When I first saw that 'The Parting Glass' video I was feeling truly wretched. As I wrote in the comment on that video "I was 4 pounds of anxiety in a 2 pound bag", then I listened to the song and burst into tears. Everything I was feeling came out in those tears, and I felt so much better. I felt the emotional power you were talking about in this song.

    I'm from Ireland.
For me, this is a funeral song, and it's meant in my mind to be the bit at the end of the funeral-mass that says "we're going to do some serious drinking as soon as we get out of this church and graveyard and tell a lot of nice stories about the person who we buried today"
For me, the Liam Clancy version is the main one, or maybe Ronnie Drew, they both did it the right way.
It's pretty much the saddest song I know of, but Irish funerals are tricky. We want to celebrate the good things about the person who we lost. We all want a party in honour of our memory when we die, but at the same time, losing friends and family is horrific and it's not always easy to party when we are that upset and sad.

It was an absolute pleasure to watch everything on your face transpire from 0:56 to 1:40, where you settled into your opinion on what you heard until you took that break to talk about it. The song hit me that fast too, and it's always interesting to see where the chills kick in on different people. A little late to the viewing, but I enjoy the content! It's also been really helpful to learn all of these new things. :)

Just found your reaction to this. I love this song and was so glad I found this version a while back. It is beautiful. If you want some more incredible harmonies, I highly suggest The Wild Reeds. The second song they did in their NPR Tiny Desk concert, Everything Looks Better in Hindsight, is amazing. It starts a little over 5 minutes in. Them doing their song Fruition at Paste Studios is phenomenal. And though the audio isn't quite as good, Let No Grief at Sofar is incredible.

While it IS technically a Scots folk song, much like Hurt now belongs to Johnny Cash, I think we Scots need to cede this one to the Irish. It's not that many awesome Scots versions don't exist, George Donaldson does an excellent version for example, but all the best versions tend to be the more Irish influenced ones. That said, Natalie Holmes is (I believe) English & I actually adore that clear English folk voice on this track, it really works to give this kind of ethereal effect.

I subscribed. :-) I've also been listening to Longest Johns videos since about 2017 (?) I think... It's part of their style to have such tight harmonies on the chorus that their voices blend into one, though each also has a cache of songs where one takes the lead on the verse. One of their more haunting songs is their rendition of Robert Lewis Stevenson's "Christmas at Sea," for which they composed a new melody. A video of which is here: ruclips.net/video/VDjbUJxVw84/видео.html -- there, two swap solo verses, and the other two fill out the harmonies. (I'm not sure how to describe who's who -- I can't exactly say: "The guy with the beard," or "the one sitting in his kitchen. :-)

If you like this style of music, you should absolutely take a listen to Colm McGuinness. He's done a cover of _The Parting Glass_ just a week back where he does vocals and instruments. And while _Óró 'Sé do Bheatha 'Bhaile_ is fun, and _The Rains of Castamere_ is great for some serious bass singing and some haunting harmonizing, I think _I See Fire_ is a better showcase of the range of his talent.

I kinda feel the same way about this rendition, as I do with all other great versions of The Parting Glass that I've stumbled on. It sounds absolutely great, and it might even evoke real emotion(as this particular rendition certainly does), but it doesn't manage the emotional impact of the version from AC: Black Flag.
That said, great video as usual. :)

I find this version of the parting glass a bit static and lacking, tbh. Im having this song sang at my funeral, and if this is how my friends did it, I'd be turning in my coffin.
