The church banned some of Descartes' books and threatened to burn them. He had to disappear for awhile to avoid problems with them. Same things going today. Excellent video.

AI doesn’t think, it has calculated by approximation, via training on data, how facts relate to each other and how to represent text internally as a nuanced meaning. Then, when you enter a prompt, it calculates the fitting response to that nuanced meaning based on probability. This is why you can get linguistically an answer to your question, even if the facts in that answer are incorrect (especially if your question is about something really specific that the model has not been properly trained on)

To be honest, some people probably already thought that computers think while using an old fashioned user interface, but now that the software is communicating with our human interface, in stead of the other way around, it might confuse more people. When we are talking, we tend to find out who we are talking with. So we are inclined to discover the personality of the other participant in the conversation. Or the chain of thought, that person has. So when I see someone thinking that an AI thinks, I was inclined to straighten that out: it does not think, it calculates. It's capable to communicate in human language, but in many ways, it's not different than googling something, or using other software.
But where is the thought coming from? Am I the thought or the thinker of the thought or both? I doubt I am and often I'm definitely not thinking. So there it is. Thanks for making that so clear. Do you ever wonder what people will be saying you said that you didn't say Rodney after you're gone?

I is optional, if you do linguistically correct transformations, the lack of causal relationship becomes painfully obvious.. "I" just means, the producer of the sound of the speech. "I am a non-existent being"... It is a linguistic construction. If there is no one speaking about being, is there thinking, being? yes.. is there I? no, because I is the producer of language.
But 'I think, therefore I am' is a bit silly. Thought isn't a fundamental part of consciousness. A plant or animal doesn't think, therefore it is not? It's more like 'I am, therefore I (can) think'
I think you can even take it a step further and add an adjective like I think I am happy therefore I am happy. Or lucky or attractive or wealthy or whatever you want to be. “As one thinketh in his heart so is he.” I thinketh therefore I ameth.
