One Armed Bow Drill Fire

  • Greg shows us his preferred method in starting a friction fire with a bow drill, which only requires the use of one arm. If you’re in a REAL survival situation, there is a good chance you are conserving energy, if not injured. This method gives you the tools and strategies that will make it easier to start a fire in these dire circumstances.
Greg is a self-taught survivalist from Canal Flats, British Colombia, who, since he was a boy, has read nearly every book on the topic. When he is not out in the wilderness, he is a professional dry-waller. He started his first bow drill fire when he was thirteen and spent the next forty years learning bushcraft and studying plants and edibles. He has even developed some of his own survival techniques and is a skilled hunter with both a bow and a slingshot.

    T
I have watched dozens of friction fire videos and this is my favorite. This is because he mentioned 1) Four woods for hearth boards, 2) That dry wood, but not to dry, is important for hearth boards, 3) Failure is a part of the learning process, 4) That different parts of the same hearth board can be good or bad for our purposes, 5) That a dry work surface is important and several things to use under all ones' tools, 6) Cutting wood away under the notch on the hearth board (First I heard of doing that) , 7) To put a moisture barrier under wet foot wear. Many other videos mention none of these things or but one or two.

Thanks Greg for sharing. I really enjoy your knowledge on plants. I’ve been working on knowing my plants in the past ten years, mostly the medical plants. Food plants is my weakness and needing to physical touch and test them myself. I have a friend that Thought he knew his mushrooms and made a bad call and ended up in the hospital over it. I’m not sure what he ate or even what though he was eating. He’s embarrassed of the or deal. Being cocky can get you in trouble quick. Knowing every detail of a plant is very important. So thanks for sharing your knowledge.
