  • This one was a nail biter, with a southbound train approaching. Thankfully, the crew was alerted to the vehicle and came to a complete stop in time. Elderly couple from out of town on a rainy night, big mistake!

    There was a crossing in Mineola along the LIRR that had this same problem, road that was right next to the tracks, and people turned on to the tracks, thinking they turned onto the road. The Long Island Railroad put up Delineators in between the tracks, to stop people from doing this, and so far, it seems to be working.

    • @num1hendrickfan
      @num1hendrickfan 6 лет назад +3

      Freedomtower Studios they’ve done that for all rail crossings on the LIRR system. The only issue myself and others find with the LIRR approach is that it doesn’t fix the problem which is motorists blinded by gps systems and lacking some basic common sense at a very bad time.
      Those white delineator poles will quickly become a liability when the next train versus car happens and they’re turned into projectiles.

      The crossing is inactive, its devices do not stand out much, I do not see strikingly visible warning signals to the left and right of the crossing, actually none on the left. With intense rain and near-darkness, road markings are hard to see, and with light reflections on them, practically impossible. So again, this crossing can benefit from better signalling, which should still be possible within such little room.

      They might get hit by a train while attempting to back out of their mistake. If you find yourself stuck on the tracks, first thing is to get out! Next, call the phone number on the small sign attached to the crossing sign post. Let the railroad know you are stuck, and give them the location ID number on the sign so they know where you are. They will stop all trains so you won’t get hit! Now that you are out of danger, you can deal with your car without the mind-altering stress of thinking a train might come at any moment.

    You do have to account for people who are not acquainted with the area. If a church van or visiting school bus with a team or fans were to get stuck and many kids killed, the state or federal government would step in and that would be the end of the tracks through Ashland.
    It looked like the driver tried to back up but the drop-off was too great and he couldn't get back up on the road. A first simple fix would be to make the drop-off more of a slant.

      Rail companies famously never spend more than they absolutely have to on their tracks. My partner's brother works for the MN DNR. The rail companies that run through MN never bother to clear any of the brush near the tracks. It's cheaper for them to just pay the fine when their trains inevitably start a wildfire. It's the same sort of logic even on this track. The only way they'll pay to put an incline in is if someone gets hit and they get sued - and even then the person suing them would have to demonstrate liability and that the rail company (is it CSX that owns this track?) knew it's a problem and a safety hazard and didn't do anything about it.

Is the dumbing down of America finally complete? If so, the railroads might need to provide a concrete ramp of sorts so cars can at least easily backup back onto the street. Unless it's a 4x4, it seems impossible for a regular car to get free from most tracks w/o add'l help. Wow! Thank goodness this ended well & hats off to all who cared, the person making the alert call & the person w/the umbrella getting the people out of the car.

      +SGT Ghost
      Haha, let me explain my version of a ramp. When a car goes over a track at the intersection, the track is pretty level to the road and isn't an obstacle, maybe just a small bump. But when a car makes a bad turn, it is between the tracks. If there was a tapered portion of concrete/asphalt going from level ground up to the road, it becomes wedge shaped, thus a ramp. The car could just back up 'the ramp' back onto the road. That was the MacGuyver solution with the wood, providing the height needed to get back on the road.
      This could be fixed in a dream world we don't live in hehe. When our infrastructure is to the point that dams are busting, plus this isn't something that happens very often @ train crossings, we're left with crossing our fingers or a hope or a prayer :)

      @@killman369547 I’m with you on the human stupidity part. Anyone with two brain cells to synapse together would recognize what a disaster this intersection is and fix it so it isn’t so prone to failure. The money wasted on unnecessary and preventable emergency responses to things like this are an outrageous waste.

    This happens weekly. The problem is with the intersection, and not just with the drivers. It's fun to hand out "Darwin Awards" to strangers, but come on, the town and the railroad need to address this.

      I'm not sure that will work. In my home state of California you Caltrain (local train service). If caught it's $500 fine and two points on your license

    Who in their right mind drives from the right lane into a dark abyss? If you're lucky, it's a median. A common street design. It could have been a canal. Going too fast for conditions, not in the left turn lane to begin with, and oblivious to visible pavement markings. In an unfamiliar town.

    If you find yourself in this kind of predicament, stuck on tracks in any situation, immediately look for a small blue sign posted at the grade crossing (at US crossings, it is a blue background with white lettering). They're often on the crossbucks and sometimes on a separate post. There's a toll-free 800 number for the railroad (usually that particular railroad's police dispatch) and the exact location of the crossing (every point on a railroad has specific names to avoid confusion). You still risk being hit, especially if it is a busy line, but you give yourself and any approaching train a fighting chance to avoid a collision.
    This is good example of why we should retest for driver's licenses periodically, regardless of age (then come up with real deterrents to driving suspended/revoked). I drive for a living and drivers nationwide become less and less proficient with every year that passes.

    • @jilljones3664
      @jilljones3664 3 года назад +2

      In the USA, at crossings that have flashing red lights, a lot of times the 800 number and crossing location are painted on the silver box next to the track, that contains the electronics for the flashing lights.

    They should ramp the ballast up to the street level so cars/trucks can back out instead of having to bring out a tow truck. It won't encourage people to turn wrong, but will expedite recovery.

    The roadway through the RR Right of Way should have a centerline marking. I don't see markings at all.
    That's not to excuse the drivers inattention, but some markings would help during adverse weather conditions....like rain.
    A way out of this predicament would help, also....like an asphalt or concrete ramp to back out of that ditch?

    Such things happen. Very rainy nights are stressful in unfamiliar areas. Too many shadows, glare, odd reflections all contribute to disorientation. During a downpour, a driver coming east on my street wound up steering into a parked car. Otherwise, there was enough lighting and leeway on either side under dry nighttime conditions.

    Hello from the UK. This is the second video that I have watched where a car turns left and onto the track in exactly the same spot. Is there something inherently badly designed about the crossing? This was a much more lucky outcome. However, watching them get the car back onto the crossing, you can see that the driver was never going to be able to reverse back onto the road.
