs, and only 98.5-up trucks have working back doors. The doors use a bicycle brake type cable to activate the handles, they break frequently. Cabs are prone to getting out of door alignment if you’re running a high torque build and constantly hot rodding the truck or racing. They also break windshields and heater cores the same way.
    The 1994-2001 trucks have a center-axle disconnect device in the front. It makes the axle weak, and is prone to breaking. You can do a bypass or mechanical actuator conversion. The axle hub unit bearings are also generally trash, get good replacements or do a hub conversion.
    The lift pumps on these trucks had problems too. Switch to a FASS or airdog type system.
    The 46re automatic transmission isn’t great. The NV4500 manual 5-speed is, but are prone to losing 5th gear. The NV5600 six speed is excellent. New Venture Gear is now out of business, and there are few repair parts available for the transmissions.
    The steering geometry sucks, and the components are junk, so expect bump steer and death wobbles. Convert to the 2009+ style tie rod & drag link, and get quality all-metal tie rod ends like those from XRF. Get the steering box brace, and the adjustable track bar too. Get XRF ball joints installed as well.
    Expect to rebuild your steering pump / vacuum pump assembly. They are prone to shaft seal failure.

    That truck has the vp44 injection pump. They’re notorious for failing and is very expensive to replace. In order to keep that pump as healthy as possible I’d recommend installing a fass fuel system. That will ensure you always have adequate fuel pressure going to the pump.

Man I could really steer you right with that. I have been through it with that ttuck. FASS or Air Dog pump. I have Air Dog, it works good and they support the product. Vulcan can supply the upgraded fuel sending init for the upgraded fuel pump. I built mine, it was very time consuming. I learned about Vulcan after I did it. Anyway... have fun.

    We live on a farm so the tri fold style bed covers just don't work. A company f150 has a revolver roll up but it's got an aluminum base. I've never understood people people who just upgrade to a different steel bumper without a grill guard.
    Being a 2001 it's a VP44 truck so it would get an upgraded lift pump #1, upgraded vp44 #2, Tow Mirrors #3 but really kinda of a sudo #1 especially with 3500 hips, exhaust because cummins #4. I would also upgrade suspension if I had the money, Carli or Thuren. I was down the tuner road in the past, I'd maybe lean towards some upgraded hard parts. You're up North so I'd probably lean towards Buckstop bumpers

Biggest problems have been complete rebuild of the front end every 100K and fuel pumps. First factory full pump died with 15 miles on it. Since then I think it has been 5 or 6 with the last 2 being aftermarket high pressure located by the transfer case. The only thing I wish it had is a limited slip diff. I will never sell this truck and will just keep fixing it. It is electric blue.

    If it’s a automatic transmission I would invest in a hypertec transmission pan it allows you 4 quarts more transmission fluid and keeps the transmission a lot cooler that transmission was the week link in that truck unless it was the standard transmission which the 5 speed had trouble with a nut backing off of the counter shift if you have the $ have sun coast transmission build you a drop in Alison 1000 for it

    I'm digging this rig a little too much...
    Manual or auto transmission?
    If it doesn't already have an aftermarket lift pump, put one on.
    Install a manual cable to engage the 4x4. Prevents vacuum problems and I used 2wd Low a lot...
    Spare parts to carry on board:
    Serpentine belt, fuel filter, oil filter, a bottle or 2 of oil, jug of coolant. Bonus if you carry enough oil for a complete oil change. From experience I had a the power steering pump bolt back out on the 1999 version of that truck and had just enough spare oil to make it to a store to get more oil, to then go find a bolt.
    Of course the more on board fuel the better.
