I can't say who was best, because some days I need to hear some Levi music, then I need to hear some David Ruffin. But I will say this, Levi's voice and singing was virtually flawless. His singing was exquisite!!!
Levi Stubb had one of the most beautiful and soulful voice on this planet . He could sing the alphabets and it would sound great. He could have left the and go solo but he didn't. He choose to be with his brothers of music and his life long friend. What a humble man who was a king in his own right. You should read about the four tops autobiography, there was never no replacements in the group, there never was competition and jealousy, no inner fighting, Hollywood and other music companies made several attempts to steel Levi from the group and each time he told them no, I'm a singer for the 4 tops, he did voice makeovers on movie's and that was it, I stand corrected, replacements were only made after each member died, and they were very upset when Berry Gordy picked up and moved Motown to California, they all remained in Detroit.
Such a talented man, will always cherish the beautiful, soulful music he made. I'm sure it was very hard for Duke to lose all his brothers, they were truly wonderful. 😞
I just stumbled across this just now and so appropriate for this young man sing this song.. I remember 1964 we would always visit my Aunt Lils in Hot Springs, Arkansas and in her back room a small den.. And she placed a record player in there where the young teenagers would gather. I first heard all the Supreme songs but will the Four Tops were being played it caught my ear. That husky voice and the background singers with perfect harmony, I thought I can identify with this.. And I listened intently and at this age is when I identified with being black and proud.. I looked at the record spinning around Hitsville? Where is that? Found that it was Motown? So I studied them and found out that I could sing along.. But it started for Mr Levi Stubbs, then David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, and then Marvin Gaye. Long as this music was created you never get tired of hearing them one more time… thanks black music industry for keeping through all these turbulent times.. LB September 2021
