Nice job being the step parent for these two robins and particularly the last one. I had a baby robin that had fallen out of a tree, and my mother tried to put it back but the nest was empty and it too had barely anymore protection. So I took him in and raised the bird. By the end of 23 days, he flew off with his own kind. You know, that bird came back the following spring. It was chirping outside my door of the back porch. It flew up on my arm and up to my face. It was like telling me thank you for saving my life and now I want you to meet my wife! She was pretty, with a beautiful speckled chest. She did not come near me, but he did. That was the last time I saw him, that was many many years ago. So you did a wonderful kindness by raising and like any parent, it was time to leave the nest.

That is awesome, mine always come back a time or too, but then leave for good... I always wonder if they are still out there, or fell victim to the hundreds of dangers out there for birds... cats, dogs, racoons, cars, people, etc.
Always a wonderful thing to experience though, while we have a moment with them. :-)

This was so touching. Thanks to you Mike, I was able to raise a nestling as you did. He did not come back today for the first time. I feel a bit heart broken at the thought something bad happened as he always came back in the morning for food but at the same time I hope he is alive and being a free bird. He was able to find and eat insects at this point. I could not have done this without your educational videos. Thank you Mike.

I'd love to be able to say that I rescued birds like you. What I will say is that I live just north of Bridgeport and for the first time in over 25 years, I got my first pair of nesting Eastern Bluebirds in one of my nest boxes! I was able to watch as the male made his appearance in late April and sang well enough to get a lady to check out the box. Everything met her approval and within a short time, I observed her bringing material into box for her nest. On May 15th I noticed the first fecal pouch being taken away!! We had babies!! My neighbors had marauding raccoons getting into things and I was terrified they would find the nest. Luckily, in just under 3 weeks I counted 3 fledglings. I cleaned out the old nest and am watching the adults continuing to feed babies all around the area. Today, I hear the male singing again nearby. I hope he can convince her to join him again at another go-round! Wish us luck! I love Robin song more than anyone else I know. But there's something special about that super soft bluebird vocals. A brisk breeze overpowers the sound of it. It makes me wonder if maybe ive heard it all along all these years and just wasn't aware. It's easy to overlook when Jay's, Robin's, Cardinals, Starlings, Mockingbirds and House Sparrows are about. It's so nice to find your channel. I subbed. Can't wait to see what you'll rescue in future.

Yes, not sure what happened to these robins. As we saw in parts two and three, one robin flew away immediately, never to return, even while his brother hung around for hours with me in the yard, and I continued to feed him. For the next few days, I would take the other robin outside, until he also flew off for good, yet still returned frequently to eat. At the end of part six, he just never came back, not sure if he got sick, got eaten by a cat, or flew off to be a bird. We obviously hope for the best that he flew off to be a bird.

I don't think he got sick. He looks to happy and heathy in that last few pics. I think when Robins mature they just go off to find new territories. One black bird we raised from a tiny chick stayed around for about 5 months then he just vanished had not seen him for a good few months then in the winter time he came back. Thing is he remembered the shed table where we used to feed him. You never know the Robin you raised might come back. I think he is ok though, You done an awesome job, Really enjoyed your vids

This robin got the best possible start at life because of you. It's not easy being a robin, and he relied on you to be his surrogate parent, and you pulled through and gave him plenty of time to learn how to be a bird. Don't feel bad about how much time he was spending on the ground; it wasn't because you were on the ground.

Found a baby robin on my front sidewalk with no parents around. He couldn't fly. I called the county animal welfare. They asked if he had feathers, and I told them yes. They said he should be good and just to leave him alone. That's what I did, but if I had seen your video maybe I would have helped him out a bit more. Hope he was ok. Thanks for showing such caring for nature.

Robin Rescue Part Seven: I considered making a part seven, but the only footage I had, was the broken up nest, in pieces on my lawn. That was one windy season, and that nest finally completely fell from very high up, breaking on the way down... I never saw any parent birds in this case, not sure if something happened to them, or why there was no parent feeding them. If there was any parental assistance, I'd never have taken these birds in. But knowing what happens to my area at night (cats, raccoons, skunks, and possums wander and forage freely----these babys would have been a meal that very first night), I had to take them in to protect them. On the next morning, I put them in a basket in the tree, but it was ignored all day, no other birds.
So there you have it, and thanks for you comments!! I love seeing the great work you all try to do saving birds.
REMEMBER: job one, is to put it back in the nest!! No one can raise the bird better than the parent bird.
I never take a bird if there is a viable nest, or any way for the parent to feed it. Honestly, it is best to stay out of it, and let the parents do the work.
I only intervene, when there is no nest, no parent, or if there is immediate urgent need to save the bird's life. Knowing when to help, and when NOT to help, is the hard decision we all make.
    Great vibes everyone, fly on!
I can only help birds when my time allows, and my time only allows, when the bills are paid... :-(
So if anyone has the means to help, consider donating to my campaign:

Should you take care of baby birds when the nest is too low on the ground and fallen? I put a few baby birds back in the nest and they were all gone the next time I checked and assume a creature took them; this time the nest in worse condition than the first.

He's a full grown fledgling now, but his tail feathers are not as long as the bird in your video #6. I have a few more days before he can start hunting and feeding himself. The Thing is I would not have known any of the right things to do if not for the information contained in your videos! My bird may or may not live long on its own, but YOU allowed me to give him a good chance to thrive!

Great presentation, very helpful. The best information I had from your presentation was to feed high protein "kitten food", moist, when young & throughout. Do not feed milk for those reading my comments. I gave some water through a dropper when she was old enough to fly inside the house. Our Robin, we called Tweety, flew away today to spend her first night in the wild. Before flying, she had a healthy meal of kitten food from my wife's hand. BTW, i think your birdy is a female as she has light colored chest, like mine.

Thank you so much for filming little birdies ! More people like you and there would be no war in this world ! Seriously; yesterday I also found little baby robin. It had a broken wing .. I didn't know what to do.. but his mom was around . I put him near the hedge and she came at once and started feeding him. On the next day I found him on the meadow , sitting on something like part of broken nest or something.. his mom was around! I made a nest out of two styrofoam cups and put it in an open cardboard box. I tried to take it on my balcony but I think his mom was to shy to come so close.. so I left it on the meadow.. of course this is not enough protection against cats and other predators.. but at least... Something...

This is an outstanding series of videos. The direction, editing and the stills are all first class, and you speak really clearly. Well done! And, it isn't maudlin or syrupy. Five stars.

Thanks Tommy, I tried to walk that fine line about documenting it, with information, having fun with the birds, while also trying to do right by them... and not be corny. Thanks for appreciating this. Ironically enough, so many people have told me I should teach about animals at schools, or work with animals in a laboratory, but I dont have enough schooling for either--- not even enough to get an interview. What a world.

I never did any further Robin Rescue video, because they stopped coming around altogether. It was fun while it lasted, but like the lion in Born Free, they stopped being tame, one sooner than the other. A week or so after part six, the original nest fell out of the tree altogether. It was a windy season, and I think the nest was not secured properly to begin with, which is why I found them two days apart in the first place. I did film that nest on the ground, but since there were no more birds returning, I never made anything with that footage...

Do you think he ever came back to your yard? Even an inkling that one of your birds returned even if they didn't interact with you as they did when they were babies?

The slow motion speed give us a worm's eye view of the robin. They see robins, not as cute birdies, but as ruthless predators who tear them apart and devour them.

He, is a ,She. That`s her territory, soon you`ll find out, when she builds a nest, around the area. Film it.
    Love the vids.

I'm wondering if the baby birds learn to be cautious from the parent bird's training. This bird might not have developed a healthy respect for dangerous territory or for predators. Thanks for the video.

No birdbath? Even a deep dish would've served. A sprinkler to bring up worms to eat by herself, perhaps augmented by the mealworms? Let them fly free only after the nestlings have fledged. Live & learn. Glad the one made it.
