- This special was shot for The Tom Green Show for Canadian public access TV. This aired live on a Thursday night from 11pm until midnight. This experimental episode is part performance art part complete insanity. The idea was to create a live Christmas special where in the early introductory moments it's host, Tom Green, suffers a meltdown of sorts, but continues broadcasting a under improvised spell for the remaining 55 minutes. Doesn't get much weirder than this. You may want to watch the entire episode. But only if you dare.
Imagine being some older person in Ottawa and turning this on. "What a nice young man" The he starts losing his shit over a candy cane.

@Ali Desch I've always wanted to ask Tom Green if he ever considered making the Green Tom show. I know it's kind of a dumb question, but I mean it could have been funny to make a special that was a bizarro version of his regular show in some way.

I'm going to make my kids watch this every Christmas, and when they tearfully ask why, I'll tell them that if we don't watch the crazy man on the TV, he'll come over.

When I first watched this, I was 16. Been following Tom ever since. It's great growing old with people we admire, as we watch them search for peace in life. Thanks, Tom Green.
Must be from Ottawa. This is when it was still basically local cable in Ottawa in 95. The Rogers years. Then not long after it was on in all of Ontario. Then the Comedy Network by 97. MTV in 99.

It was on the Tom Green or MTV website around 2000 but the next year it was gone. I too have been looking for it for some time :)
I had it recorded on VHS from when it aired. I used to watch it every christmas. So glad I found it and can continue the tradition.

The first time I ever saw Tom Green, he was doing a segment where he sprawled on the curb with a mangled bike, convincing people he was hit by a car. Loved him ever since. Oh, and this Dan guy sounds like the life of the party!

I suffer from major depression and anxiety as well...tried self medicating for years and years, which only made shit a million times worse .. Tried every anti depressant/anti-anxiety medicine ..nothing works...except laughter ..love and laughter is the best medicine for sure! :)

Ya know I grew up watching all his episodes knowing it was special then...a new breed of candid comedy. This however is my favorite piece of performance art from our buddy Tom....the legend. This was of legendary proportions. So glad to behold, it's absolutely hilarious and so many other things....I was frightened :D

It's like people say Tom Green was genius. It seemed like the minute things got stagnant he would spice it up with a voice change or a little simple change in energy that brought you right back into it. His comedy was even better. I love watching this stuff man.

Two years late but kids haven't watched mtv in like a decade, it's almost entirely aimed at the "way too old to be interested in this" demographic of like mid-20's to late 30's. Fuck my MOM watches mtv now, more than I ever did, and I taped the 3am music video block almost nightly to catch new music

It really offends me that its been 24 years and I haven't seen this Christmas Special. I will be adding this to my annual Christmas movie watch list.
I guess unless you lived in Ottawa or Ontario between 94-96 you didn't get to see those 50 epidodes nor the 25 on the Canadian content on the Comedy Network in 97 snd 98. Other than some clips on here and the ones they reused on the MTV version.
He was saying he now owns over a 1000 hours of footage, from the many versions between 1994 and 2014 (popping up here and there up to 2016 actually) but probably won't post as he says some are way too amateurish.
Some home versions in the 2000s would go on for hours and one version of those was nightly and sometimes went on for many hours as they drank all night on some or something like that.
He was even live streaming the show years before live streaming was officially invented in 2007.
He was using a technology call video toasting or something and doing it as early as 2003 or 2004 (before the the official 2006 internet home show started).
The first 99 MTV version too only lasted a year, and the second 2003 MTV version lasted a year as well (plus the early 2000 MTV specials in between them).
Endless hours from his internet show he archived for some reason too.
This is the greatest display of stellar acting ability known to man. It will transcend the ages. All others who own Oscar's are mere nubes in comparison. Tom is our generation's Shakespeare of the stage.

Had not seen this one before, and I like to think that I've seen basically 95% of your stuff.
Time to bump up that percentage now.
I understand that sometimes you second guess some of your decisions back in the day, now that you're an "adult".
But the truth is that the really weird, "go with your instinct" stuff, was and is the best.
I didn't think it was "classic" or all that special at the time.
I was wrong about that though.
Considering how things went, and where we're at now, this kind of thing is more golden than you could've ever predicted.
For lack of better advice, I'm gonna go with, "UNLEASH THE FURY!"
