  • Video games are meant to be Fun. Call of Duty became the most popular game in the world through leading the industry with innovation. In recent years, however, it has relied on nostalgia and remastered content to remain the best-selling game in the world. Rather than continue to innovate and create the best games possible they rely on a successful formula built around returning old content and skill-based matchmaking. And why would they change when it works so well?
Cod (modern warfare 3, mw3) specifically has always been a casual, arcade shooter, and yet, in recent years it feels anything but casual. Long gone are the days of returning home from work and sitting down for a relaxing game of Call of Duty. It feels although a large portion of the Call of Duty community complains everyone "sweats" while simultaneously sweating themselves.
COD in 2009 was a cultural icon largely responsible for taking video games as a whole, in to the mainstream popularising things like multiplayer games, video games on youtube and in general fostering a community like no other. During this time it was so positively revered but when you look at what call of duty has done for the gaming industry since, its... not a lot. instead they hold on to things that made them successful in the past like remastered maps, guns, and characters. as well as implementing engagement based matchmaking (worse than skill based matchmaking).
The problem is now it tries to position itself as a live service game despite coming out with a new full price game every year. And not only this but truthfully, even if call of duty was free, times have changed its no longer 2009 and video games must continuously innovate to keep up with the times, and cod does not do that.
While every other video game in the shooter genre embraces competitive play, cod discourages it and gets away with it. SBMM is designed to maximise your retention as well as The amount of money you spend in the game on bundles and other microtransactions. and they can only use this because it is still considered a "casual" shooter.
Every other fps in the market has potential for growth. What this means is that they consistently try to make the best game possible to maximise customers. Call of duty in comparison is simply trying to retain its possition as the biggest fps on the market, and so what we get every year is limited innovation, rushed projects that follow a set formula that has been proven to work.

Call of Duty lost a lot of what made it special and it's caused by the modern gaming / live service trend that puts all the focus on crazy skins and crossovers that have no place in the universe of the game. The games used to have character and soul, but not anymore. They all neglect the theme and makes them a lot less unique, special and memorable.

I fully agree. It’s such a minor thing but I remember when I used to be able to recall all the associated challenges with each calling card and emblem. Now they just serve as filler in bundles. - again it’s minor but when a bunch of little things like that are sacrificed, the game does lose its soul

After many years I finally quit. Sold my Xbox, headset, etc,. Sweaty is one thing, silly characters where does it end? It’s NOT THE COD I want to play. It’s all about bundle packs and silliness. Just quit you’ll feel a lot better and have extra pocket change. MW3 SU KS

I’m still having fun here and there. I just wish they implemented a better system to eliminate hackers for good. People need to have more faith in themselves to play competitively without the use of hacks. The hacks kill the fun of the game more than anything tbh. It’s rampant as well. When you get into a good lobby and games remain close and competitive is when it’s the most fun. When every single LMG round that leaves the opponents weapon is glued to you from aimbot at 500 M it’s ridiculous. The skins are getting more cringey as well and it really makes it feel like we’re not playing the “military style” shooter game we want.

I think that’s the key to be honest is playing in moderation. Just recognising when it’s not fun and hoping back on when it is.
Honestly I hear all the talk about hackers but that’s never really been an issue for me personally (excluding warzone). I can definitely understand the frustration with that though. I definitely seem to be one of the lucky ones.
And I agree with the skins part. Bo1 was my ideal game when the character skin was dependent on your perk 1 slot. The skins will keep getting crazier as long as they keep earning money though 🥲

I still play the game because of habit. When I was younger, BO2 era, playing COD was a huge part of gaming as a whole. When I wanted to cool of I « played COD » (MW3, BO2…). Playing the latests COD meant having a ton of fun. I’ve played MW2019 this month to « play COD » and never I’ve I been so frustrated with a game. I guess I need to say goodbye, « playing COD » simply isnt what it used to.

That’s how I feel man. It’s kind of sad because those games still EXIST and new ones are still being made. I hate to pessimistic but it’s hard to see it getting better as long as they are able to make so much money through sacrificing the quality of the game.
It used to be release a game and if it was good people bought it. Now it’s so much more complicated

Warzone, Apex, and Fortnite all have one thing in common (ok maybe a few things but one main thing): a consistent player base. I agree that you should stop playing a game you aren't having fun with. However, look at the alternatives. If I'm not having fun playing one game that hasn't really changed in 5 years, my other option is to... play another game that hasn't really changed in 5 years. The reality is that the industry has gone stale. Studios are obsessed with finding that live service cash cow that they can sit on and update every so often without having to make something entirely new. While some people like this, I disagree with it. The lack of "new" means less innovation. That's exactly where we are.
As for COD, they are one game away from losing 20-30% of their player base and maybe even more. They rely on the stale market to keep their numbers consistent. Destiny came along 10 years ago and completely disrupted their model. Other games like PUBG and Apex did the same. That forced their hand to create Blackout and then Warzone. It will happen again, but it feels like it's taking FOREVER. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I actually agree with you for the most part. - I think you may be more correct than me in saying that a lot of other games also haven’t changed much in the past few years either since they are live service where there definitely is a push to move towards those types of games and it is for sure at the detriment of the games themselves, just look at the suicide squad game as an example.
Where I differ is that I think some of those game are innovative. Especially when compared to call of duty. I personally do not like Fortnite for example but it cannot be criticised for not being innovative enough and it has had tremendous influence in the gaming landscape as a whole (some good, some bad).
Call of Duty by comparison still releases a new full price game every year that either copies other games or remasters content and doesn’t itself innovate. Similarly however, I think what you were getting at was that the other live service games don’t change much since they are still at their core the same game. And you’re right. But hopefully with things like the finals and xdefiant releasing soon, they can mix it up a bit. (And then like you said, disruption means cod will copy them lol)

@@Zebjely I agree with all of that. You make some great points. This is a nearly identical conversation myself and my friend JoeyJFace have had recently! I completely forgot about xdefiant. I also think Marathon will either be a genre defining game or a complete flop. 2024 and 2025 is shaping up to be an interesting year for FPS. If COD isn’t scared they absolutely should be.

Because there is nothing like it... everything is BR, everything is no-respawn CS2 style, everything is focused on rank and Esports. While yes, COD does have an esport and a ranked mode, it is never the priority even today. I just want a casual 6v6 game with guns that won't shut down or sell out or become esport-focused. And COD, while being stressful, I know they won't change from the basic gameplay loop because, well, look at the past: every time they had a chance to switch up the formula, they didn't. Does the game suck? Yes! But I know that it will never change. What I play today will be the same in 10 years, and it gives me comfort knowing that. I hate modern gaming and cod, while still being part of the new "era" still has that same good old formula that I love so much but also hate for having no innovation. That is why I will keep playing it because...what is there else to play? (English is not my native language so sorry if I sound a bit rough)

Just wanted to add that what also used to be so fun for me was Overwatch, but look what happened. They opened their esport league, and now it will never be the same again. Everything is competitive-focused, matches are more strict. For me, all the fun is sucked out in favor of competitive. It is not the same casual game I fell in love with in 2016.

    • @Zebjely
      @Zebjely  5 месяцев назад

@@bigbootylatina130 you make some good points here. I fully understand where you’re coming from in saying the same gameplay loop gives you comfort. I think for me personally I always found comfort in the mechanics and movement style of call of duty. Especially because I feel there are other similar games out there but they will never have the same fluidity that call of duty does.
The problem is call of duty isn’t the same as it used to be. Sacrificing more of what made it great in favour or money and micro transactions each and every year. So when do you decide enough is enough because the problem is it’s NOT the same, it’s getting worse.

@@bigbootylatina130 regarding your overwatch comment as well, can’t the same logic be applied to call of duty with skill based matchmaking? The matches are getting more and more strict. The only difference is cod doesn’t have the “competitive” label attached to it.
Personally, If they’re going to make me play competitively I want to at least be told that. Not put up with it in secret

Activision support is absolute ass today. The games are still alive only because of the nostalgia and their history, if they were starting from zero they’d have no fan base. The large fan base is thanks to the original developers and producers. I beat myself up for continuously playing this, along with other things like FIFA, same story.
