I have watched survival tutorials and shows. And read manuals all my life and this is the best tutorial I have ever seen on this topic.. you think to cover important nuances that I imagine others simply don't think of .. very good I'm really digging your channel

Great video! I've been doing & teaching bowdrill since 92, and I still get a little thrill when an ember pops out.
I've been working through your tutorials and I realized something. You're like the Bob Ross of survival. So encouraging and inspiring.
Your demonstration is excellent . Good advice using the thumbnail test for the hearth wood and the limpet shell bearing block is epic . The Old ones carried a water proof skin bag with hearth wood , spindles , bow , cordage , birds nest materials , stone knives and drills . Mine is made from elk skin and waterproofed with bear fat . The bag works well for starting a fire on and can hold 4 liters of water .

The pelt in your excellent video is just the right size and the hair can be removed after soaking in water with hard wood ashes for a couple days . A stone hide scraper works great . ATB and thanks for your reply .

I went for a walk along the Clyde a few years ago with a friend and the instructor that ran the Bushcraft course I went on (Patrick McGlinchey, great bloke very talented) When we stopped for lunch Patrick made me light the fire using a bow drill.
First though, he made me stick my hands into a pond for a minute or so (It's worth pointing out it was late November, and the pond was frozen)
Just to prove it could be done.
Managed it.
I was very pleased with myself.
Tom, That is the best instruction that I have seen for friction fire with a bow. After watching your videos, I see that you are a great teacher. I also wave my tinder bundle in the air so that I do not get smoked out at the end before ignition.

It's been a point of pride with me for years that I never use paper to light a fire outside but I've always had to use a lighter or matches, this will be great to try.

Fire: when you don't need it, it's easy to make. When you really need it, it's very hard. So make sure you don't need it! LOL

Awesome video I love friction fire I practice bow drill and hand drill one thing I like to do is wet my spindle and board before my practice so if I got lost in the rain I would be able to get a ember

The astragal (talus bone) of a cervid works great to hold down the top of the spindle. I have several of white tail deer which are just the right size. From what I have gathered, the Native Americans would use such to start fires.

Another great spindle is horsetail as it acts like a sandpaper, although I believe it has to be dried. Great job on making this video as always!
You should try making a feather-stick tinder bundle. I used to use cedar bark, but now I really prefer the feather-stick tinder bundle for all my fire making
You could probably use that sycamore for hand drill
Just subscribed, Been watching Greg Ovens method of placing a log on top so you can do it single handed. ovens rocky mountain bushcraft is where I saw it. It's good to see some scottish bushcraft

I bought two Mora so I could stress test one of them. Batoned it through a cinder block and it had no edge damage at all. So now I just rotate between both knives
I've always wanted to start fire by friction, I wonder if I have the patience.
Nice work. I managed it once and struggled so much that I said I would never do it again.. But lately I have got the urge back. Also, I have those freet shoes too. Love them.
Hey Tom, old fellow. Very good explaining, right here. I hope you does'nt bother, bcs i think everyone wants to learn to get more effective . If you can afford the time, go to the Felix Immler RUclips channel, to a video with the name "the double bow drill technique ". I learned that method to get faster results.
What part of Scotland are you originally from, Tom? You sound quite highland..
Thanks for the extra details, hints and tips. The wood types to use have not been mentioned in other videos I have seen, which also tend to be from the other side of the pond (ones I have seen this is) so not100% applicable in Blighty. I shall give it a go. If it works I'll teach my 13yo son too.
If you really have to start a fire without matches or a butane lighter. A magnifying glass will do the trick in a fraction of the time provided there`s even the slightest bit of Sun.

In over 40 years I have never successfully made fire from a bow drill or hand drill. 😔 I’ll just stick with flint and steel. This old dog just can’t learn this trick. 🤪

He seems to use this skin for many purposes including sleeping. Doesn't seem like he is wasting the animal from my understanding.
