also note that this is specifically on americans, the preferance for chocolate tastes differentiates across cultures. Europeans tend to not like Hershey's chocolate as much as something more familiar like cote d'or in Belgium.
Same as British and Australians preferring Cadbury, which is itself a British chocolate brand.

As an American, Hershey’s is actually terrible. It tastes like fake chocolate. It’s wild.
Americans don't even like hersheys when they compare it against british cadbury. And even as a brit, I dont think it matches the likes of Belgian/Swiss chocolate. But in the price range, british cadbury's is miles above anything on offer in America
Fun fact: I'm from Germany and before MrBeast launched Featables and talked about being better then Hersheys, I never knew Hersheys existed.

My best friend back in HS was from Gernany. He'd bring back authentic German chocolate whenever he visited home. It was hands down better than anything you can buy in the USA. Better than any English chocolate my wife's family has sent us too.

Yeah, I think that outside of America Hersheys isn't really a thing.
When I saw Mr Beast blind test and saw that a dark chocolate was a contestant I said " well, that's just not right". And then I saw that the dark chocolate was second I thought to myself that that was going to ruin the tastebuds of the participants, that bitter taste isn't going away for a long time.
Well, it's good to see that team theorist also thought the same and even bought more points to it.
That was my first thought - tasting four different chocolates in rapid succession would certainly make them blur together without palate cleansing between.

Putting the Lindt 75% right after the sweet-as-heck feastsble feels really deliberate. After the sweet first chocolate, all you’ll be able to taste is the bitter.

I was quite skeptical of the "taste test" to begin with. Firstly, the pairing was weird as pointed out in the video, you gotra compare apples to apples, not milk chocolate to dark. Secondly, it was highly suspicious the "testers" kept saying the chocolate was "way better than Hershey's", pretty much the main tagine of feastables and they were supposed to be going in blind, suggesting they knew which one had to win and were just a formality, which was just the cherry on top when it comes to the invalidity of his so called experiment. Another important thing is that, not everyone has the same preference in chocolate. There's a reason Hershey's is popular in America but disgusted in Europe, we are just acclimated to different tastes and have different preferences. European chocolates are rich and dense, and while I've never had Hershey's I've heard they're completely different. There's no point giving an American test group 3 European chocolates and 1 American chocolate, and then acting surprised they prefer the chocolate designed to their own market and expectations of what chocolate is. It is honestly disappointing to see MrBeast make such a wildly incorrect claim, showing that he really is out of his depth and has no idea what he's doing in this regard.

It's fairly obvious what occurred. Mr Beast is trying to sell chocolate, and his video is marketing for the brand.
It is obviously going to show his brand in the best possible light, and that is what it did.

I never watched this channel but I really like the research and format already. Santi is doing an incredible job, maintaining the voice and quality intonation. Perfection.
I don't watch Food Theory often. But every one I have seen has been highly informative and thought out like this!
They clearly try to make the content seem as official as possible, but it is honestly kind of bad. While Food Theory's critique of MrBeast's taste test raises valid points about the importance of scientific rigor, their own analysis and counter-experiment suffer from similar shortcomings. This ironic and potentially hypocritical approach weakens their argument and underscores the need for more consistent application of scientific principles in food-related investigations, regardless of who is conducting them.
Can you guess which sentences were AI generated/summarized above? Probably pretty easy, but it's true. Their own test had a low sample size of 4 that obviously was biased, and their left-right bias demonstration at 5:35 was clearly flawed as A appeared before B, forcing A to be first noticeable. Not only this but the majority of the video felt like a high school essay I might have made that has technically correct terms but in reality has just been loosely thrown together into a plausible story. Only a single source was shown, and no specific statistics were brought up from sources. Not only this but many of the things they said "studies found" they did not reference whatsoever. So much for their "...here at Food Theory we need the numbers, we live off of cold hard facts" (5:02). I agree the test done by the Mr. Beast channel was obviously improper, but this is pretty obvious and doesn't take a food theorist to figure out. Especially a food theorist that is only one step above a Bright Side video.

Their example at 5:35 is a misrepresentation as the left appears first, forcing you to notice before the right. They also only cite one paper while listing general statistics (no specific numbers) and not citing the majority of these statistics.

There's also a fatal flaw in the taste test - they did it with AMERICAN chocolate. Whilst you might assume all chocolate tastes the same worldwide, there can actually be dramatic differences depending on where the cows came from.
My dad used to work for Cadburys. His favourite story to tell was when he went on a business trip and met colleagues from across the world, and they all brought their own Dairy Milk bars to taste test against each other. He said the difference was staggering. For instance, chocolate from Australia took longer to melt in the mouth, because they had to put additional stuff in the chocolate so it wouldn't melt in the heat. He said by far the best Dairy Milk was the Irish; it had a rich creamy texture unlike any of the others (I remember English Dairy Milk came in third - I think the swiss DM beat it).
And American Dairy Milk came in dead last, because there are fewer restrictions on the amount of preservatives and, more importantly, a lower level of actual chocolate solids required in a bar in order to still call it chocolate.
Yes, this was pre-covid. But I highly doubt much has changed since then. So Mr Beast has literally the rest of the world against him if he wants to really call his chocolate "best made by mankind" :P
I have eaten American Cadbury chocolate and Australian Cadbury chocolate and I definitely 100% prefer Aussie Cadbury. I would loooove to try Irish Cadbury.
Anytime I would visit family in Canada, I would always get Canadian Cadbury which was vastly superior to any American chocolate.

Well that because other countries knows how to raise cows and breed cows. Where my grandparents from. They feed them hay of whatever and maybe grass and cow feed. Most can’t find the effort to do more because it doesn’t pay the bills. Only a few farmers can make that sell.
One thing to note, when most of us in the US, think milk chocolate, we think Hersey's. Not only that anyone whose gone camping has used Hersey's to make s'mores. Hersey's Milk Chocolate is our childhood. I think part of the reason why Mr. Beats team removed Hersey's from the taste test is because of the positive childhood memories many associate Hersey's with may overcome any natural taste differences. It would be interesting to see an episode that explores if there is a link between childhood foods and comport foods as adults.

yeah in a perfect world to get the perfect results you will need a much much larger testing pool with diverse nationalities and preferences before you could start to rule out personal biases like
familiar taste biase and emotional links like you mentioned
Sure people ate Hersey's growing up, but idk if most people have eaten so much of it that they subconsciously love it so much that it couldn't lose to other options. I think it's more likely that Hersey's really focuses on making their chocolate thick, creamy, and sweet which many people really seem to enjoy even if it doesn't have the best chocolate flavor compared to fancier chocolate products.

Yeah, if any of the participants liked dark over milk they would 100% choose the dark, especially since it’s Lindt and they make fantastic dark chocolate! So rich and fruity yet not bitter!

I disliked his first video big time, he messed up his own testing so badly and did a poor job explaining reasoning during the video. But he quickly picked up the pace and I feel is delivering content on par at least!

To give them a little of the benefit of the doubt, I would guess they always had the chocolates in the same order so they could just slap the images on the video in editing without having to refer back to notes. Occam's razor and "not assuming malice when stupidity is sufficient" and all that. I'm not familiar with Mr. Beast but they don't strike me as a science channel

I grew up eating swiss chocolate. The first time I tasted Hershey’s, I thought it was expired chocolate. I found out years later that they use fermented milk for that distinction flavor which explains it, and gives it a very recognizable flavor as opposed to other milk chocolates

There can be issues with that though. Because of all of the different biases talked about in the video it would make the test less consistent since each person would experience it differently. I'm not an expert though so I don't know if randomizing is better or not.
I did a taste test for Red Robin once, and they presented each burger individually. I couldn’t focus on the comparison between them as easily because there was time in between each sample, meaning anchoring bias was possible but unlikely, and the left to right bias was impossible.
@@flameofmage1099 yea I don’t disagree with that, I still think there should be time in between each taste as well as having them in a random order. Additionally a larger sample size is needed to help avoid biases.
Overall I don’t think there would ever be a perfect test, but the improved version showcased in this video is definitely more along the lines of what I would call a good test
I find the Lindt chocolate quite funny, because ~70% is my favourite range of cocoa amount. I'd almost certainly pick it over the other options

I love that Santi had the team run his improved experimental design with fewer biases but would love to see how people who are used to different levels of sweetness fare. My parents are Korean and find American candy of all kinds overwhelmingly sweet because they didn’t grow up with the same kinds of desserts.

Yeah, the main weakness of their improved experiment is the sample of testers, very small, could use a lot more people from different experiences to help obtain more reliable data

5:40 I can confirm the left-to-right thing. After I started learning Hebrew writing, I now find my left-to-right instinct losing priority sometimes with things that aren't explicitly Latin characters. Sometimes I'll glance too quickly at a lineup of objects and have to let my brain 'buffer' in order to 'read' it in the intended direction it's like trying to switch your brain from Imperial to Metric measurements in a way
As someone equally fluent in Hebrew and English, exactly this! At this point, when it's not something written, I literally don't have a left-to-right bias. I'd probably be starting from the middle, as a matter of fact.
Can also confirm as someone who also reads Hebrew as a second language. I also started reading Japanese manga recently, which is read right to left, and I noticed that my mind actually tends to pay attention to the middle of a sentence first rather than the start.

I showed my mom a page and she thought I was insane for being able read it 😂 It’s also quite difficult for me to readjust to LTR Marvel comics after I read a bunch of manga

Very good video, I love your approach and as a student of psychology I can say that the effects you mentioned were correct and an important factor in mr beasts test. The way your explained them was perfect, it was super easy to understand :D
But it is noteworthy that due to the small sample size, your own test in the end barely has any meaning, so this video is not to understand as proof that feastables is worse than other choclate.

I love that Santi explains and shows how the results were skewed with psychology. That way you know what to look for in OTHER situations where a "blind test" is conducted and how to better perform a test on your own to avoid bias. 10/10 brilliant job

A potential reason for Hershey’s being excluded is that they have branding on the actual chocolate. Obviously doesn’t excuse the other scientific failures, but still something. Awesome work as host, Santi. I’m hopeful for the future of this channel!

Random is almost always the best sampling method. Random people, Random qualifiers, Random exposure and then just add time and resampling (retesting) subjective results will approach truth.
I love videos about more "simple" biases because it just highlights to me how good of a job I do at removing biases from my thought processes and therefore my life.
Including one dark chocolate in the test was the most obvious red flag to me

Fun fact: when doing a blind test, you assign items in a random order to prevent bias :)
Besides the order being randomized and more options (Hershey's) being added, another thing that you did correct in your taste test vs Mr Beast's is the crackers and water. These or some other palette cleanser should always be used before the first and between each flavor. This lets each flavor be judged on a more similar "playing field".

This is really funny. Just a month or two ago I tried both the old and new versions/formulas of the Mr Beast Bars because I was curious. The old version just tasted like a slightly off Hershey's, and the new one tasted just like Lindt. They were good, but I still liked the other brands (mainly Hershey's) much better. Seeing this video and finding out about Mr Beast's taste test through this is absolutely hilarious.

3:02 so about that test; my mom actually participated in it, and preferred coke(still does), and figured out that they gave something extra if you chose pepsi, and so my mom, despite liking coke more, would tell them she liked pepsi just to get the extra bonus. And I can almost guarantee that my mom wasn't the only one to do that so I wouldn't trust it.
Obviously they don't tell you which one is which, and they don't tell you which one you chose, but my mom was able to tell the difference, and noticed she got extra stuff if she chose pepsi

I can confirm at least in Western Newfoundland Canada, MrBeast Feastable bars are not popular, i work in a grocery store, and they are by far the least purchased bar here

Two important notes about the tests is that dark chcoclate would abosolutly leave an after taste that doesnt go away easily. And hershys would bring a sort of familiarity bias that would be much stronger than the other biases.

I think another improvement would be to add a fifth chocolate that is subjective to each participant. Having it be their favorite personal choice. However I could see how that might create bias on its own, but it would allow more subjective taste.
Also I'm not surprised at all with Mr Beast's cheating. Entirely intended. And I bet a huge factor would be video cutting out the non-Mr Beast choices. Possibly even having more than 100 tasters and just picking ones that fit their goal.
However, I find myself wanting to try their chocolate just to see how decent it may be. I would never expect it to be the best, only that it's value warrants the cost.
I like Hershey’s for the nostalgia and it’s a classic for s’mores (plus Kisses for Peanut Butter Blossom cookies).
For richer chocolate, I tend to go with Lindt and Ghiradhelli. For keto chocolate, I like Choczero. I also occasionally have some other brands of chocolate (such as Endangered Species, or Lake Champlain).
I will say I prefer Hershey’s to Palmer.
