We see this on Toronto streetcar tracks some times, but they eventually fall below grade to an underground station about a mile away. And that’s about where they sometimes find them, the drivers just keep going forward for some reason. And the warning signage is VERY LARGE and over the top, yet it keeps happening.
I still think they need to paint a 1-2m white stripe marking the sides of the road way. That driver was looking at an approaching car's headlights, straight in their eyes, and was probably light-blinded as they drove off the road, onto the track. Why oh why aren't they backing up, though? "I didn't get a Reverse Gear on this car." Maybe that's it. Oh - they FINALLY thought of that - "Gee, is that what Reverse means? Never knew that before!!" du-uh
All they need to do is place Delineator Posts between the tracks on both sides, problem solved. We have this similar setup in Bartlett Illinois but because of the posts, we don;t have the problem the problem.
Ashland, Va. needs to put arrows showing straight ahead & then left turn arrows where the left turn actually is. Maybe this will stop some of the boings.
