I get a very defined twistout from "dry hair". I spray a little aloe vera juice, add Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque, detangle, and twist. Actually, I FLAT twist because I like for my hair to lay down more. Thanks for sharing your tips!
Tip-- ALWAYS do a twist out with some sort of holding product i.e. gel, pudding, etc. It really helps for the twists to set and lock together, so you don't have to be re-twisting all the time! LOL Mistake-- Twisting in big sections. Oh boy! My hair is medium density, but it still is quite fluffy and thick after I finish washing it. So, that is probably why I normally fail at twist outs and I wear wash and go's more often. Please, never twist in biiiiiig sections if your hair is thick and you don't want your twists to be unraveling the whole time!
I find that doing twist outs on damp almost dry hair, not freshly washed hair, really helps with definition, moisture retention and curl esp on 4b, 4c hair. A creamy leave in and a thick butter works for moisture and definition and a dab of gel on the ends if ur ends won't coil. Hope this helps someone.
I know this video is old but can I just tell you. I followed India's technique to the tee when doing a twist out of course using products that I already have on hand. After 2 1/2 years of being natural by following her technique I achieved my best twist out ever this week. I couldn't be more happier and from here on out this will be my go to style. Thank you India for sharing.
I will never get enough of two strand twist out videos because I love videos that show styles related to hair and healthy hair practices. Thank you for sharing.
I did my twist out exactly as you said. The results were perfect! I've received numerous compliments! Thank you so much for your tutorial, it is by far one of the best I've seen on the Internet. You are a beautiful black woman. Has anyone ever told you that you bear a striking resemblance to Yolanda King (Dr. Martin L. King's oldest daughter)?
Always loved your videos India because it is so good to see a girl on youtube who looks like me! The other day people were making fun of my natural hair I don't know what I should do.
Some people aren't yet "comfortable" with natural hair. I know I used to think that my hair wasn't professional or sleek unless I straightened it. Nothing could be further from the truth. Your hair is beautiful, you are beautiful! God made you this way. Don't be too worried by what others think or say, just let go and be a curly girl! (and watch other tutorials, if its not twist outs, there are a TON more styles out there for you!!). :):)
Loved this! My hair is naturally very kinky with tight coils, but I really wanted to learn how to achieve that look throughout my entire head and more neatly. Thank you for speaking so clearly and explaining so well! xx
Thank goodness for tip #13 and #14. There was a lot of confusion on that part for me, especially when it comes to breaking apart the curls to create more volume. I'm glad to hear you say to just leave it alone if it doesn't want to *naturally* separate. You completely saved me on wasted time and frizzy hair, thank you!
Thank you for this. I wore my hair in dreds for over 10 years and I just took them out a couple of months ago so I am new on this journey of natural hair. There is so much information out there on different products and it can be overwhelming. My twist outs have turned out frizzy most times than not so your video is very helpful. I will definitely keep following you!!!!
OMG. I hadnt even thought to use the Cantu Shea Butter Twist and Lock Gel before. it makes every style I try come out exactly the way I want! THANK YOU.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!! I needed to be reminded to take my time untwisting. I'm guilty of forcing them to separate resulting in lots of frizz. I did this last night and took my time this morning and am rocking a fabulously defined twist out today! Thanks!
Thank you so much for these tips! One thing I was doing wrong was forcing my twists to separate instead of moving on to the next twist, and yes it causes a lot of unnecessary frizz. When you know better, you do better :-)
this was one of the best tutorials I have seen. I am going to try some of these tips on my next twist out. I am usually rushing to take my twists out. This lets me know to take my time.
I live by separating and smoothing the hair while twisting it. It makes it so much smoother and the hair is easier to split and fluff during take down! I might try the lock and twist gel too!
This video came right on time! I am doing my big chop tomorrow after nearly 13 months of transitioning, and I want to do a twist out as my first style. These tips were very helpful.
The techniques of smoothing the twists while twisting and coiling the ends with extra product have always allowed for my twist-outs to come out lovely. :) Great tips!
This is more a comment than a tip- If you have multiple textures of hair on your head, some sections won't hold a twist or a twistout worth a darn. You can leave the twists intact in those areas (if they are small) or use a pipecleaner to make a tiny coil or do a braidout (in those sections only) to camouflage the differences and avoid having one or more fuzzy areas. Thanks for posting, your twistout looked marvelous! P.S. Can you put a list of products used in the description box for quick reference?
This is excellent advice. I am going to try this next time. I had one section that just kept getting frizzy and I'm not sure if it was the big twist or the section just doesn't hold twists well.
When doing my twist outs, the left side of my head never looked like the right side. So after some trial and error, I've learned that both sides should be twisted toward my face to receive my desired look. Before this revelation, one side would look like a well defined twist it out, and the other like a finger coil (which ended up as a frohawk or a puff). Keep on posting your ever so classy tutorials, I love them!
This video is great, India! I've mastered few different techniques also, but was really looking forward to seeing your process and having a bit more insight. One thing that I had added to my take-down process that may help some other ladies reading comments is oil-soaking the ends of twists. Since my hair is even more thick, dense and frizzy than some, it allows me to pull twists apart without having to run my hand down the entire twist as long as I've carefully coiled the ends as you've done. Love it! Thank you again for being an inspiration! :):)
Great video! Once I do my twists, I put them in bantu knots to give a nice curl to the hair so that it is not straight when I take them down. It gives it a nice look too!
Tried this out! I should of dampened my hair for more definition but it looks gorgeous! I used to make really big twists and it would never come out well, sectioning in small sections was key! So soft and fluffy ^-^
***** aaaw, you shouldn't the curls look very natural and similar to a lot of natural hair patterns. Plus when ppl see confidence in you then they respect it more, ppl like to pick on insecurities
I am faithfully on RUclips for ideas for my natural hair. This video is the first video that I have seen that goes into detail on how to do twist outs and how to properly undo them to get the defined curls. I have tried the techniques from other videos and could never get the defined curls, but I am hopeful that this video will help. Will do my twists tonite.
I watch of you alls videos because I am transitioning from locs and a big chop to growing my hair out and I cannot WAIT until my hair grows to try all of these styles
I am sooo glad you made this video. my " aha ha" moment" was when you said to separate your hair only where the hair naturally starts to separate. The was Great info for me. now my twist out are no frizzy. THANK YOU
This video was very helpful! I had my aha moment during the separating part. I usually force the separation to make it fuller in which result in too much frizz. I never thought to allow my hair to separate where it wants to and then use a pick to fluff the roots. I will give this a try and see what happens. Thank you so much!!
Bless u sister i just had my aha! Moment last sunday. I found this vid while roaming on youtube looking for tips. I ve been in the natural game for 4 yrs & my twist outs always look incomplete and wrong and just not nice so i were them in buns. But this vid has been helpful. I ve a day 4 hair which has never happened. Also ur vid on u cutting ur heat damaged hair encouraged me to cut mine which i ve been avoiding for yrs. Thank u
Beautiful, I have done twist outs, 3 strand twists and braid outs still trying to figure out which one suits my hair the best since my hair is that middle of the road stage...this was a great video thanks for sharing!
Woow i learn so much. My twistout always come out frizzzy. Thank you,God bless you . Always amazing to visit your channel. You guys helped me more then you'll ever know its been a year know thay my hair has been growing back after a lot of breakage and dryness cause by stress but know it healthy and strong and your tips and confidence really help me too
I'm watching this and I am just admiring her hair, especially the white hairs. At 19, I have a ton of them across my head as well so it makes such a nice contrast when I do natural hair styles (although idle hands tend to stray towards my hair in an attempt to pluck them out without asking -_-). Such beautiful sisters with equally gorgeous hair. I really do enjoy watching this channel.
I love this. Thank You for making this video. I'm 8 months into being a natural and I love twist outs but could never get it right. Mostly dealing with my ends and separation. Appreciate it !
After watching this and the classic look video, I decided to finally try a twist out. My ah-ha! moment was using the flexi rods to achieve the look I would want. And my biggest lesson from watching these is DON'T TAKE SHORTCUTS. Girls, you should see how cute my hair came out today!!!! Let's pray to the hair gods that my hair will look this good tomorrow LOL. Please post a video on how to keep this style after working out. I'm so glad you posted this! Even though there are tons of twist-out videos, there are very few who get it right.
This was awesome. I wasn't making mine this small because my hair is so thick but now I will because I love the defines curls. Also I can't wait to watch the video on the products you use because I think the type of product is a huge help.
Excellent. I have not been using holding product, always did the separation in the middle, causing knots, and I do not separate my hair. I need to try these tips! Thank you!
Your twist-out came out so beautiful. I don't do 2 strand twist-outs like this because they never come out the way I want them too. But what I do are flat twist-out which for me work a lot better.
Thank you for sharing! The twist out is my signature style for the past 6 months. I use a combination of oils with raw shea butter. I use Murray loc lock gel to twist.
Great vid. My twist-outs and braid outs are beginning to look like this now (ie minimum frizz and hella shiny). What I have found is that smoothing my hair throughout the whole process of maintaining my hair almost trains the cuticle to lay down and therefore gives me shiny, defined and almost frizz free hair.
Thanks so much your tips were truly helpful. I`ve only been natural for about almost 2 yrs. I`m learning to allow my hair to dry a little before twisting it. Your hair looks gorgeous.
Very helpful. Been natural for 16 months and have trouble with my twist outs. I need to make my sections smaller and wait til my hair is damp and not soaking wet.
Pretty much the only style I wear are twist outs so I have somewhat perfected it :-) Making sure the section is thoroughly detangled, including the root AND using a gel on top of my moisturizer is what has really helped me. Great vid India!
eco styler on top of paul mitchell the conditioner as a leave in and jamaican black caster oil as a sealant gives me incredible twist outs. It looks while while its wet but dries into this incredible cast and once its scrunched, it soooooooooooo soft and touchable!!! Its super defined and lasts all week without remoisturizing!! Its my go to style and it gets bigger as the week progresses
Thank you so much, as my hair gets longer and thicker. I didn't realize I would need to do smaller sections, but when I did I achieved the look I was going for!!! Your tutorial was very helpful, and your hair is always gorgeous😍
I definitely am one of those who never mastered a defined twist out on my own. Thanks for the video. I'll incorporate these tips into my regimen the next time I try a twist out again.
I think my problem is I get to caught up on separating the twists that they lose their curl 😔 but my hair isn't really that thick so my twist out looks like it needs that separation. I'll try picking my roots instead.
So, I have been practicing my twist outs lately. I always do two strand twists but never a twist out. If I do a bigger twist definitely see more frizz than if I do a smaller twist. So trial and error for me until I get that perfect twist out. Great video!!
Agreed with all of these! I feel like one of the most important was number one! I learned early on that damp hair was the key to great twist outs! Loved it! Thumbs up and subscribing!
Great tips India. I'm guilty of rushing when taking down my twist outs so they don't end up as defined. The take down is very important for me lol. ..I'm going to keep these steps I mind for my next twist out :)
I have found that the twisting direction changes definition. For example, for me lazy day twist go counter clockwise. More defined twists go clockwise. It really helps!
I do appreciate your time in showing us how u get those defined curls! My mistake is I force the strands apart..a big no no! Also, u spend a lot of time making sure that u have small pieces of hair to twist. Thanks for big eye opener! Keep up the good work!
I honestly dont know what i do different but my twists r a disaster always!! so I stayed with the braiding method. Plus I have so much hair that the 2-3 times I did twists took me more than 5-6h. Now it would be so awesome to have results like yours!! Beautiful hair beautiful you, God bless u too!!!
Thank you so much! My hair is this length and I've been experimenting with my twist out! This just helped me to define it more. I wasn't using a detangler so I'm going to see how that works. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Love your hair! And Its like we all know the tips but seeing the tips on an successful twist out is reassuring and makes me think, "I know that; why don't I didn't I do that last time?!" Great video!
Oh, thank you soooo much!!!! You are right about there being too many twist out tutorials, but I always, always find myself wondering after trying each technique, "why doesn't mine look like that? why is my hair so frizzy?" This video was great. I can't wait to try these tips!
Oh my gosh! Soooo helpful! Mines always come out so fizzy and sticking everywhere. I'm going to start using a locking gel of some sort to keep my twist outs together. =) Thanks for the video.
Beautiful hair. I've learned with my hair, that some hair types are harder to set. My hair (super coarse 4c) will not curl with braids or twists, unless I use a hair dryer to set the curl pattern. On very coarse hair the twist out work better when they are curled with perm rods.
by 1:09 of the video i was sold! you said everything i was searching for! I'm newly transitioning (heat damaged) natural and I'm ok with my wash and go but my twist out suffers so I came on youtube looking for a twist out! thanks for sharing =]
On my second big chop and trying to get my twistout right. What I'm doing wrong is starting on soaked hair. Also my sections were too big. Many thanks for posting your techniques! You rock!!! :-)
Thanks so much im almost all natural and ive been trying to get a more defined twist out and it always looks a mess...these tips are just what I needed and I see where I was going wrong...thank u thank u thank u!!!
My twist out always looks like this. I've been using olive oil Eco Styler gel and Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie on damp hair (never dry). I use a Denman brush before each twist, and keep a spray bottle handy in case any hair has started to dry. Making smaller twists allow me to keep my style in for 2-3 wks! I have fine, soft 4b hair, and I've used the Jane Carter Curl Defining Cream in the past and it works great also.
Nice! I used the same twist and loc gel on my 4c hair and it worked great, when I untwisted my hair it was really soft and defined as well. Great video ^_^
This is the way I love to do my hair too! I normally do this technique during the summer months. Since I love the control of the style I just might have to do this for the cold months to.
I had not considered sectioning to take them out--that has always been my downfall. I just had a recent success by winding the twists into Zulu knots, which helps tremendously with sectioning. Also, I will try the smoothing separation trick. Thanks for the video!
Straighted my hair a couple days ago, smh I can't wait to try this method! I've also been separating my coils at the roots.. No bueno AND my sections are bigger. So trying this tomorrow! Thhhaaank you!
Girl you know you are just toooooo beautiful. I love your tips and especially appreciate the part about letting the hair do what it naturally wants to do when you separate it for a bigger look. I'm in the process of repairing my hair from picking my locs out and from heat damage. Any further tips for my situation?
I get a very defined twistout from "dry hair". I spray a little aloe vera juice, add Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque, detangle, and twist. Actually, I FLAT twist because I like for my hair to lay down more. Thanks for sharing your tips!
Tip-- ALWAYS do a twist out with some sort of holding product i.e. gel, pudding, etc. It really helps for the twists to set and lock together, so you don't have to be re-twisting all the time! LOL

So, that is probably why I normally fail at twist outs and I wear wash and go's more often. Please, never twist in biiiiiig sections if your hair is thick and you don't want your twists to be unraveling the whole time!
This is soo true. The bigger the twists, the quicker they unravel before I move on to the next section. Smaller twists really work for me.
D Rey Yeah, I'm a type 3 so my twists are forever unraveling. #NaturalHairProbs #curlygirl
Oh gosh thank you so much I use to do mines so big
islandG4L yeah.....I need a good holding product
Late to the video but great tip!!! My thing is trying to figure out how to moisturize my hair so that’s it’s not dry but has a firm hold.
THANK YOU 😘😘
Thank you!
Dawn Cheadle I find the same that my twist outs work better the less damp my 4c hair is.
Thank you! It helped me - I always used to do it on wet hair.
A leave-in with milk in it helps.

Diana Yohannes Thank you this one woman said she'd hot comb my hair in my sleep it made me feel so bad.
Thanks so much I gained more confidence in weeks!
THANK YOU !! my hair has been getting better and better with twist outs and has been growing
Adding products to the ends as an extra measure is a BIG plus! Thanks!
First of all, I love love love your hair!!!! Second, you help me define the true way of twisting without fuzzing!!!! Thirdly,Thank you so much!!!!
Loved this! My hair is naturally very kinky with tight coils, but I really wanted to learn how to achieve that look throughout my entire head and more neatly. Thank you for speaking so clearly and explaining so well! xx
The detangling brush is a beast! Thanks for the product knowledge!!!
Thank goodness for tip #13 and #14. There was a lot of confusion on that part for me, especially when it comes to breaking apart the curls to create more volume. yes there are many videos on twist outs but I am so glad you decided to share your method with us, your video offered a lot of good tips, thank you.
Natural Sistas & Brothas, because i used this tutorial and managed to get it to look like similar to this. i love it!!! plz keep at it!
Thank you so much for these tips! One thing I was doing wrong was forcing my twists to separate instead of moving on to the next twist, and yes it causes a lot of unnecessary frizz. When you know better, you do better :-)

I agree. I use perm rods or the tiny Flexi rods on certain parts of my looser textured hair. I actually wish these sections were kinkier!
Thanks, this is the problem I have in the front of my head. I will get some pipe cleaners tomorrow.
This is excellent advice. I am going to try this next time. I had one section that just kept getting frizzy and I'm not sure if it was the big twist or the section just doesn't hold twists well.
This is my issue. Super coils in back; hardly any curly in the front.
Thank yooooou, this video was very helpful, four years natural and I still can't get it right.
When doing my twist outs, the left side of my head never looked like the right side. Letting the twists separate on its on was a great tip!! Trying it tonight!! My twist outs are always a hit or miss!
This video helped so much ... Not forcing the twist apart just clicked and made sense. I should of known that
. Thanks for this video
I love this. Thank You for making this video. I'm 8 months into being a natural and I love twist outs but could never get it right. Mostly dealing with my ends and separation. Appreciate it !

This was awesome. I wasn't making mine this small because my hair is so thick but now I will because I love the defines curls. Also I can't wait to watch the video on the products you use because I think the type of product is a huge help.
Definitely gonna try a holding product the next time I do a twist out. Also, great tip about the take down method and minimizing frizz.
Excellent. I have not been using holding product, always did the separation in the middle, causing knots, and I do not separate my hair. I need to try these tips! Thank you!
I haven't done a twist out yet but you have just inspired me to do one. You've also inspired me to cut the damage out of my hair. Thank you. ♥♥♥
Your twist-out came out so beautiful. I don't do 2 strand twist-outs like this because they never come out the way I want them too. But what I do are flat twist-out which for me work a lot better.

Thanks so much your tips were truly helpful. I`ve only been natural for about almost 2 yrs. I`m learning to allow my hair to dry a little before twisting it. Your hair looks gorgeous.
This was really helpful, I have been struggling with my twist outs forever and a day. Thank you.
Thank you for this. Just started to wear my hair natural to work and really needed this.
Very helpful. Been natural for 16 months and have trouble with my twist outs. I need to make my sections smaller and wait til my hair is damp and not soaking wet.

Never get burned out on twist out tips. Thanks so much! I'm having issues getting a nice twist out. Looking for some wash n go tips too.
Thank you so much, as my hair gets longer and thicker. I didn't realize I would need to do smaller sections, but when I did I achieved the look I was going for!!! Your tutorial was very helpful, and your hair is always gorgeous😍
Learned so much! Ive had troubles finding what works for my hair! Definitely will try this
I definitely am one of those who never mastered a defined twist out on my own.
Hands down the best twist-out tutorial I've ever seen! Thank you for these great tips ^.^
This is so helpful, I never thought to use twist and lock cream or detangler. Thank you because I was getting frustrated.
I enjoyed the video. You explained well how to get the defined twist out. I love twist outs.
Thanks for the tips...I'm using these steps NOW...looking forward to the results. I have not tried these methods..Thanks again
Loved it! Thumbs up and subscribing!
h
Perfected the twist out and in luv with my hair again thank you for the inspiration
Love the way your twist turned out!!!
Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Thanks, for the video. Never tried pick my hair out to add volume after a twist out. I will try this.
Thank you so much. Tried this today and it turned out fabulous.
by 1:09 of the video i was sold! you said everything i was searching for! I'm newly transitioning (heat damaged) natural and I'm ok with my wash and go but my twist out suffers so I came on youtube looking for a twist out! thanks for sharing =]
I love your videos they have helped me a lot. I haven't been natural very long but the short time I have I been natural learned so much.
On my second big chop and trying to get my twistout right. What I'm doing wrong is starting on soaked hair. Also my sections were too big. Many thanks for posting your techniques!
You rock!!! :-)
i love this. i have only been natural for a week now but excited to one day try this
Thanks so much im almost all natural and ive been trying to get a more defined twist out and it always looks a mess...these tips are just what I needed and I see where I was going wrong...thank u thank u thank u!!!
The take down method I definitely have to try and doing them loose versus cornrowed to my head
Nice! I used the same twist and loc gel on my 4c hair and it worked great, when I untwisted my hair it was really soft and defined as well. Great video ^_^
Thanks for the tip.......I use Shea Moisture Gel and organic coconut oil for moisture.
Love your hair, your energy and your makeup.
Thank u!! This helped. I was taking my twist and pulling apart from the root!
This is the way I love to do my hair too! I normally do this technique during the summer months. Since I love the control of the style I just might have to do this for the cold months to.
Vertical pretty! !##!!!!
