Man, just like in Welcome to the Jungle, he looks like he's about 18 years old in this video. I never realized just how beautiful of a boy he looks like! I mean, he looks like a beautiful teenager - - not a grown man. I guess he is a prodigy, If he can be this musically genius at such an young age. This video is so iconic for a variety of reasons. 1) it was their first ballad 2) one of the most famous guitar rifts of all time 3) it was the last time the band got along 100%. Slash grew resentful of this riff, added in drugs, fame, and Axl's personality quirks and well it was like a nuclear bomb about to go off. the fact he and Slash made it Use Your Illusions 1&2 is a miracle honestly. it also drove the producer/director of this video to leave the business of doing that kind of thing because of how bad it was as far as experiences go.
We had it at my high school in the 80's but I never signed up for it, as I learned all that stuff at home. My dad was a carpenter for 20 years and then a millwright for another 20 years.

Appetite For Destruction is on my top ten albums of all time,every song is good!Also the one breakdown where they start saying "Where Do We Go Now" Axle really started asking that question because he didn`t have anything else to sing and they decided to keep it in and continue with that,lol,classic!
I met them before I ever got to see them play. They opened for INXS at Texas Stadium in Dallas, and I missed it because I was on the air. After my shift, I went to the show, and backstage their manager made Axl do his “slither” dance move for me. Poor guy. His GF then came in and, yelling, drug him out of the room by his ear. 😳. I then met Slash. We hit it off and stayed in contact for many years. Still see him every now and then, but love GnR. Means little, but it's still history. Axl didn't really originate his "Slither" moves, but he did indeed make it famous. The fact is that Axl borrowed/stole the snake-dance moves from Richard Black of Shark Island, and everyone in Hollywood at the time knew it. Shark Island was massive around town in the mid-eighties and Black's snakedance was legend. There’s an alternative version of this video. It’s what my friends, my wife, and I remember from back then. Most don’t remember it until I mention the changes, then they all remember it too. To begin with, at the beginning there was one of those “clacker” things that mark movie scenes with. Then you hear a few beeps marking time on tape. Then Slash walks up close to the camera and you end up just seeing the bottom of his Les Paul where the controls and cable jack are. He plugs in and you hear a brief bit of static and a pop as he does so. Then they start playing. They actually the REAL beginning sequence which has much more to it before the singing over this version. Then it’s pretty much the same till then end. At the end, there’s a note on Slash’s guitar that you hear dipping down a bit flat and then it comes back in tune. On a typical Les Paul, like Slash is playing, you can’t do it the easy way because it does not have a tremolo (whammy bar) on it. This leaves two options. One is to grab the tuner for that string, loosen it and then tighten it back to pitch. But you run the risk of not getting back perfectly in tune quick enough. Instead Slash does it the “hard” way or the “bad” way, as it’s not the best thing to do to a guitar. He puts his right hand on the body up by the switch pushing in towards his body. Then, he takes his left hand and puts behind the headstock at the end of the neck. He then pushes out on the headstock from behind. This bends the wood and truss rod, lessens the tension on the string causing the lower note, then he stops pushing and the guitar goes back in tune. I, personally, think they stopped playing that version because people were probably breaking headstocks, breaking the glue bond between the fret board and the neck, and probably warping necks in general. I’d imagine the guitar manufacturer (Gibson) asked them to change it because of the amount of work it caused them. On a Les Paul, ruining a neck is pretty much destructive to the guitar. That’s because Gibson only does glued in necks using a tenon joint system in the wood that goes under the top of the guitars body. So, the replace the neck you have to pretty much destroy the guitar. Most other manufacturers choose to screw / bolt their necks on for this reason. But, doing that causes those guitars to have way less resonance and sustain, which is what Gibson’s, especially Les Paul’s and 335’s are known for. If sure that’s way more guitar knowledge than most people want, but I figured I’d add why it’s bad to do, especially to that beautiful Les Paul Slash is killing in the video. Funny thing too, real quick. Slash is known for playing Gibson Les Paul’s, we all know that or at least, that is the right guitar for him. But, when they were a young band and still recording Appetite for Destruction, Slash didn’t own, or use a Les Paul! He owned a BC Rich, you can see old pictures of him playing an older red BC Rich on stage (there’s actually an image of him doing this inside the original Appetite liner). But what he used as him number 1 guitar, the one that recorded almost all of his work on Appetite, was a much cheaper Japanese made Les Paul clone! Also, Steven “Popcorn” Adler is/was a phenomenal feel style drummer. The rhythm guitar player, Izzy Stradlin, wrote a huge portion of there music. He’s very under appreciated in my opinion. Duff McKegan, the bass player is an awesome musician, and after reading his, and Slash’s books, they are both the amazing human beings you hope that they would be. Slash, most people don’t know this, has a near encyclopedic knowledge of Dinosaurs lol, go figure!

I've been a fan of Guns and Roses since the late 80s but never saw them live until a couple of years ago when they came to Portland. It was a great show and definitely a checkmark for my concert bucket list, even with Axel's voice not being what it used to be. Hearing this song and so many others from back in the day had me feeling quite nostalgic that night. But finally seeing Slash perform a live solo was the real dream for me! Joe Walsh was doing a warm-up drill that resulted in a major hit..."Life in the Fast Lane," which wound up on arguably one the greatest albums of all time, "Hotel California ".
Izzy Stradlin was Axyl's childhood friend from Indiana who was a huge part of the Appetite for Destruction era of the band but eventually left the band mostly because he got sober and didn't want to lapse back into that life style. Reportedly he was also the only original member to graduate from high school (albeit with a D average;).
Izzy was the best. He's brought the grease and dirty rock n roll. I quickly lost interest when Izzy became less involved. His first solo album is great.
I was a freshman in college when this became a hit and I remember thinking that 80’s rock is already over. I meant that as a compliment, since I was not a fan of the Van Halen copy cats that dominated the genre for most of that decade. GnR brought back more of a 70’s hard rock sound, combining sweet melodies with emotive guitar solos like this one. Visually, Slash, Izzy, and Axl introduced a biker aesthetic in this video, which contrasted with the teased hair and bright colors that characterized the “hair bands” of the time (although you can still see that look here to some extent).
Shop class…. Along with Home-Economics and Music class. No level of the art of creating anything. No architecture, no home or culinary care and no musical talent. So they now have machines to do it all.
Weird, because I graduated from public HS in the late 90s and they had all of those classes (wood shop, auto shop, home ec, art, music, graphic design). Same with the other schools in my district. What schools allegedly “got rid” of these classes in the 80s?

Nirvana was often held up as the band that came along and just blew all the awful "hair metal" bands--think Whitesnake, Poison, Warrant, etc.--out of the water and ended that rein on inauthenticity in music. But Guns and Roses also delivered the killing blow. They had the hair and the tights, but they felt and sounded much more raw and real than those other bands. Slash's guitar opening riff and guitar solo on this song is one of the greatest in rock history, and a typically incredibly vocal from Axyl as well. Now it's time for you guys to go to "PARADISE CITY." You love seeing huge crowds and total chaos at live shows, and that song and video is GnR's wildest ride.
Yeah i always felt GnR had more of a sort of punk style/attitude than the hair metal bands at the time. I always noticed in this vid that Steven Adler has a TSOL tshirt on (punk band True Sounds of Liberty).
Agreed, Guns and grunge played a big part in ridding the world of the horrors of Warrant, Ratt, Poison et al but unfortunately Motley Crue kept going. Now THAT'S overrated shite, mediocre band (bassist that still can't play and a singer that never could sing) carried by a decent guitar player and very good drummer.
GNR not only made Rock relevant and dangerous again, they made sure the world knew it was done best when, performed by talented musicians burdened with the knowledge of human cultural and political themes and a hint of self destruction.
The breakdown “where do we go now?” was developed when they were writing the song in studio and they literally didn’t know what to do with the song at that point and it was an improv that ended up sounding great.
Check out Tokyo live, they were perfect live during that time, and had great backing singers. Matt Sorum was on drums (awesome), Gilby Clark rhytm guitar and Dizzi Reed keyboards. It was a great concert with so many good songs “Don't Cry”, “November Rain”, “Rocket Queen”, “Bad Obsession”, “Nightrain” and many more.

wood shop was my favorite class in high school i still have most of the furniture i made nearly 40 years ago next year it held up pretty well lol. during finals the teacher knew i didn't know the measurements of everything, so he wrote me a letter of recommendation for a job. not sure why but he did he said i was the best student he had in 27 years. too bad i still don't have that letter maybe because i did use it for my first job lol.

So a couple of weeks ago me and some friends were naming our list of black guitarists. The usual names came up. Hendrix, BB King, Albert King, Vernon Reid (Living Colour) even Chuck Berry. I said my number 1 was Slash. Half of them looked at me like I was speaking a different language. My mind was blown to find out that people didn't know that Slash, one of the most famous people on the planet, was black. And not just younger people, dudes around my age (47) didn't know this. That is just crazy to me.
You are so correct!! One of the greatest black guitarist ever. I’ll add Eric Giles. I have seen him probably 8 times, met him twice. Once had a Guinness with him. I want him as my next door neighbor the dude is so cool. Kingfish is another. I really worry about him though.

Biggest mistake public high schools made back in the 80s was to get rid of shop class and any technical Hands-On Blue Collar type classes
Shop class…. Along with Home-Economics and Music class. No level of the art of creating anything. No architecture, no home or culinary care and no musical talent. So they now have machines to do it all.
Weird, because I graduated from public HS in the late 90s and they had all of those classes (wood shop, auto shop, home ec, art, music, graphic design). Same with the other schools in my district. What schools allegedly “got rid” of these classes in the 80s?
I graduated 1975, went back for a 10-year High School reunion and the large technical education building that they had finished when I was a junior was closed

Nirvana was often held up as the band that came along and just blew all the awful "hair metal" bands--think Whitesnake, Poison, Warrant, etc.--out of the water and ended that rein on inauthenticity in music. But Guns and Roses also delivered the killing blow. They had the hair and the tights, but they felt and sounded much more raw and real than those other bands. Slash's guitar opening riff and guitar solo on this song is one of the greatest in rock history, and a typically incredibly vocal from Axyl as well. Now it's time for you guys to go to "PARADISE CITY." You love seeing huge crowds and total chaos at live shows, and that song and video is GnR's wildest ride.
Yeah i always felt GnR had more of a sort of punk style/attitude than the hair metal bands at the time. I always noticed in this vid that Steven Adler has a TSOL tshirt on (punk band True Sounds of Liberty).
Agreed, Guns and grunge played a big part in ridding the world of the horrors of Warrant, Ratt, Poison et al but unfortunately Motley Crue kept going. Now THAT'S overrated shite, mediocre band (bassist that still can't play and a singer that never could sing) carried by a decent guitar player and very good drummer.
GNR not only made Rock relevant and dangerous again, they made sure the world knew it was done best when, performed by talented musicians burdened with the knowledge of human cultural and political themes and a hint of self destruction.
You still haven't heard the "whole" song considering this is a shortened version.

The breakdown “where do we go now?” was developed when they were writing the song in studio and they literally didn’t know what to do with the song at that point and it was an improv that ended up sounding great.

Check out Tokyo live, they were perfect live during that time, and had great backing singers. Matt Sorum was on drums (awesome), Gilby Clark rhytm guitar and Dizzi Reed keyboards. It was a great concert with so many good songs “Don't Cry”, “November Rain”, “Rocket Queen”, “Bad Obsession”, “Nightrain” and many more.

Night Train, Welcome to the Jungle, Yesterday, Civil War...their version of Knocking in Heavens Door....Appatite and Use Your Illusion 2 were two of my favorite nin classic rock albums...a million years ago in highschool in the late 80s...

I am in SC - we still have shop class. In fact they have a whole curriculum where you can go to a high school here and half your day is in your chosen trade - construction, automotive, pre-med, pre-law, .....
Izzy was always my favorite. He was the strongest songwriter of the group. When he quit, the band started falling apart until it was over.

I was the only girl in my Woodshop class in the 70’s, and my daughters had Woodshop all 4 years and made some great projects! Let’s just say we also had a fond appreciation for kick ass rock music as well!
wood shop was my favorite class in high school i still have most of the furniture i made nearly 40 years ago next year it held up pretty well lol. during finals the teacher knew i didn't know the measurements of everything, so he wrote me a letter of recommendation for a job. not sure why but he did he said i was the best student he had in 27 years. too bad i still don't have that letter maybe because i did use it for my first job lol.

So a couple of weeks ago me and some friends were naming our list of black guitarists. The usual names came up. Hendrix, BB King, Albert King, Vernon Reid (Living Colour) even Chuck Berry. I said my number 1 was Slash. Half of them looked at me like I was speaking a different language. My mind was blown to find out that people didn't know that Slash, one of the most famous people on the planet, was black. And not just younger people, dudes around my age (47) didn't know this. That is just crazy to me.
You are so correct!! One of the greatest black guitarist ever. I’ll add Eric Giles. I have seen him probably 8 times, met him twice. Once had a Guinness with him. I want him as my next door neighbor the dude is so cool. Kingfish is another. I really worry about him though.

Great reaction to a great song. I remember when i first heard it in i guess '88 but it took me a little while to be a GnR fan. You guys should react to 'Civil War" by GnR imo. It's great lyrics and sadly they always apply to our world.

Slash bought that guitar in a hotel. Joe Perry Aerosmith's guitarist sold it when he had drug problems. Slash just happened across it and bought it for $6000. Later Joe saw it in the music video for November Rain and tried to buy it back from slash and after many attempts Slash still refused and kept it. Slash stole the hat from a shop on Venice Beach
