I believe their is a landfill up river. They do have barriers there, but during heavy rainfall, they are not enough to prevent trash from washing into the river. This barrier was installed to mitigate that.
This makes be so incredibly happy but also absolutely sad. The work this company is doing is nothing short of amazing but holy crap, look at all that garbage and plastic. And this is just one river worth.
It is mind blowing the amount of plastic in that video. I sure appreciate all your.I've done and trying to clean up the ocean. I look forward to the progress of this latest placement. Hope to see new videos on it.
This has really made a visible difference. I have lived in Belize on the Gulf of Honduras for over 20 years. When I first came there was plastic garbage washing up onto the beach every day. It was very obvious that the majority of the plastic was from Hispanic countries, and products that are not sold in Belize. This year I remarked that there was visibly much less plastic washing up onto the beach than there had been years before.
Amazing!!! Is the Guatemala Government in paralel working on solutions for waste logistics so that the river communities stop dumping their trash into the river?
@@LatinJck It comes as no great surprise. They don't have the technology, the infrastructure, or even the know-how to stop the pollution where it starts.

Great to see a second barrier being installed, this river certainly needs it. I guess the no1 priority is reducing the plastic entering the river system in the first place. The government needs to work on making it easier for residents to dispose of their rubbish. Will people be more encouraged to throw their rubbish in the river because they know it will get collected now? Of course stopping it entering the ocean is a great thing. Great work guys

The problem is that if the infrastructure for collecting and disposing or recycling of trash is not in place then the problem will perpetuate. Governments need lobbying to sort their act out regarding waste collection and disposal.
For real, like the amount of plastic I see in these videos since the barrier has been up is.. not decreasing AT ALL. The local government really oughtta pick up the slack
The real problem is the import of plastic in the first place. A tropical region like that needs to start transitioning to pressed banana leaves, bamboo, and other sustainable/biodegradable materials. They also need to process the existing plastic on site and make building materials
They should realize there is money to be made in trash. Thanks for your work. You mentioned the garbage dump at the beginning of the river in an earlier video and that a lot of trash comes from there when it is flooded. Does the state of Guatemala do anything to close this dump or fix the problem? Because it sounded like that's the source for quite a lot of trash in the river. Seems unlogical that they bring the trash there in trucks and dump it onto the river and you then have to get it out and put it in trucks again. But again: thanks for your hard work. You are doing a great job and achieve maximum impact with minimum recources.
I am amazed at the work that has gone into these barriers and it’s very clearly achieving its objectives. However, is there action/education being taken to stop the amount of waste in the rivers in the first place? Breaks my heart to see places left like this
the engineering and iterative design is very impressive, it looks like the company had really embraced engineering values & has attracted amazing talent. To the engineers congratulations the solutions you are delivering are very clean.
In these third world countries, there are no garbage cans, and there’s no agency that comes by to empty them. It either accumulates in town, or locals toss it in the river. I’m not saying it right but that’s their reality. Far different than the luxuries you and I have.
Is anyone else blown away by the amount of trash these barriers are stopping? If this doesn’t motivate us to reduce plastic use, I don’t know what will!
Acts of god sometimes blow trash away from those who intend to put it in the right place, it takes faith to put in the work to make sure it’s collected as stewards of the environment and reaffirm belief in gods plan.

is anything being done to change what is causing that much plastic to be in the river int he first place? it's great you're catching it but if you're not going to reduce it just seems like a band-aid on a bigger problem.
We are here to significantly reduce the amount of trash entering the Caribbean Sea from the Motagua River. We see this Interceptor deployment as the fastest way to achieve this goal. Upstream changes are part of the solution too, but these changes require time. We hope that one day our Interceptor Barricade will no longer be needed, and we know that the authorities are working to prevent the trash from flowing into the river. But we also know that these periodic tsunamis of trash continue to cause great harm to the oceans. We want to ensure that the Barricade prevents this river debris from becoming ocean pollution to give us the time needed to address the waste management issues behind the problem.

How is the collected garbage processed and who’s paying for that? Isn’t the root problem that garbage collection/processing isn’t funded, so people dump it in the river?
Improper disposal of local garbage is only the minor part of the root problem. The major part is global garbage trade. The USA and EU among others ship their garbage to Guatemala, India and other countries. This is even considered recycling in the countries of origin. Guatemala can’t handle the wast amount of westerners garbage though.
