    In this week's video, Drs. Austin Baraki and Jordan Feigenbaum discuss weight-independent benefits of diet and lifestyle changes along with the role of the sub-conscious and conscious in eating behaviors. For lasting dietary pattern change, we recommend focusing on modifiable factors such as the food and eating environments, leveraging social support, etc. We do not think that relying on "willpower" is a good strategy, as it is fleeting and is "just trying harder" does not appear to work well.     I use food as an emotional crutch. When I get stressed, I eat. A lot. I think my weight levels are a reflection of neglecting fundamental aspects of my mental poise. When I am relaxed I simply have less hunger and eat a lot less.
    I suspect strengthening my emotional stability will over the long run, normalize my weight by eliminating overeating (as long as I eat and train sensibly)

    Struggled with weight all my life and literally never had a doctor say anything other than try harder.

    I’ve slowly permabulked to 270. Not fun, wouldn’t recommend, cutting sucks. Having good cardio and being light is just a better overall experience day to day

    I can recommend the book Atomic Habits.
    Not as a magic fix, but it does teach you to set up new habits and break bad habits.
    Its not a willpower thing youre not a bad person it migh be youre stuck in bad habits and need new ones.

    I really appreciate this kind of talk. I’m 6’0 and hovering around 300lbs. Not quite as bad as it sounds, I was a former D1 athlete (just graduated), have actually been improving my body comp since then, lift 4-5 times a week and a low week is 14k steps a day for me. But it’s _so_ hard to not eat, has been all my life and my dad was the same way. It sounds ridiculous to walk around at 300lbs and say I’m hungry but I’m genuinely starving a lot of the time. People roll their eyes and think I’m being dramatic, judge me for straight up inhaling large amounts of food and I’m like, I swear this just feels normal. Been that way since I was a little kid

      Did your coaches encourage you to get big AF then just kick you to the curb to figure out how to get the fat off and get healthy?

      @@RandomThings-nc8tw nah it really has nothing to do with them, they did want us over a certain number but it was always health first. I never got any weight gain talks because I was ever too light or heavy. I could still move fast, was still doing well in training and didn’t have health problems so they stayed out of my diet though there was a mutual understanding that I was gonna tackle the weight when I was done. My underweight teammates were encouraged to gain and anyone, thrower or not who really needed to drop weight for health / performance or at least seriously try to recomp was respectfully asked to and given guidance. I also never asked for any advice, I knew what I had to do but that it was just going to be hard

    For most people, yes. obesity can cause hormone imbalance, and also stifle performance of testosterone in the body. This is why many males start having gyno when obese.
    This is my counter question to people who are pro to the idea of having more fat:
    would you risk having more weight on your body, when it doesn't necessarily improve performance and hinders metabolism and recovery?
    would you be in caloric surplus for years, when your lifts won't be in world records?

    It’s pretty tru that people don’t choose to be hungry. To lose weight I used to have to be very hungry all the time. I dropped 12kgs like that but gained it back as well. This happened multiple times actually and in the end I just realised will power is prolly not gonna get me through that. I am still fat but this time around I have figured stuff out a bit more and weight is going down again. I am not hungry and that makes me feel optimistic about sustaining the weight loss this time.
    Btw I have been looking into Uric Acid, my doctor is saying it’s prolly because of protein and I should not have protein at all. I did my research on this. But couldn’t come to a definitive yes or no. Would you be able to shed some light on this? Thanks!

    How to cope with hunger during weight loss?

      Caffeine, increased fluid intake, increase fibre intake, increase fruit and vegetable & lean protein consumption. Also eat more regularly imo. 3 main meals a day and a snack between all the meals and something between dinner and the time you go to sleep.

      @@davidthomas9960 i eat multiple times a day and end up eating more.Also i eat small meals frequently & as a result get hungry and eat more.I end up cheating basically

      @@neversate is there other reasons you’re cheating? Emotional eating? Poor food environment? Calories too low?

      @@neversate It all depends. If you're crash dieting, you're more likely to cheat on your diet. I wouldn't drop calories too low (maybe start 200 below maintenance, then deduct more weekly until you reach -500) while exercising and doing cardio. Personally I found eating more fiber helping me a lot. You may also want to try portioning your calories through the day in various ways (for example, I found I'm able to keep to my calorie restriction much better if I eat breakfast within 2 hours of waking up rather than when I'd skip breakfast and eat lunch 5-6 hours after). Too many unknown details in your case for me to accurately address in this comment but if anything I said helps, great. Either way, best of luck (don't drastically slash calories, please, it's a time bomb)

      @@davidthomas9960 about 1950 calories (2450 is my approx maintenance calories) i.e 500 calorie deficit

    I’m sure there’s a ton of nuances that could go into this
    But do you guys feel with fitness adaptations from heavy and frequent resistance training
    That “ideal BMI” could be slightly higher or at least the window of what’s considered ideal be wider.
    For example at 6’0” at around 185-190 pounds, per the BMI chart I would be considered “overweight”.
    I feel like being at 185lbs as long as I’m incorporating other health promoting activities it’s probably not something I should worry about
    My questions more hypothetical in nature
    Do you think a heavily resistance trained person could “ideally” live at a slightly higher body weight the same way a light not resistance trained person.

      Note at 3min 17s in that video, Dr. Feigenbaum speaks of the limitations of BMI , especially when looking at individuals.

      @jon im speaking purely in forms of classification. If you plug in 185-190 in a BMI calculator that weight range is 25+ which is classified as overweight.
      I really don’t think anybody at 185 pounds at 6 ft needs to worry at all,
      I was just curious if they thought the those classifications and the BMI scale as a whole should be looked at differently for heavily resistance trained people.
      And based on the link to the video @A B linked im pretty sure I got my answer

      Bmi is just a guide really. Its not be all end all. Football pro would be on the overweight range but then factor in how much muscle mass they carry. Get a blood test to take out the guesswork if you really are concern.

    Do you think it does take willpower to some degree? I mean we all get hungry. We all feel full when we feel full. And I think it takes willpower to stick to an intervention. And those that do lose weight and stick to an intervention, that lost 100s of pounds are to be commended. Saying they didn’t have to use any willpower to continue minimizes their accomplishment.

      No one said it plays no role. However the idea that everyone is dealt the same set of cards in this situation - for example, the claim “we all feel full when we feel full”, as if appetite and satiety signaling happens the same for everyone - is inaccurate. As a result, those who struggle with these issues are not necessarily suffering from a deficiency of willpower, and suggesting that they are is unhelpful compared with more proven interventions we have available to better target the underlying biology.

I guess when Dr feig said we can focus on things we can change like diet and environment rather than focus on willpower which ignores those things, I interpreted that to mean he didn’t think willpower plays much of a role even for the interventions he just listed. And thanks for correcting my statement, “we all feel full when we feel full.” I said that trying to convey what you said how appetite and satiety signaling is different for each person.

    If I was fat and you told me If I want to improve my health I either need to eat less, or change my sources of fat etc but keep the same amount of calories....I'm losing some damn weight :D
