I’m debating on doing a EZ30/36 or 2GR swap for the GR86. The goal is 350-375hp (naturally aspirated). I’d like to go with the EZ mainly for the sound and lower center of gravity, but my main concern is reliability. Any advice would be appreciated.
Leave the EZ alone. 2gr makes more sense... My opinion naturally. What about VQ37HR? Seems a reliable engine to get over the 400 mark NA, certainly easier aftermarket
For stock application: 1) where are you routing the PCV valve hose to? I can see the other bank connecting to the intake pipe. 2) does the variable intake runner length “cutoff” 4,500K throw a code? Thank you,
Me/a lot of people are curious about what a stock 2gr with the new FMW/Wilhelm 3.5 inch intake pipes and tundra throttle body will do for power. Any plans to test these? I want to know if its worth upgrading from the old 3 inch stuff incase there is a slight power gain!
Is the Tundra throttle only worth it if you run your new intake? I'm planning my upgrade path and want to buy the wilhelm adaptor but wasn't sure whether to buy the 2gr or tundra version. Long term I'm thinking the EZ cams, your MAF intake and map.
@@matthewpalfrey2147 The tundra throttle body added no power with my tests when i used the stock intake manifold. I was really hoping it would add at least 5whp but sometimes the tests don't go the way you want them to. The 263-EZP cams combined with the new intake the 3.5" MAF and my latest tune should make some pretty nice power. I need to run that test yet to get an exact number but i expect it to be pretty nice.
This is actually with the stock rails and injectors. In the video i did it with the Haltech because that's what i was testing the tune with but this works with the stock ECU.
Very impressive engineering Sir, I have 2018 Camry with 2GR-FKS, 3 inch down pipe to 3 inch center exhaust, D3 Performance tune for headers and 93 octane, RIPP superchargers coil packs, I made a custom cold air intake that is 5 inches diameter with throttle body tube of 3 1/2 inch MAF intake and I am a BOOSTANE Fuel Additive Dealer so I use 91 octane with Boostane to get 100 octane... Will your custom intake and Tundra 76mm throttle body with adapter work on my Camry 2GR-FKS, please reply, thanks.
I really wish Toyota would have stuck with the 7GR-FKS name instead of renaming it to the 2GR-FKS because it understandably makes people think the engines are very similar but unfortunately they are not.
@@Mj3_ed 7GR-FKS is what the 2GR-FKS has stamped internally on several of the parts. I suspect the name was supposed to be 7GR-FKS but they renamed it to 2GR-FKS at the last minute to use the 2GR-FE's reputation.

I do have another build i'm putting together somewhat differently that i hope will be able to hit 440whp.

What’s your opinion on the unichip ecu tuner plug and play units? I’m considering maybe buying to see but as you have plenty of experience working with the 2ar-fe engine, I figured I’d ask. Would you say consider it or go with something else. I do like how unichip has the ability to change maps for drivability much like cobb
the unichip is just a modern take on an old school sensor value modifier. it does not actually modify the tune but it can make the ECU access different parts of the map. The 2GR and 2AR have a lot of plausibility stuff in the ECU that would detect too much fuckery. But more importantly the stock ECU really isn't holding the engine back so there's nothing to gain until you modify the physical intake and exhaust or engine internals to make it flow better and at that point, small changes can likely be tweaked by the unichip to make it react better to those changes.
Sweet videos! Just starting to get into cars and have learned so much from watching your videos. Own a tc and cant wait for you to get back to the other engine build! Really wanna do some of the things that you've done to that engine but still not confident enough yet. I've been watching this build as well just to try and learn as much as possible! Plus great videos! I can tell you have gotten better at editing and talking to the camera along the way! Thanks for your time and dedication in all of these builds!
I have a 2gr-fks in my Camry trd, I’m having throttle body issues and looking for a alternative options to upgrade my bottle body, do you know or have the throttle body you use from the tundru would bolt onto the newer intake manifolds?
The graph shown is actually a bit worse than it actually is. the run with the intake was my first tune from scratch with the Haltech on the 2GR and i was missing midrange in the tune itself. I'm working on getting updated info posted up
So it may be possible to make the 400whp setup with a stock ECU but this exact motor as i've got it put together would not work with the stock ECU. The biggest issue is the fact that the cams are not timed as the stock ECU expects because that would allow the valves to hit the pistons. But if you were to use different pistons with bigger valve cuts you could install the cams as the ECU expects them to be. as for the 76mm throttle body, that's probably too small, the math shows it as being a bit marginal so it may be worth trying but it will likely choke the flow a bit but Toyota has an 82mm throttle body available also and if that's not enough it could be bored out but 82mm is likely big enough.
Yes, they should be available soon but i do have a few slightly blemished parts if you want one you can have one now at a discount. Just reach out and we can discuss it and I'll show you pictures.
I was thinking about and a little curious... What would the 4.0L(1Gr crank) look like with the big throttle body, largest cams, this intake, and headers. Would you keep around that 400hp while lowering the rev range for the power band? Just thinking that it might reduce the need for new springs and maybe even pic up a few HP.
Unfortunately the 1GR-FE crank does not fit in the 2GR-FE. Also the valve springs are needed to get the valve lift from these cams so those aren't optional no matter what the RPM range is.
As far as i know it does but the price is just too much to be worth testing since it's out of range for most and there's really not any junkyard availability on it.
I've got a scion TC and want to get that up to spec with your cams/intake but I won't have the cash til next year. Do you think you will still be selling those parts through next year?
Do you have anything in the works for a replacement/upgraded lower for use with OEM intakes? Or is the best option to just do some Dremel work on an OEM piece?
Can I swap an auto u760e from 2AR-fxe 14’ Camry to 14’ Scion tC. Mines giving out and it’s the cheapest option. Are they’re any differences like in the tcu or harness that you would know of?
Some of the EA6x transmissions do bolt right up to the 2AR and the 2GR and i do have an EA60 here to measure things up but at this point it's just heavy and offers no real advantage. That may change in the future as i do more R&D.
The Rav4 2GR-FE is the same exact motor as i'm using here. I don't know how well it'll clear stuff in your engine bay but there's no reason you can't do the same things to your 2GR as i've shown in these videos.
Realistically, this intake was never really intended to be used in this configuration. This video was made because it was neat but unless the plan is to add even more at a later this intake is not really a good plan. A better design could be made to work much better with the stock cams, this one is made for big power.
Unfortunately the FKS has a different intake bolt pattern. It's also very unlikely to be what's holding back the motor. The y-pipe is the biggest restriction on the stock setup.
I have a 2007 rav4 with the 2gr and I was wondering if its possible to do all of this to my rav considering it's the same engine. I don't see why not but I would love your input. btw thank you for the vids this engine doesn't get enough attention.
This can certainly apply to any 2GR-FE but keep in mind the first restriction in the 2GR is the exhaust system and fixing that restriction can make the car a lot louder than most people would want.
@@FrankensteinMotorworks thank you for the reply. My rav is already side dumped and loud as shit (in a good way) so the noise isn’t an issue. I’ll for sure be buying your stuff for my car after I save up a bit
When you say "5s" do you mean the 5S-FE motor that is one of the options on here? if so, it's about 2.5x more power than the 5S-FE. If you're saying bearing 5 seconds 0-60 then yes, even before this the car is already deep into the 4's. With some of the lighter versions of this car it likely get's into the high 3's 0-60mph. Or did you mean something else entirely?
@@FrankensteinMotorworks I think gr might be lighter but it can't ever hold as much as the 5s block before complete overhaul can handle more power. Highest output is 1000hp smoking tires video
You can buy it with a 10mm drop spacer and you have to modify the rain guard but the engine lid closes just fine. With that said, i'm working on a reduced height version that will fit better.
I have a mr2 spyder, the motor blew and i am a broke college student but still want to do an engine swap as cheaply as possible. what do u recommend or could you do a series of the cheapest swap and make at least around 200 whp.
Honestly, i would just recommend putting another 1zz in it. Nothing else will come close in simplicity and cost. A 2ZR swap looks like it could be cheap and simple but nobody has confirmed it so if you're broke and you need this transportation now is not really the time to find out.

The graph shown is actually a bit worse than it actually is. the run with the intake was my first tune from scratch with the Haltech on the 2GR and i was missing midrange in the tune itself. I'm working on getting updated info posted up
@@FrankensteinMotorworks I love your work. Can’t wait for the upcoming videos. 👍
So the 400 whp can't be achieved with the 76 mm throttle body and the stock ecu? Not even with the piggy back?
@@FrankensteinMotorworks so the stoxk sienna ecu can read an 82 mm throttle body? I was not aware of that. Thank you for the answer!
Hey Marc, unrelated question, will there be another run of 2AR lower intake manifolds in the future?
Yes, they should be available soon but i do have a few slightly blemished parts if you want one you can have one now at a discount. Just reach out and we can discuss it and I'll show you pictures.
Tim Barnes
what about swapping in the 3 cylinder from the GR Carolla?
I'm sure it can be done once the prices on the motors drop.
how can i make this work in a 2gr-fe sienna?
I was thinking about and a little curious... What would the 4.0L(1Gr crank) look like with the big throttle body, largest cams, this intake, and headers. Would you keep around that 400hp while lowering the rev range for the power band? Just thinking that it might reduce the need for new springs and maybe even pic up a few HP.
Unfortunately the 1GR-FE crank does not fit in the 2GR-FE. Also the valve springs are needed to get the valve lift from these cams so those aren't optional no matter what the RPM range is.
wondering if the 2GR mods will work on a 1GR - 500cc bigger displacement and rwd - could make a great swap engine for rwd cars
The single vvt-i 1GR is a very different motor but the dual vvt-i unit would likely be able to benefit from a very similar path.
Does the 84mm rc-f throttle have the same output signal ? Not for just an intake build . I’m thinking that 84-87mm might be good for intake plus cam.
As far as i know it does but the price is just too much to be worth testing since it's out of range for most and there's really not any junkyard availability on it.
I've got a scion TC and want to get that up to spec with your cams/intake but I won't have the cash til next year. Do you think you will still be selling those parts through next year?
I can't make promises but right now my intention is indeed to continue carrying those parts.
@@FrankensteinMotorworks No promises needed XD Hope they're still in stock when I can get to it. Thanks for the reply o/
Do you have anything in the works for a replacement/upgraded lower for use with OEM intakes? Or is the best option to just do some Dremel work on an OEM piece?
That is not currently in the plans. The stock piece does not take much work to fix compared to what the production part would cost to replace it.
Can I swap an auto u760e from 2AR-fxe 14’ Camry to 14’ Scion tC. Mines giving out and it’s the cheapest option. Are they’re any differences like in the tcu or harness that you would know of?
Have you ever tried any of the 6spd e series, like the ea65? do you know if theres any differences in the bell housing?
Some of the EA6x transmissions do bolt right up to the 2AR and the 2GR and i do have an EA60 here to measure things up but at this point it's just heavy and offers no real advantage. That may change in the future as i do more R&D.
Thank you sir. Can I put this on a 2grfe rav4???
The Rav4 2GR-FE is the same exact motor as i'm using here. I don't know how well it'll clear stuff in your engine bay but there's no reason you can't do the same things to your 2GR as i've shown in these videos.
Hey I have a Lexus GS 350 (2013) 2grfse will that all work as qell
Any luck closing the engine lid with that intake? Turbo lid without rain guard?
Yes, as long as you remove ths rain guard and get the 10mm drop spacer things will fit fine.
Is there a way to valve the intake so we dont loose bottom end....for us highlander guys😊
Realistically, this intake was never really intended to be used in this configuration. This video was made because it was neat but unless the plan is to add even more at a later this intake is not really a good plan. A better design could be made to work much better with the stock cams, this one is made for big power.
@FrankensteinMotorworks but I like big power. Hehe I'm looking into the supercharger kit off the lotus with the toyota 2gr-fe v6
Will this fit my wife's Toyota Highlander FKS motor? Lol
Unfortunately the FKS has a different intake bolt pattern. It's also very unlikely to be what's holding back the motor. The y-pipe is the biggest restriction on the stock setup.
Please mess with the 1gr-fe Tacoma motors
I’ll for sure be buying your stuff for my car after I save up a bit
so this definetley beats 5s NA, or does it..... enlighten me
When you say "5s" do you mean the 5S-FE motor that is one of the options on here? if so, it's about 2.5x more power than the 5S-FE.
No mo vids ???
How does one close the engine lid?
@@FrankensteinMotorworks thanks for the honesty.
Just saying man, although I agree doing RUclips videos etc. Looks like you need a break and probably some R&R.
Bro how i can contact you?
its been 6month, i want to see that 250hp hybrid 2ar with OEM ECU 😭
