- Sure, here are some DIY tips on laying porcelain tiles:
1. Prepare the surface: Before you start laying porcelain tiles, you need to prepare the surface. This involves removing any old tiles, cleaning the surface, and leveling the floor. Use a level to ensure that the surface is even and flat.
2. Measure and plan: Measure the area where you want to lay the porcelain tiles and plan the layout. This will help you determine the amount of materials you need and ensure that your tiles are the right size and shape.
3. Mix the mortar: Mix the mortar according to the manufacturer's instructions. Use a trowel to spread the mortar evenly over the surface, making sure to cover the entire area.
4. Lay the tiles: Start at one corner and work your way out, laying each tile in a straight line. Use spacers to ensure that the tiles are evenly spaced and aligned. Use a level to ensure that each tile is even and flat.
5. Cut the tiles: Depending on the shape of your surface, you may need to cut some of the tiles to fit. Use a tile cutter or a wet saw to make precise cuts, and wear protective gear to avoid injury.
6. Grout the tiles: Once the tiles are laid, you need to grout the gaps between them. Mix the grout according to the manufacturer's instructions and use a grout float to spread it evenly over the surface. Use a damp sponge to wipe away any excess grout.
7. Seal the tiles: Finally, seal the tiles to protect them from stains and damage. Use a sealant that is specifically designed for porcelain tiles and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Remember, laying porcelain tiles can be a challenging and time-consuming project, so don't be afraid to ask for help or hire a professional if you need it. With the right materials and techniques, you can create a beautiful and functional surface that you'll enjoy for years to come. - Хобби
Personally I use a lot Wetter mix , that dry mix looks to have too many voids , and I always have a lean mix base as type 1 has movement which is why is used for block paving
I have since then started using a wetter mix also because of all the reasons you mentioned 👍🏴
Great demonstration, this has given me the information to lay patio.
Cheers for posting.
Just put another one up on my channel that might help a bit more 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping Cheers mate.
My patio finished hight will be just under dpc, is that okay?
Thanks
bigmac 1 better than higher 👍🏴 should be good to go
@@tidybrickslandscaping Nice 1 mate, going to take my time & follow your instructions.
Thanks again!
bigmac 1 maybe try these clips out. ruclips.net/video/SN2_tZVIs-4/видео.html
Thank you kind sir
Here’s a new one with a bit extra ruclips.net/video/SN2_tZVIs-4/видео.html
I was told when using porcelain tiles I'd need to use flexible adhesive on top of concrete bed?
A flexible adhesive is more commonly used in stone 👍🏴 water cannot penetrate through the concrete also
Best way to do porcelain tile ?? Make screed first and laying tiles on good adhesive.. don't forget about good grout as well 😉
My next porcelain patio I’m starting Monday I think I’m going to lay a screed for that one 👍🏴
Hi what adhesive or mix would u use to lay porcelain tiles onto outside concrete
Thanks
4/1 sharp sand mix 👍🏴
Do you ever apply a primer or slurry between the sub base and the mortar bed? Or do you put SBR in your mortar mix?
No sbr and no I didn’t primer the base I only prime concrete base 👍🏴
When laying frame slabs, how do you join them to the wall? Do you put a silicone bead to stop water getting down between the tile and the wall?
No I use the Marshalls primer to stick them 👍🏴
Have you laid 16mm thick porcelain for a patio before the ones I like only come in 16mm
Go for it 👍🏴
Can’t seem to find much info anywhere on these for a driveway I have put a base in at 200mm thick type one compacted and driven on for around 6 months what I can’t work out is should I lay with a 60mm concrete mix plus 20mm tile or would a sharp sand mix be enough and would it need rebar in
I’ve got so,e info for you then Marshalls are bringing out a 30mm porcelain tile for driveways 👍🏴.
Try this video of it I maybe went over the top on the prep though best be sure though cost a lot to rip it up 👍🏴ruclips.net/video/4HucqCZKV6o/видео.html
Where do you get the 5mm spin on spacers for the porcelain slabs? Thanks.
Pretty much any DIY type store 👍🏴
Hi love your channel I want to lay slabs at the back of my garden so the trampoline can sit on can I use building sand and cement mix
You could use building sand but my preference would always be sharp sand 👍🏴
do you ever do 2ft by 3ft poceline
I just send 2x4ft porcelain tiles here on this video 👍🏴
ruclips.net/video/EqFwlC4GIkQ/видео.html
Can I use that method on 300x300cm ceramic tiles?
Certainly and size same method 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping my mistake :), I mean 30x30x9cm
We installed porcelain tiles in my home and now floor tiles are coming pop up and when we get out pop up tiles from floor , we find it d shape. Please help me if you have any solution to get rid of this trouble?
Not quite sure what you mean by D shape
Tiles have bent from corners in upward direction.
Hi thanks for the great video. Just wanted to check the sand and cement mix wont crack? Should I add rebar rods when I do something similar or its not required?
If you live in the UK then all you need is a hard-core base as it seems USA and others like to lay on concrete which is a bit excessive it’s only taking foot traffic after all 👍🏴
Can I ask do you put your frame slabs in first ? , looks lovely btw :)
No I lay the border tiles as I girl to guarantee perfect size joints at the end 👍🏴
Great video and job does anyone have any experience laying with packs of 295mm x 295mm, 295mm x 600mm, 600mm x 600mm, and 900mm x 600mm, and getting the right joint widths?
All joints are either 5mm or 10mm depends on materials 5mm for porcelain 10mm for stone 👍🏴
Ive got a similar situation, but they seem to be more imperial sized. I've worked out that it needs a 1/4" spacer which is 6.3mm. So I'm going to use 6mm spacrers, which seem to work when laying them out dry to check...
What spacers do you use for Indian stone paving?? Thanks
10mm normally definitely wouldn’t go smaller than that because natural stone differs in size so 10 is safe enough 👍🏴
Did you lay the concrete on soil then you put the tiles
Didn’t lay concrete just 100mm type 1 hardcore compacted every 50mm 👍🏴
Hi Tidybricks Landscaping. What mortar mix proportions do you use and what is the water content please?
The cement bag should give you ratios on it.
mastercrete cement I use is a 5\1 ratio so in my mixer I use 2.5\.5 then that’s a wheel barrow load. Add water slowly and try judge it sometimes sand might already be wet so might not need any water.
You’ll get used to it 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping thanks a lot much appreciated :)
Omar Caruana no worries I’m here to help
whats your mix ratio please
4 sharp sand 1 cement wet mix 👍🏴
When laying large 600x900 20mm porcelain slabs on scalpings do I need to add expansion joints even if I am using a flexible grout and leaving a small gravel border around the edge.
Absolutely no need for any expansion joints maybe you might need them if it was laid on a concrete slab but not on a flexible bed no you’re good to go 👍🏴
Hi, do you put any sbr in your mix if so how much?
Never use SBR in the mix just a little squirt fairy liquid 👍🏴
Not for me. I'll stick with a wet mix.
years have gone by since and now I prefer a wetter mix 👍🏴
What size spacers do you use between the tiles?
5mm spacers I use a lot these day. I find 10mm to big tight is right I say 👍🏴
what depth of cement mix would be best to lay the slabs on to thanks?
30/40mm cement mix hope that helps 👍🏴
Dont forget to prime too
Tidybricks Landscaping cheers mate, also what sub base would you recommend?
Ethan Carr type 1 MOT 100mm 50mm compacted at a time
Tidybricks Landscaping Dolomite?
You American ? Just google dolemite it’s a mineral/rock. Might be the equivalent not sure but basically hardcore stones ranging from 1 inch to less plus dust. Hope that helps 👍🏴
Could I lay above concrete?
Sure nothing wrong with that that’s fine 👍🏴
Good video 👍
What fall would you normally use for a porcelain tile? 1:60 or 1:80?
The fall I normally go for is 1;100 but 1;80 is also fine 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping
Thank you. Think I'll go 1:100.
I find your videos informative - keep up the good work 👍
Btw - how do you feel about pedestals for 20mm porcelain? Any experience with them?
Rehan not found the right job yet for the pedestals but I’d definitely give it a go 👌
What's that mixture made of?
4 sharp sand 1 cement semi dry mix 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping thank you! 😊
What is the product you used to grout the tiles
The best answer I can give you. ruclips.net/video/aVc7uM4Z8wE/видео.html
@@tidybrickslandscaping thanks how long do you think it would take to lay 25 m2 of porcelin slabs. All the prep work done just laying. Someone else mixing
jtimmy85 1 or 2 days depending on the layout
Sorry pal I didn't here that good job then well done 👍👌where's your knee pads lol 😂😂😂😂😂
Sky engineer left his kneepads last year so I’m now using those happy days freebie 👍🏴
Watch out for cement burns on those knees
Yep you nailed that one one day I’ll get pads fingers crossed 🤞
Im not a builder just a general diy, er... And after i did some pointing up i used my fingers sometimes just to smooth out the joints... What a big mistake that was, i got cement burns and my god was they painful... Lesson learnt lol
@@billybodgit6281 ooh yeh not a good idea that you can get dermatitis that way. A spoon would of been better 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping ended up making 2 tools from work using 16mm and 12mm stainless Steel pipe, cut and shaped with a handle (two sizes because my house is old and the joints vary) worked a treat, and due to covid-19 it gave me something to do lol...
@@billybodgit6281 got to keep busy boredom sucks 👍🏴
Hi, could I ask you what the ratio sand to cement you used here please?
4/1 Barry and I have a little squirt of fairy too to help it move better with the trowel
@@tidybrickslandscaping many thanks, like the FL trick
Fairy liquid shouldn't be used, it weakens mortar, a good motar plasiciser should be used such as Feb mix or optimix for example . I'm sorry to say this is fairly basic knowledge that a professional should know.
Henry Waterhouse I’ve been using fairy liquid in my mixes for about 35 years and walls pillars I built all that time ago when I was a apprentice are still standing strong so I’d disagree
@@tidybrickslandscaping disagreement is fine, some just carry-on from what is taught from young, it is fact that it shouldn't be used and is not advised by any cement manufacturers. Always best looking at the technical info on a product you use, which you clearly do with your paving.
Porcelain is not a porous material. So it should not be installed with cement .
You had to use adhesive instead
With this product 22mm should be laid on a cement base. It’s a external tile 👍🏴
Christopher Andrews google it Mr know it all then you can apologise 😇
All porcelain paving should be laid using an SBR primer. Wether internal or external, it’s reduces the risk of De-lamination. This is a basic requirement. Do not be fooled by the textured exterior of the paving in believing this gives a bonding key.
@@mattreilly2113
Bonding to non porous porcelain is not functional at all.
Tile adhesive is the perfect choice by the manufacturer
matt Reilly 2:22 shows a cement type based primer not the SBR type ruclips.net/video/tdKZ4eyo5nE/видео.html
I came here from tiktok lol
How come was my work on there ? 👍🏴
Hi Good work are you anywhere near Coventry and still working if you are can you come and give me estimate on my job
Go online and type in local marshals installer and then enter postcode for closest Marshalls landscaper 👍🏴
SBR backs ?
No a Marshalls tile primer works so well sbr is becoming a thing of the past.
@@tidybrickslandscaping do any of you guys in the uk not just back butter the tile with a decent tile adhesive instead?
Marvell Tile and Stone I am doing a landscaping work shop in college and they are now saying to do so but you didn’t have to
I make up a slurry using sbr and cement, mixed with water and apply to the backs of all my paving and copings. Add a bit of sbr to bedding mix also helps with setting time.
Can you lay porcelain tiles with tile adhesive if the base is concrete ??
Yeh you can I almost went down that route but decided against but yes you can. Contact this company ask the question to get the best answer www.mapei.com/gb/en/about-us/mapei-in-uk
Hi, would you be able to come and do some work for me on my house?

What know primer mate 😕😢😜
Pre primed as I said in it
Wow Disneyland in the making lmao that shit won’t fly in California
So why wouldn’t that shit fly in Cali what’s wrong with it I’m interested in your view
Well first In Cali u have to pour concrete slab with concrete wire or rebar to prevent cracking and separation with time the way ur doing it well crack and separate from each other also sorry for the shit won’t fly totally unprofessional of me
Martin Flores this is the way we do it over here Martin each country is different I guess 👍🏴
