The German cook of my late mother-in-law was the first to introduce this girl to caraway seeds. They had something in the Buffalo area called Beef on Weck/Wik. The rolls for the sandwich are made with kimawik (sp?) Salt. I fell in love with caraway seeds.
@@courtneyritter1285 my grandmother dries her own mint! You can buy dried mint, I recommend going to Indian spice stores in person or online. You could definitely use fresh mint here, having dried in your pantry is amazing to throw into salads
It's a Palestinian cabbage salad, not Polish. Polish slaw with the addition of apple makes it a sweet slaw. This is a savoury cabbage salad, not sweet slaw. Both are great.
I love it! Sometimes lettuce is so boring. And I like the crunch of cabbage. This is the perfect sauerkraut recipe - minus the yogurt, of course. I’ll make half and eat it during the week. Save the remainder for sauerkraut.
Will definitely be making this simple yet full of delicious flavours, salad. I have a cabbage in the fridge straight from the veggie garden. Can you make more vegan food please! Thank you!! X

I'm always looking for savoury-vs-sweet cabbage salad (not "slaw") recipes, and this one is absolutely wonderful! Definitely does not need the yogurt addition. The lemon and olive oil dressing with the fresh herbs (I used fresh mint with the fresh dill, not dried) makes for a most wonderfully healthy and addictive cabbage salad! Thanks for this wonderful recipe. I served it tonight with grilled salmon and it was delicious! I chopped everything fine in the food processor, but to make this quicker, just use a bag of pre-shredded cabbage (not with carrot).
This was delicious! I followed the recipe mostly, except exchanged the dried mint, which we don’t like, for a generic seasoning mix; and sour cream instead of yogurt. The dill was wonderful! Thank u!
One sees so many recipes that call for garlic powder when the real deal could be used instead. Garlic powder has lost most of any nutritional value it once had (Allicin, vitamin C) so why compromise your health by using just the dried powder. Can't quite figure that out.
@@blenderbenderguy I usually get a super nice organic one from Kirkland, it's mostly just used on things like popcorn, but it makes it easy/quick here but you def can use raw garlic. I've done that too.
@@blenderbenderguy If you eat a well balanced diet skipping for garlic powder every now and then isn’t going to deprive you of nutrients what so ever, sometimes it’s okay to eat just to enjoy, you have to feed your soul too and sometimes you just want a subtle garlic flavor that the powder offers vs the punch of the raw, it also lets you coat everything very evenly with a taste of garlic.
My grandmother and mother always made this to go with Mjudera - pottage style, not the drier pilaf style. It's a classic combo and powerful comfort food in my Lebanese-American family. All best to you Nadia.
I make something similar. I use grated and chopped cucumber , drained. I also add white vinegar with the olive oil and salt and lemon with the cabbage at let it sit in fridge for some hours before adding anything else . This is so similar to a Serbian salad I make. I use white wine vinegar instead of lemon, no scallions or dill, just cabbage and sesame seeds, so simple, so delicious. I can tell your version is delicious, too. I love your idea about a touch of yogurt. Second would be wheat grass, but that one is more like lawn clippings to me. Aside from those two, I love all other leafy vegetables and greens.
a mistake I think many folks make with raw kale in salads is not massaging it- try massaging it with your hands and half an avocado and see how it completely changes texture and becomes super yummy. Kale requires an extra bit of love I think.
@@NadiaGilbert Thanks for the tip! I will see if that changes things on kale for me. Am I supposed to massage it with the outside of the avocado or the inside?
@@Rakerong No skin, just cut up a few pieces of avocado and use your hands to mush the fatty fruit with the kale, and a little pinch of salt, you'll notice after a few minutes that it softens a lot and is so much nicer to eat raw :)

Cabbage salads suck if you don't chop it really thinly. The only way to do that is with a mandolin. Then, cabbage becomes a different entire ingredient and taste 100 times better. A really finely sliced cabbage with mandolin, along with some shredded carrot and minced parsley with a lemon - olive oil dressing makes the perfect side dish to any meat or fish or even starchy vegetable.
As an avid cabbage consumer, I cannot agree more. When I am not in the mood to do all the chopping, I buy mine already chopped, smothered in my homemade dressing ,works out very well :)
