Coincidentally, earlier today I read that his solo was directed at Rolling Stone mag for not including him amongst the greatest 100 guitarists. Having seen this countless times, lately been watching the others amused, especially Tom who gestured for another solo. There was no rehearsal with Prince. He just told producers not to worry
Prince was on the list, he was low. He was on tour and did a show couple hours after this. He was also inducted that night so he focused on his stuff but was prepared for this too.
Absolutely! This was a giant middle finger to everyone on that stage who did not take his guitar skills seriously. Especially clapton who always said he was just a pop singer!
Oh man this is one of the most epic performances. I love watching George's son Dhani up on the stage playing guitar next to Tom Petty and watching Prince. He was definately enjoying Prince shred his guitar.🎸🔥🔥
So Tom Petty or one of the other guys invited Prince to join them on stage to do the solo after Prince was dissed by Rolling Stone's list of greatest guitarists ever. Guess he showed them 😂 I also heard that Eric Clapton was once asked how it felt to be the best guitarist in the world. He said I don't know; I'm not Prince? ❤ I may be misremembering who said what but you get the idea😅😅
Anybody who got into Prince albums knew he was a guitar god before this, but it was great to see him just wild out live like this among other legends. As you point out, everyone on stage was at the top of their field-and they were all still in awe of Prince. That’s how good he was.
George’s son Dahni is the kid playing next to Tom Petty. It freaks me out sometimes when I see Dahni because he looks so much like his father and especially now that he’s older. This is a fabulous tribute.
If you want to see a LOT more of Prince on guitar, check out "Prince Live - Play that funky Music - Hollywood Swinging - Fantastic Voyage 4/28/11" for starters. "Prince Motherless Child Live" is another astonishing performance. Also "Prince - 1+1+1=3 (Live At The Aladdin, Las Vegas, 12/15/2002)" - the list goes on...
When people talk about the guitar greats, Hendrix, Page, Van Halen, Blackmore, they forget that Prince was right up there with the BEST of the guitar gods. That dude shredded !
What a night . It’s not a competition ,it’s a communion, they created that performance together The joy all the musicians showed honoring George with one of his most iconic songs. Prince was a Showman .RIP to all the artists we’ve lost on that stage
I never realized that Prince was that good of a guitarist! Jeff Lynn was perfect for the part of the song he sang. This is my first time hearing this tribute and I really enjoyed it.
Prince really was a sleeper in terms of just how badass he was with the guitar! It's mostly because he could literally do ANYTHING musically, but he was an amazing talent!
Eh? The guy at the drum kit is Steve Ferrone, of the Average White Band and Tom Petty's Heartbreakers. The guy behind the congas playing the tambourine is Jim Capaldi from Traffic.
The story I heard was that a list of the top XX guitarist had come out that day or week and Prince wasn’t on it. And he was pissed. He was determined to show them how wrong they were. Boy did he. Absolute legend. For another legendary performance, check out Prince’s Super Bowl Halftime show. It was pissing down rain and the producers were freaking out. They thought he might back out of the show. He said, hold my beer. 💜💜💜
Prince was left off of the 25 greatest guitar players ever that day. Has Tom Petty to lower and step back the vocals for his solo and boy did he slay it! When Prince passed, this was the very first song that I played. Purple rain came out when I was 10 years old. I watched the movie when I was young. He became somewhat a prince fan when I got older and found out all the instruments he played to me. He was a phenom.. RIP Player
And Prince was a self-taught musician, songwriter, music arranger, and a badass singer, dancer, and showman besides. He also could play piano, keyboards, bass guitar, and saxophone. Unparalleled talent!
Prince could fluently play over 20 instruments by the time he was a teenager. I have heard that even though he was severely undersized, he was genuinely a good hockey and basketball player as well - that wasn't just a Charlie Murphy skit, that skit was based on reality LOL
There’s a huge back story to this. Price was pissed that Rolling Stone snubbed him in the list of 100 best guitar players of all time, so he had an ax to grind, also, Tom Petty and Prince had a huge mutual respect for each other and wanted to play together and they talked and felt this would kill two birds with one stone. Lynn’s guitar player didn’t want Prince there because he felt he would overshadow him (and he did) but Petty put his foot down and said Prince will absolutely play. Which is why you can see them both smile at each other during the solo.
George was amazing…human, talent and contribution to the Beatles was incredible and more than you know unless you dig in to how much he really participated
One of the most perfect musical moments. Love Prince and the fact he's THIS good at guitar is just crazy on top of everything else. He doesn't get mentioned enough, but people who know know.
Damn, I miss Prince so much! This video always puts a smile on my face. He is killin’ it and looks so HAPPY to be doing so. His cheeky smile, the backward half stage dive, and Dhani Harrison behind him (George’s son) is having a great time watching him. What a loss. I bloody well hate 2016! That year took too many greats. Great reaction, fellas. Thank you. ❤😊
Prince didn't rehearse this although he did attend rehearsals!!! He just watched and then he left!!! This classic is the result!!! One of the most underrated guitarists in the world!!! He mastered 28 instruments and he is untouchable on virtually any instrument!!! Stevie Wonder is the only other musician in that rare air!!! Bravo, Prince!!!
Dhani Harrison, Georges son on acoustic. Prince was always very talented. When he was a teenager, he told my older brother he was going to be the next Hendrix. He threw the guitar to the guy who had been holding him up.
George Harrison and Prince were both being inducted into the Hall of Fame that night, so Prince of course got an extra well deserved spotlight. If you ever do any reactions to Prince, I think his best stuff is from the VHS Sign O' The Times. It's here on RUclips for purchase.
Funny, I'm just a little too old to be much of a Prince fan. In fact, prior to this performance, I didn't even know he could play. He really could. Respect for Prince.
Prince is an incredible guitarist. There is a club in downtown Minneapolis called The Dakota. It's known for jazz and blues. Prince always used to show up there late at night and just jam. I had the privilege of seeing Prince all over Minneapolis at random in the 90's. He' was an utter genius.

Note that the Grammy mentions are wins, it doesn’t count the numerous nominations they received. Also Petty and Lynne were part of the Traveling Wilbury’s along with George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan. Harrison, Petty, Lynne, Winwood and Preston are also song writers and producers.
The younger gentleman playing guitar, slightly behind Tom Petty, is George Harrison’s son, who clearly enjoyed Prince’s solo. Not only was Prince’s playing phenomenal but, even within that group, he was the consummate showman.
Y’all should hear the original! The haunting voice of George and the distinctive tone of his guitar which, on the studio recording, was accompanied by Eric Clapton!
Not only a fabulous, way underated guitar player and great singer/songwriter but one of the all time great showmen! His music was not in my wheelhouse but I always had great respect and admiration for Prince as an artist.
One of George’s and the Beatles’ greatest songs. The young fella with brown hair is George’s son, Dani. George died of brain cancer in 2001. This is a tribute for him.

The look on George’s son Dahni’s face when Prince starts going off is Priceless.
Pure Joy !!
Dani still had the ability to be starstruck.🤩
Petty too tho, all smiles, like wow.
My guitar watches this video while I'm at work
LOLOL not your guitar with the "It's Fine/Dead Inside" guy smile
😊😅
lmao
👏
From an old school metal head and rock guy, I've always said Prince is one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Just an all around great musician
Agreed. I read somewhere that Prince could play 17 different instruments. I can't even NAME 17 different instruments.
@@GREENPUKE99 Prince played 21 different instruments, according to google. Literal genius
Metalhead here... Prince is an absolute inspiration. And an even better bass player and drummer than he is a guitarist
Metal was my thing in the 80s and didn't give Prince credit...Until the ending solo in " Let's Go Crazy."
You have my attention.
Agree! And he makes it look easy!!
George’s son looks so much like him it’s crazy. And the joy on his face playing with all these legends. And prince absolutely killed it 🔥🔥🔥
Dahni looks like a perfect hologram of George on stage, still incredible to witness.
This is perfection..RIP George,♥️ Tom,♥️ Prince.♥️
All gone too soon!😿

I just came here to post that so I'm glad I scrolled through and saw that you did that already. Lol
@@michellec2514 Me too lol.. The other thing is the guy who left him off the list is on the board of the Hall of Fame....
There was a thing about the guy who did the initial solo, who I think annoyed some folks for trying to take more of the spotlight than deserved.
Prince was on the list, he was low.
He was on tour and did a show couple hours after this.
He was also inducted that night so he focused on his stuff but was prepared for this too.

I've always said that Prince is THE most underrated guitar player of all time. One of the best!
I remember a reporter once asked Eric Clapton/ what's it like being the greatest guitarist in the world. And Eric said I don't know/ go ask prince.
George’s son Dahni is the kid playing next to Tom Petty. It freaks me out sometimes when I see Dahni because he looks so much like his father and especially now that he’s older. This is a fabulous tribute.
Prince threw his guitar up and as far as we know it is still orbiting the earth 🌍🌎
Legend has it that Prince threw it up to heaven to play it later
Watch closely...you can see it being caught.
I LOVE the way George Harrison's son reacts to Prince.

Prince nailed this tune. When he played to Dhani it was just priceless.
Prince was inducted that same night into the hall of fame, so it was so appropriate that he got to show off his chops. So missed.

The guy drumming was Paul Schaeffer who was the band leader for The David Letterman Show. Quite an accomplished musician himself.

I read an interview with drummer Steve from AWB and he said Prince knew who he was and he was surprised about it. Respect.
Prince is the greatest performer I've ever seen 😍 💜
Every guitar on that stage gently weeped but Prince’s axe roared like a fkng lion!
