  • 2016 Ford Explorer 3.5 136,000 miles. Issues with “Service charging system now” notification on. It would come on only intermittently. Changed the battery and checked connections to the alternator. Finally tracked down the wires that had been bite by a mouse most likely. Hope this helps those of you in similar situation.

So I’ve seen this several times now, where the alternator isn’t actually bad but the shops or dealers will have you believe that’s the problem, then the issue comes back again. The fuse box itself has a large metal fuse that cannot be replaced, that is the issue where you have to actually replace the whole fuse box, and you may experience the same intermittent issues.. the large 2 wires come in and connect to that metal piece on the fuse box, and this runs through the fuse box and connects to other fuses

The connection to the alternator is where your problem is...take it off and clean it cause there's alot of current that comes from there. Clean it good and make sure it's firmly in there tight.

Thank you it ended up being the voltage regulator was intermittently working. Due to the vehicle gets driven often I bought a new alternator and went on. I appreciate the insight though.

@@cristiancortez43 I hate to hear this it sounds like it is a wiring issue, if your battery is good and doesn’t have a bad cell and the alternator has been changed my guess would be in the wiring harness or possibly a belt issue of being loose but I would think the belt would slip off.

@@masterofnone729 it actually was the wiring harness. Changed that out and the issue was solved 🙏🏼👌🏼

I would guess your voltage regulator on the alternator is intermittently working. You could take it off to test but a lot of times it will test fine but there are some old school mechanics that can put it on their machine and the needle will barely jump kinda like having your Blood pressure taken it will almost tick a bit. Let me know what it ends up being but I would say the alternator needs replaced.

Just got this problem as well. Comes and goes and the alert is loud and makes my wife have anxiety. Did you have to replace the entire alternator or just the faulty part?

@@masterofnone729 yeah mine shut of the instrument cluster display even after replacing the faulty alternator. I was hesitating to do it until I had proof when I read below voltage that was consistent under a load. My problem was that didn’t solve the issue. I believe that there was a problem with the batter charging sensors but was unable to find any data and sent them to the dealer
