How Uncharted 3 Almost Killed the Franchise

  • For many the Uncharted Franchise is one of the best modern video game franchises on the market. With 5 installments, and an upcoming feature film it seems Uncharted has resonated with fans for over a decade. But at one point it seemed Uncharted was headed for major disappointment. The third installment, Uncharted 3 Drakes Deception almost sank the entire franchse, but why?

So did Resident Evil 6. At the time I think it was l(& probably still remains) the best selling game in the RE franchise, yet it's the most disliked of the main series by fans, the most forgettable, & Capcom went in a completely different direction afterwards

    • @mister-pinkman
      @mister-pinkman 2 года назад +11

@@ElSoloNoco RE5 is the best selling one, RE6 is second. RE4 skyrocketed the series into popularity and the hype was unreal for the next 2 games.
The fact is, uncharted 3 is widely considered one of the better games in the series. Most fans agree Uncharted 1 has not aged very well at all and is the weakest in the series. And, RE6 is widely considered the weakest in the RE series. It wasn’t a financial failure, but it killed the hype for the series until RE7 resurrected the franchise by once again reinventing itself while simultaneously going back to its horror roots.
Uncharted didn’t need resurrecting. There was just as much hype for uncharted 4 as 3, if not more - because of the positive reception of 3 (and the game just looked amazing in its marketing). In fact, a lot of fans like 3 more than 4, despite 4 being the best selling in the franchise.
Point is, yeah sales aren’t everything, but the reception of a game can dictate the financial success of its successor.

He really is exaggerating everything. People loved the game. Imo when people talk about uncharted 2 and 3 and which one they like it's usually more about the story they liked more since the games were pretty similar. It's a "if it's not broke don't fix it" type of approach.

The Uncharted trilogy knew exactly what it was doing with each games’ themes, environments, enemies, and McGuffins.
Not one game fell out of line from the overall vision of the saga.
Uncharted 1 - Where: South America jungles, Enemies: Erratic pirates
    Theme: CHAOS
This is why El Dorado was perfect as the McGuffin because it made people into horrifying monsters and CHAOTIC pirates with no class nor discipline were the perfect enemy to find it.
Uncharted 2 - Where: The wintry Himalayas, Enemies: Mercenaries
    Theme: STRENGTH
Lazarevic was the Bane to Nathan Drake’s Batman. The ultimate physical threat to prove who is pound for pound the strongest man.
This is why the Tree of Life was the perfect McGuffin because Lazarevic and his mercenaries wanted to maximize their STRENGTH.
Uncharted 3 - Where: The Rub ‘al Khali desert, Enemies: A covert secret order
    Theme: FEAR
Marlowe was the ultimate psychological enemy for Nate. That whole line she says, “I wonder what you’re really afraid of,” is alluding to Nate’s fear of losing Sully or Elena. Nate doesn’t fear dying as much as he fears losing the people closest to him.
We see this when he drank the water at the City of Ubar.
Marlowe and her agents were not the physical opponents that Lazarevic was. She knew she could not defeat Nate physically because he had already bested the very best physical opponents like Lazarevic.
But what Marlowe did know was how to break Nate’s spirit. And that’s attacking his heart: Sully.
That’s the whole point of why she toyed with Nate after they drugged him in Yemen. That’s why she made him worry about Sully and also question Sully’s loyalty.
The hallucinogen in the water of Iram is the perfect McGuffin for a psychological tormenter that Marlowe was.
She was the Scarecrow to Nate’s Batman.
If you were expecting Uncharted 3 to be like Uncharted 2, then you miss the point of each game’s themes. And you could be redundant in copying another enemy like Lazarevic who was the ultimate epitome of strength.
Each game should express new ideas. New themes. New environments.
Each game is akin to the themes from each movie of the Dark Knight Trilogy.
    FEAR, CHAOS, STRENGTH
And that’s reflected in each game’s enemies.
The pirates from the first game were chaotic. The mercenaries from the second game were brute force. The secret order in the third game was fear.

Really throws me off when the character acts completely different during the story segments ignoring this fact or even reacting horrified when he killed anyone in the cut scenes reacting like any real person would but it was completely odd since he had just killed multiple dozens of people before these events like it was nothing.

  • @Ivotas
    @Ivotas 2 года назад +12

I love all the Uncharted games but U3 definitely had some issues in the storytelling department that just threw me off. You could really tell that they had the set pieces figured out but actually haven't thought up more plausible ways to how or why they are happening in the first place. We have the awesome cruiseship sequence that actually started with the ships graveyard. Drake fights his ways through dozens of Ramses' men in order to free Sully only to find out that Ramses never had him and it was all a trick to capture Drake. That would all have been nice and well if we actually didn't start the ships graveyard by actually being Ramses' captive in the first place. So this entire ruse that cost Ramses a lot of his men was all just to capture a guy who he had captured in the beginning anyways. Insert Tony Stars "not a great plan" meme here please.
Same with the Talbot rooftop chase sequence. The sequence most likely was planned out but the story behind it makes zero sense at all. Drake is captured and sits at a table surrounded by Marlow, Talbot, Ramses and a number of henchmen. Then he brakes free and starts going after Talbot who suddenly runs away. WTF? Why doesn't he just stay there where his henchmen are? When we catch up to him he fights us one on one anyways.
Also the entire why is Talbot alive thing after being shot by Cutter gets no resolution. Cutter is surprised that Talbot is alive after he shot him and that's it. The scene made it seems that there's more to it but it just get's dropped off there.
Another thing was when they were looking for that spot in Syria only to randomly stumble over it when running away from the enemies. Convenient writing.
Also the McGuffin itself is a bit lackluster. In the previous games we have actually named things like El Dorado or the Cintamani Stone. But here it's just a vessel of brass. At least give it a friggin name to make it appear more mystic. Even you make a name up that does not exist in any old legend, story etc. in a fictional story that much freedom is allowed. Also at the same time what Marlowe and Talbot want to do with this McGuffin is a bit lackluster. Drake said that they already use fear on messing with peoples minds. So having poisoned a way to poison water to make people go crazy doesn't sound like much of an improvement of what they already have. Lazarevic had a private army. But he didn't have superhuman powers which is why he wanted the Cintamani Stone. Marlowe however has her own army and equipment and ways to play with people's minds. Poisened water doesn't seem like that much of a level up to what she already has compared to what a level up the Cintamani Stone was to Lazarevic.
That all aside, I really can't stress enough that I totally love the game. But that doesn't mean that I cannot critisize things that I thing could have been handled better. But considering the situation pointed out in this video I have to say that it's amazing that we still got that good of a game.

@@dylana.9057 The thing with a critical eye is not to forget to give a story a bit of leeway, especially if it's full of parts that entertain you. Those things I mentioned also only stuck out after I finished the story and starting thinking about it. Didn't make me hate the game though. It was rather a "well, that actually didn't make much sense" for a couple of situations. All it lead is ranking it lowest on the Uncharted games list. But still it was a blast to play and a worthy installment of the IP in terms of staying true to the characters and the adventure.

Uncharted 3 killed the franchise? Bro it's like one of the best games out there. The draw back in that game was that the pirate section seemed unnecessary because it felt like a darg for the story but other than that the game is actually pretty good.

It's funny because 3 was the root of many of the problems in 4. The focus on stealth, the overuse of puzzles and the existence of long and boring flashback sequences.
But UC3 has its moments. The naval chapters, the horse chase and the game tricking you by making you believe Sully died. Also the guns sound the best and Marlowe is a much more annoying villain than Rafe, Lazarevic and Navarro.
UC3 was the last Uncharted released before The Last of Us, which also makes it the last one free from Druckmann's increasing influence. That's why it needs to be cherished.

What a hyperbolic title. The game has a 92 metacritic score, it was a huge financial success for Sony and I know many people who consider it their favourite in the franchise. The script certainly could have been more airtight, but I felt it still explored the lengths in which Nathan was willing to go for legacy and putting his loved ones at risk before deciding to trade one ring for another. If anything, it perfectly sets up a lot of what 4 would go on to explore. I also really don't like how much you're implying that Neil Druckmann was the creative genius here over Amy Hennig or even Gordon Hunt (rest in peace) in those first two games, that's just simply false.

In my opinion, there are some things that get ignored regarding this game. I love how the story, apart from expanding Nate’s relationship with Sully, let’s us learn more about Nate’s relationships with Drake. we see he’s a kid off the streets (later learn his mother died and he was left at an orphanage), and despite his status he has Sir Francis, who he attributes his whole worth to. He’s obviously obsessed; when you read his journal during the flashback there are several pages of sketches of Drake, including his knighting and other moments. It’s at the end when Marlowe tells him to take the ring from her like Drake did the Queen, his illusion seems to break. From history, we can safely compare Marlowe to Elizabeth I, which makes Nate rethink. I’ve essentially run out of things to say, but I’ve kind of made my point.

U3 had awesome set pieces. Despite its story being lackluster, the thing that REALLY disappointed me about it (and to an extent U4)was its lack of a proper supernatural enemy element in the 3rd act. SPOILERS INCOMING!!!
U1 had Mayan decendants that mutated into nasty creatures due to exposure of a virus found in a carcass of their mummified alien "god-king".
U2 had Yeti monsters who really turned out to be disguised, super-powered natives that were guarding the entrance to the fabled lost city of Shangri La, which housed The Tree of Life: the source of the natives' power.
U3 just had flaming Ghost Rider skulls dudes which were just an illusion from exposure to poisoned water. So it does NOT count IMHO!
U4 had NO supernatural element. 😢

Let me clarify some things that were left out of this review, uncharted 3 has several ideas that were not well developed for a very specific reason, the president of naughty dog went to E3 and announced the release date a year before the game released and the development is still halfway through, which caused an absurd crunch and the involvement of many more devs to finish the project. Amy Henning, co-director, writer and creator of the series, has publicly expressed this in interviews, saying that the crunch was huge in this game, and her desire was precisely to make a fourth game in a completely different way, with a smaller team and a different development philosophy.
And you got it wrong, uncharted 4 would not be "safe" to build on the success of the third game, in fact it would be bold, with Nathan not using firearms for much of the game and focusing only on melee combat, because Amy wanted to demonstrate that Drake was no longer the adventurer of years ago because he would be married to Elena, in addition, she wanted to explore Drake's mind more and his fixation on treasures, making the character "Sam", his brother, a mirror darker than it could have been, something that Uncharted 3 tried to do but only scratched the surface due to short development time.
I love uncharted 4, but I feel it lacks Amy Hennig's "pulp" and animated adventure layer in it, it's like Steven Spielberg didn't direct an Indiana Jones movie (as it happens now with Dial of the Destiny).

There's actually a lot of development issues the video didn't get to go into. For example, Charlie Cutter was supposed to be present in the story from beginning to end, but his actor Graham McTavish got a part in the hobbit movies so he had to leave production. Thats why the plot can feel a bit disjointed, as if the game has a set of characters for one half and then another for the next. It's really fascinating in my opinion. Honestly, everytime Naughty Dog delays a game, I dont mind it because they really put themselves through hell to get Uncharted 3 out by the initial November 1, 2011 release date where everything was constantly against them

Stupid Sony rushed them to meet the release date deadline, as well as splitting the team was a big mistake for Uncharted 3. Was still a great game with the amount of time they had to develop. This is why the creator of Uncharted, Amy Hennig was fired because Neil Druckmann was so revered for The Last of Us after it came out (which he had way more time to make and a more sizeable team to develop) and since Uncharted 3 was the "low point" in the series. His "vision" for Uncharted 4 differed from her's, because Uncharted 4 originally wasn't going to be the last game in the series and involve characters from Uncharted 3 as well as Nate's brother being more of a villain character, they also went back to being a single team for their games. So they scrapped that original idea. It's pretty sad that Amy's vision and basically her whole creation was stripped from her due to this, which is pretty unfair and kinda douchey from ND higher-ups.

Don't get me wrong there were some moments I really liked in Uncharted 4, but there were a lot more moments that I just found boring compared to the previous two. And I also felt 4 was a big departure from the formula they had set up in 2 and 3, and while some people may have appreciated the more serious tone, I really enjoyed the Spielberg-type story they told in 2 and 3. I also really didn't like Nathan's brother because he just felt shoe-horned in and I hated the marriage drama between Nathan and Elena. I would say the only interesting part about the story was how everyone throughout history died trying to find the treasure on the boat and it was never worth it for anyone, but we literally went from fighting yeti's in 2 and super bombastic monsters in 3 to this grounded story about gold. There is honestly a lot more I could say about the story and gameplay but at the end of the day they just felt like a huge departure from the previous 2 and I didn't get anything out of it. To be fair I'm actually not a big fan of the first one either and while that one didn't have a bad story or tone, I really fell kind of flat with the gameplay for me as well.

"Uncharted" games needs to be 2 different & separate story timelines. I'm only focusing on the 5 games (UDF-LL. & their stories, characters, etc.
Timeline 1: (Amy Hennig, etc.) "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" & its direct sequel "Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception." "Uncharted: Golden Abyss" (PSVita) also yellow color title but not considered canon. Different, softer tone, yellow color titles, "Drake" in the titles, bright colors used, charm, heart & soul, characters are older, wiser, aware, better chemistry between them, better story & dialogue, more innocent. Classical, action-adventure, Indiana Jones and The Mummy/The Mummy Returns style. Nate has no brother or daughter. His ring is destroyed. There is a wide unexplained gap in between UDF and U2 which doesn't explain why or how Nate & Elena don't end up together after the events of UDF & instead U2 has Nate and Chloe in a relationship with no buildup. Nate & Chloe's past relationship & characters in U2 is never mentioned in U3. Chloe & Charlie Cutter only seem to be working with Nate & Sully for the last 4 years between UDF & U3. U2 is not a direct sequel to UDF. Sometime after the events in UDF, Nate and Elena were married but became estranged & they were separated. Nate thought he had lost his wedding ring but Sully secretly held onto it. Nate tells Elena she is still wearing her ring & she tells Nate that "it helps in this part of the world." Elena kept her ring on because she still loves Nate & doesn't want the marriage to be over. Nate and Sully have a father-son like relationship. Younger Nate in U3 looks nothing like U4 younger Nate. Katherine Marlowe never mentioned a brother in U3 in her files. Nate doesn't mention having a brother in a Panamanian jail in UDF. Nathan has different friends/former friends/teammates, etc. in 1 & 3 than in 2 & 4. U3 ignores U2 story. Nate tells Elena at the airport in U3 that he almost lost her before. He isn't referring to U2. He means the helicopter crash in UDF. He almost lost her twice in both timelines. Chloe is willing to help an injured Charlie Cutter and helps the team carry him to the bus. She tells Nate that the mission is too dangerous, "no I mean the whole thing," "not worth it, and to "let this one go." This is contrary to her attitude in U2 or U:LL. Nate and Elena don't, but come close to directly kissing each other in UDF & U3. The major focus in UDF & U3DD is Nate's ring, saving Sully & or Elena & stopping diabolical warlords from using biological weapons like with Atoq Navarro & Talbot & Katherine Marlowe. Villain/Villains's motivations in UDF & U3DD is more dangerous because the villains in these games can use or sell their biological weapons to anyone & use them against a whole city or country. Atoq Navarro plans to sell his to the right buyer. Katherine Marlowe & Talbot can use their weapon to brainwash or mind control entire cities or nations. Atoq Navarro, Katherine Marlowe, & Talbot want to control others. Some small homages, callbacks, or references to the other timeline. The movie "Sliding Doors" timeline comes to mind.
Timeline 2: (Bruce Straley & Neil Druckmann, etc.) "Uncharted 2: Among Thieves," "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End," & "Uncharted: Lost Legacy." Orange & Red colors in titles, "Thieves" or "Thief" in titles. Dark tones, dark filter, dark story, militaristic style, red star Soviet rhino tanks and trucks used in U2, characters drink, weaker stories, binoculars are used more frequently, both are more modernized, characters are de-aged/younger, more cliché, some characters are naive, irrational, annoying, radical, etc. Rhino tanks are featured more in U2, U4, etc. than in U1 & U3. Nate has a brother and daughter. Nate and Sully have no father-son like relationship. Nate's ring is not destroyed because Cassie finds it in her parents belongings in U4. Nate and Elena directly kiss each other in U2 & U4. The major focus in U2 is Chloe & Nate's relationship, Chloe's betrayal, The Dagger, Tibet, Shambala, The Resin, & Zoran Lazarovech. Sully makes only a small appearance in U2. The focus in U4 is on Nate and his brother Sam, Nadine Ross, & Rafe Adler. The villain's motivations in U2 & U4 is to become invincible, indestructible, or out of competition, revenge, jealousy, self-serving interests, clichéd reasons (scream 3 with the whiny jealous revengeful brother). Zoran Lazarovech & Rafe Adler want to be the only invincible, indestructible, powerful ones on top with self-serving interests that only benefit them. There are small homages, callbacks, or references to the other timeline in some of these games. U2 & U4 are reboot/remakes or alternative 2nd timeline to UDF & U3.
In UDF to Uncharted 4, Nate and Elena end up together at the end.
In the behind the scenes, the naughty dog team said that Uncharted 3 is "the game they always wanted to make" & "this time they had more time to work on it." And it shows: In "Uncharted 2: Among Thieves" & "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End" which both have only plot & no real good story for the characters & both seem thrown together with no emotion between dialogue & characters. scenes or dialogue feels contrived or unrealistic.
"Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" & Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception" was peak "Uncharted" for me and U3DD ended the story better for me. The 2 games are more fun because they are harder to play which makes them more challenging, which I love. "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" & "Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception" get a lot of hate for the wrong reasons. UDF came too early in the lifespan of the PS3 & U3DD received about the same fate as "Donkey Kong Country: Dixie's Double Trouble" Super Nintendo: it was too late in the lifespan of the PS3. U3DD got massively overshadowed by "The Last of Us." But if you replay UDF & U3DD & the cutscenes on the PS3 console many times you might change your mind about them. U3DD has upgraded Nate's character massively from UDF & U2 IMO. He can now aim & fire weapons while swimming, something you can't do in the other previous games. He has the grenade throwback function in U3DD that none of the other games have. This allows Nate to better protect himself from grenade attacks. The games make more sense if it has 2 timelines. Whichever timeline people prefer is fine by me.

The lay out of the video is so good but personally miss Tyler bro…they way he made the videos made it feel relatable with high production docs but this feels more like a IGN type group video ( obviously with out the terrible writing like IGN)

For me it's due to the story. When they moved away from the supernatural and started going with "more realistic".

@@schemar17 Same with 3. The urn that supposedly housed the "Djinn" was making everyone trip balls but you never actually see or fight it. It's left up to interpretation as to if there's a djinn at all. There was also the Ps Vita game. Radioactive gold was the culprit.

The supernatural element were always the weakest part of the games dont know why you'd miss them. But the shift 3 went for was noticeably bad, 4 handled it much better

@@ThirstyTOAD I enjoyed the supernatural aspect. Gave it an Indiana Jones vibe. The "realistic" direction was boring. UC 3? Drake and friends try acid. UC 4? Pirates of the Pyramid Scheme.
Honestly, that's more boring than cursed sarcophagus makes people into monsters or Jason Statham cosplay finds the tree of life and immortality...immediately regrets his decision.

I thoroughly enjoyed U3, it pushed the limits of the PS3 and some chapters were great, such as the plane one, which came in the movie recently. U2 was one which I didn't enjoyed, but it was good nonetheless.

It’s good to know what went on in development and it makes things a bit clear as to why there isn’t all that much going on and feels a bit smaller than 2. I feel like 1 & 2 have laid down enough for me to overlook any reason to out-do them and at this point it’s best to focus on our beloved main characters relationship progression and retain the atmosphere, mood, and chemistry. I think they did great by focusing on them in order to setup for 4. The way I see it- 1 was to get us hooked and let ND know if we’re ready for the best #2, then 3 is like a 2.5, and 4 is the finale.
