Her line “She can be bored, but never boring” perfectly summarizes her being apathetic. Even if she's indifferent, she still genuinely cares about Riley.
if you think about it Ennui is actually really important in the context of the world because she is the emotion that keeps the other emotions under control, both in the sarcasm scene and in the post-credit dinner scene while all the other emotions freak out and get too over-emotional (haha) to figure out what to do, Ennui shows up and handles the situation with calm stoicism, and I think that is the true function of Ennui
Ennui seems to be the great regulator she mellows out what gets too rowdy and she has the power to make riley stop caring over something if obsessing over it would be bad
Ennui is an "Anti-Emotion" she stops Riley from caring about anything unlike what all the other emotions do. Happiness cares about her enjoyment, Sadness about her present pain, fear cares about her safety, anxiety cares about her future, among others. Ennui, doesn't care that is her character. We can also see what the lack of care does to everyone. It divides people, it divides the primary emotions and the other parts of her brain through the Sar-chasam. It also divides Riley from her friends by showing a lack of care. It's interesting how so many people cared for a lack of care.
I think something else that is interesting to note about Ennui that I wish was more apparent in the movie. Is that she’s kinda like a base line emotion. The other emotions at times, when in overdrive, can become too energetic. Ennui sort of acts as an opposite to that. She could bring Riley down to a level that’s more base instead of heightened to preserve energy.
I'm kind of disappointed by this video. Ennui is more than just the 'sar-chasm'. Think about the three times she bothers to do anything - her introduction, she makes a decision for Riley regarding Val while Joy and Anxiety are arguing; when the emotions are panicking over Riley liking 'cringey' middle school songs, that's when she creates the sar-chasm; when all the other emotions are afraid to tell Riley's parents anything, she just does THE MOST teenage thing: 'it was good'. The common theme is she steps in when no-one else knows what to do. She can keep Riley from blowing up. Imagine the scene where Riley's mum wakes her up, but Ennui is there. That's what makes her both brilliant, and funny.
this is the analysis i was looking for! Ennui saved Riley so many times, sometimes even building up the courage to physically touch the control panel (which makes a loud buzzing noise, as if even the control panel knows that it’s serious business when Ennui gets up) i think also Ennui is the perfect presentation of using apathy as a way of deflecting one’s true emotions. i thought this was the “power” that the author was alluding to: an ol’ reliable emotion to fall back on whenever faced with conflict, as you mention. And maybe that is why the only time we see Ennui express any other emotion is when she can’t find her phone (just imagine being alone in a social setting without the safety of your phone!!!) Ennui is such a charming character because she is such a typical teenager emotion that we all relate to and we all can agree has allowed us to feel comfortable in our own bubble by presenting as apathetic. This video doesn’t do her justice at all (i mean it only really talked about her for 2 minutes)
I recently listened to a conference about the relationship between anxiety and depression. A neurobiologist said that, in many people, depression is actually a coping mechanism for extreme anxiety. It tunes down our emotions and makes us apathetic, stopping us from hurting ourselves or making bad decisions due to anxiety. However, it becomes a problem if our brain doesn't know how to get out of it, because it also stops us from taking care of ourselves and making good decisions. Ennui is like the healthier, more moderate version of depression. Sometimes it's better to stop caring so much.
Here are the new emotions ranked for me (Favorite to Least Favorite): 1. Anxiety/Embarrassment (Both for different reasons; Anxiety because, duh, she's the big gun of the new emotions and she had the most to do for the plot. But Embarrassment is from a storytelling perspective and how he SHOWS but doesn't TELL how he feels or does certain actions, especially when helping Sadness in HQ) 2. Ennui (Because I managed to predict that she would show more than just pure lethargy as her personality. Additionally, it's how unique she feels compared to the other emotions, by being able to control the console remotely via her phone, and by being a bilingual queen.) 3. Envy (Not a bad emotion by any means, but she could've been a little more interesting. Like she could've had a moment where something catches her eye and the urge to have it is so uncontrollable, that she turns into a savage ravaging gremlin trying to get it.)
I'll be honest, I started watching your channel because of inside out 2, and I thought I'd go after the videos. But I want to stay, so thanks for the reminder, thanks for the videos and thanks for making me have a smile
Ennui is probably my favorite of the new emotions, she’s extremely relatable and yeah the Sar-Chasm scene was one of my favorites. Inside Out 2 is such a great movie and I’m glad you did an analysis on all the new characters!
I found your channel through Inside Out 2 content, and I'm staying for your way of making videos. I'm more of an essay watcher myself, but your videos about movies appeal to my interest of both long-term content and in depth explanations of movies. Inside Out 2 content was good until it's dry, but I'm still gonna sit at the fountain for more water.
I love how you're portraying the new emotions as different types of antagonists, it makes me compare similarities with emotions and types of antagonists :D
I am very happy for you being able to reach 10k recently and your great success over this time. I've enjoyed your thoughts and conclusions on antagonist writing. And I wish you the best for the future. I'd like to hear more about what makes certain traits of a character more or less functional for the role of the story they are in. Because you are very well articulated and I enjoy the insight. 😊
One thing I'd be curious about is what is the extreme of each emotion, like the emotion at its peak in the worse sense. For Anxiety, that would obviously be an Anxiety Disorder. Ennui, to me, leans to depression. Because boredom and apathy and just a disinterest in life and it's many facets is a sign of depression. Envy could lead to extreme jealousy and entitlement. What could Embarassmwnt's peak negativity be at?
Im stupid i thought this was gonna be a multi-hour long video for some reason and when i heard that half the video was already finished i genuinely was shocked
I typically look to Shin Godzilla for an apathetic antagonist. It doesn't show any amount of malice as he levels Tokyo, no pain as its dorsal spines get blasted off, not a hint of care in the world.
Yo I love this video! Found you from another inside out video and I’ve been hooked ever since. The tv around all the movie clips is a great stylistic choice. I’ll be tuning in to more of your videos in the future! ❤🎉🎉
What makes Ennui work is that even though she ACTS like she doesn’t care, she actually does. I was a teenager myself and Ennui would’ve been the emotion that took the most control during my teenage years. The thing is that I often acted like I didn’t care because I didn’t WANT to care. I was avoiding caring, because if I cared about something so little and trivial, then I would be a crybaby or acting like the dramatic teenager. I hated dramatic teenagers that complained about every little thing and often saw my older siblings as teenagers be terrible to my parents. So, I lacked any of it so I didn’t act like those kind of teenagers. I’d imagine my Inside Out 2 story would be my Ennui taking over everything while the other new emotions would be bottled up. Ennui has power and can be destructive the moment you least expect it, because she has a tablet that can control Riley without being at the control center. She’s also the most underestimated because she lacks so much care that none of the other emotions pay attention to her. She’s the default when the other emotions don’t know how to respond and that can hold so much power.
Enchanted, obviously it depends on what you post in the future, but I'm usually interested in what creators want to make, not just what they feel obligated to make.

I appreciate this movie for not leaning that much into the cool, tech-centric youngster theme that this movie could’ve easily tackled and failed miserably at, bordering on “hello fellow kids” territory. Ennui was as far they could go in heading towards that direction and they wisely kept it as limited as possible.
So Ennui can create a sarchasm but disgust in the first movie made Riley say “that sounds fantastic” in a sarcastic sounding way in the scene where her parents ask her about school. I guess that wasn’t sarcastic or not powerful enough to create a sarchasm? Or a retcon.
You need to do that video about Riley herself, as I feel she's the biggest thing that seperates the first and second movie.
