This might be a silly question but how do freight locomotives from different companies based on different sides of the country wind up pulling freight together? I always thought UP and BNSF were out west while CSX and NS were here on the east coast.
The locomotives are all the same underneath the paint. So when a train originates on one railroad and terminates on another (for example, a long-distance intermodal train, coal train, grain train...) it is more efficient for the receiving railroad to just keep the locomotives it came with and put their own crew aboard. They will return the foreign locomotives when it's convenient. Railroads keep track of the number of "horsepower hours" their locomotives spend pulling for other railroads and pay each other back either by lending their own locomotives for an equivalent number of hours, or by cash.

Hello from the UK. Perhaps that little dog was running away from animal rights protesters, who were after him for wearing real animal fur. Just a thought :)
It's usually a result of the town existing well before cars were a thing. Railroad goes through area, businesses pop up near railroad to capitalize on easy goods loading and unloading, as well as disembarking passengers, town area forms, then cars become a thing and a "main road" area is paved around the tracks. Street runners are rare these days but there is some logic to their formation. Usually the rails were there first.
I'm not sure cars and trains mix that well. Seems dangerous to me. I would think anyone parking in that town would know by now they have to deal with trains. How scary!!!
The other thing is that when you see an Amtrak or Brightline being "pulled" by a freight loco, that's usually because they're not running on a leased portion of track and therefore the freight RR requires that their equipment and crews perform the move.
