people can't just "not move back" or even move away. A huge amount of people in new orleans do not have the resources to even make a move. They are barely able to keep their homes now. They do not have cars. New Orleans has a rich culture and history, you cannot just abandon it...
It’s 2021 right now. Even 16 years later this city still hasn’t recovered from this storm because some people just never came back after it.
@@jacob1st760 it’s late 2021 rn and Ida is here on the anniversary of Katrina
@@juju0K_ yeah same date it will hit crazy
Thats smart
Laurie Regal this area should have never been built up to live on. It was swamp and wetlands before humans decided to destroy it. So I have zero sympathy for people that live near water when they know the risk and if you didn't know it's your fault for not looking into it. There should be no funding or government assistance for living in a area with a known risk like New Orleans. We as a country shouldn't have to be punished for paying for everyone's else's mistakes.
I am currently visiting N.O. as we speak, and I happen to think it is a very beautiful city, and rich with lots of history and culture.
Nino Blacque Be that as it may, it shouldn't have been built where it was.
Stfu
Nino Blacque New Orleans is a very beautiful city indeed.

Went there this year for Mardi Gras and I absolutely love everything about it it’s sooo different eccentric a city like no other

New Orleans is a very very flooding coastal city, but it is also very important because it delivers goods to every state in the US even some parts of Canada🙂🙂🙂
Yeah so do many other port cities
@@mom_im_losing_it yea but they got dat shrimp
Not every state. The river doesn’t even reach canada
New Orleans is pretty much becoming atlantis
How depressing.
America should hire Dutch engineers. They are the best when it comes to designing cities below sea level.
What are dutch engineers?
@@ChrisSmith-zv1qd lol engineers from the netherlands.
@@jetscapo9737 thanks bro
@@ChrisSmith-zv1qd for sure. The reason why is cuz the netherlands (amsterdam/holland) where dutch people are from, the entire country is like 70% under sea level. Their Levee system and anti-flood engineering is the best in the world.
@@jetscapo9737ut we rather to spend money on creating wars with china and highways, we don’t even have a good healthcare system, imagine our government spending on something that really helps people
hurricane ida is coming tomorrow. i’m so worried for louisiana ):
Just pray
We good !
They good
At least I think
It's the start of hurricane season again and I had to go back and watch some of the videos about Katrina and IDA! Between the two Ida was the worst as far as what I went through! Both were massive and destructive storms but going through both myself I think Ida was slightly worse except for the levies breaking with Katrina!
I mean the levees are better than the 2005 levees. The levees we're neglected for centuries and now that a natural disaster hit they made the levees more stronger. But the coastal wetlands are still sinking and the city is below sea level.
My deepest sincerest condolences to anybody that has lost any type of loved one and this catastrophe disaster. And to all the people that were left picking up the pieces and having to try to move on my prayers sympathy the best luck to you now
Iam glad there are intelligent people like national geographic they got the full education on this subject
Well I was unavailable. Glad it turned out 👍 👌 just kidding
I’m in New Orleans today for the first time. Of course Is 2023 now, and it’s being 18 years since Katrina. I can only imagine what people dealt with back then. Fast forward to 2023, the city is still vibrant and full of life
We never go out quietly💯
I asked my grandma and she said it built like a bowl and when it filled up to much it sinks and she put it in a bowl and that hit me hard
This would've never happened if they didn't build the whole entire city into a bowl.
americanliberal09 you are right
When the French first settled New Orleans, they established the city in what's now called the French Quarter because it's actually harder soil that's about 10' above sealevel and used it as a port for shipping up the river since rivers were the highways in the 16 and 1700s. Then the city started expanding by cutting down swamps and bogs and putting buildings there and that's why most of the current city is under water. It should've stayed in the original part of the city. Places like Metarie and Kenner are bad off because Bayou Gentilly and Bayou Metarie used to supply the surrounding soil with water. Peat shrinks like a sponge when the water supply is cut down.
@@TheLouisianan
Harder soil?
No.
It's all the same. It's swampland.
They built in the quarter because it was the highest ground.
@@johnallenlauridsenjr.3395 harder is a subjective word. Of the marsh that was there, the quarter was the best place to build a port.
Meaning they shouldn't have continued building there once they knew New Orleans was gonna go get destroyed years before katrina.
I used to think that N'awlins was the only place that Katrina hit because so much of the news coverage focused on that city. I was surprised to learn that Katrina hit other areas as well.
CloudchaserShaconag Mississippi had it worse
@@eliwyatt4605 really??? ill watch it now
Katrina come through South Florida..damaged here and there...as it crossed over the west coast of Florida and went into the Gulf of Mexico it was a category 4...it was horrible
Katrina never hit New Orleans, it passed right by it, look at the weather maps for the path Katrina took and you will see this.
Katrina did NOT cause the massive flooding. It is 100% the Army Corp of Engineers.
NYC should be worrying now about increasing sea waters.
i remember being there , what a tragic event ;c
Add to that the climate effect on rising sea levels.... I want a piece of that real estate action.
Oh boy, here we go again
As ida bears down on same evil day so many happy they relocated
I’m here bc I was born in NO and had to move after this. Well my family moved us bc the schools and crime got so bad after we came back. I keep having horrible dreams of the ocean coming in again, for more than 6 months it feels like. I’m almost scared to go back to even visit
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Prayers for you and your family
I used to get so aggravated when all I hear is “NOLA this NOLA that” when the subject of Katrina comes up. Over the years I got over it but I can at least say that both Louisiana and Mississippi were affected greatly by Katrina. However people who were not in MS during Katrina will never understand the frustration the media caused us when our MS coast cities all looked like they were nuked by a bomb and then when you talk to other people from other places about Katrina, people ask “Oh I thought the storm hit New Orleans?” -_-
During Katrina in MS, I watched a tornado touchdown and wipe out an entire FAMILY, buildings collapsing, 9 hours of constant 120mph wind and roaring, and then after the storm, we lived outside for two weeks praying that it would rain cause of the heat and dehydration. That experience really messed with me physically and mentally.
Yet, the levees break in NOLA and all of a sudden (me as a MS Katrina survivor) according to the media, I was no longer classified as a Katrina victim. Don’t get me wrong, what happened in NOLA was messed up! But let me just say this, Mississippi got brunt of the STORM, Louisiana’s main issue was the levees breaking -which was due to poor management and the priorities of the city.
You can ask just about any Mississippi resident about what I just wrote and they will agree 100%.
So basically yall didn't matter to them?
Daniel G. Yep. Pretty much lol.
Sheesh, little late for a reply but I was wondering, 1800 deaths 638 in New Orleans they confirmed…..that’s half. Please due tell me more I’d love to hear your/families friends stories. You should be heard :)
@@hudsonmatz2123 Also, from what I can remember, Katrina was originally projected to make a direct impact in NOLA. Hours before making landfall, the storm took a strong right turn and the majority of the storm went up Mississippi. The entire state was impacted. And we were all under the impression that we would only get parts of it, but we were dead wrong. And at that point, it was way too late to pack up and evacuate.
this along with animal and weather videos is why i subscribed to nationalgeographic
I so sorry for 2005 instead of us saying 2005 we say the hurricane killer year lol
All in all, where the city is located today, this was the WORST place to build New Orleans because it's located below sea level.
And exactly at the 16th anniversary there’s another one coming 😓

It's 'BELOW SEA LEVEL'!!!.. I never thought it was a great idea to build a great city (on the coast) below sea-level.. But even more perplexing to me..is that I just found out my adult children have planned a vacation there (In AUGUST), while I'm scheduled for major surgery!?!.. Strange Days...
How was the surgery?
Irony is. Another huge hurricane ida is hitting lousiana in August in 2021.
Yea I'd say building houses below sea level and the largest river basin flood zone in the US Iwould say that's man made alright if your going to builds below sea level and in a flood zone better have houses able to rise up and float when the flood waters start coming in
They knew it was going to happen
How so 🤔
I mean natural disasters such as floods and hurricanes have been a problem since the city's settlement, another problem is poverty, the city has a high crime rate and poverty rate. People can't afford cars to ride out the storm. The city relys on the people to find a way out during a hurricane.
that’s one of the issues, the city is unlivable in many ways, you can’t escape a flooding without a car, that’s sad
Interesting I never knew this
These wetlands also help slow the hurricanes I watched a documentary on this the other day
Oysters can do the same too, but the rising sea levels make them useless. A foot of an oyster wall can slow down a storm surge by a little and calm it. But it's useless.
would love to go to New Orleans. especially go to Mardi Gras at least 1x
It's a loud and obnoxious nightmare
Now i wonder why Natgeo doesn't get much views.....

Vist noen starter rivnings firma med gravemarskin er ja da må det da vere mye jobb for rivnings firmaer er alt ryddet opp?
Vist denne byen synker ja va skjer da med vann og kloakk rør?
Why not build massive catch basins or canels that run tru the city and only fill during a hurricane or levee break
Does anybody know what type of tapping drum or instrument this is at 2:11...SBN RESONATE

Is stupid build a city underwater... In a hurricane zone!
americans right? lol
Mint Mastering it was founded by the French so I don’t wtf your saying lol
Sabareesh Sudhagar. Yes, it was. Though New Orleans has been American for 300 years LOL
Well long ago people didnt know it was below sea level I guess
Yeah 200-300 years ago they knew very little of sea level geographically around that area, also had little knowledge of STORM surge from hurricanes as well as global warming. If you are in New Orleans and never knew this you wouldn't look around and first thought be "we may be below sea level" you would OF been laughed at and told" IF that were true where is the water"? It wasn't until Mabry 30-40 years ago they understood what danger the city was in.
2021
I live in Louisiana...
Why did this happen
Må jo bere mye jobb med og rive gamle bygg?
The dutch don't get massive seasonal hurricanes. Bad analogy.
New Orleans was not hit by Katrina. Katrina passed right by New Orleans and hit the Mississippi coast destroying everything in it's path.
New Orleans was hit by it , stupid

And almost 7 years later nothing has really changed.
Three things have changed:
1) The New Orleans Levee Board has been replaced by the Southeast Flood Protection Authority.
2) Mayor Nagin, who rejected the Amtrak relief train, is no longer with us.
3) Governor Blanco, who set up a New Orleans Hurricane Relief Foundation with herself, her husband and her lawyer, Robert Perrot, as the board, is no longer with us. The Foundation is still listed in Newport Beach, Ca.
