Sadly thing it was the last special that Jim Henson made before falling ill to pneumonia and passing away very suddenly. RIP Jim Henson you were one my creative hero’s.
Damnit, this special is far too wholesome and adorable to even begin to hate, and even just seeing Jim show up at the end in this review of the special after seeing so many of his greatest creations made me cut a tear.

It's a joke because Sesame Street is supposed to be an educational program for children so they make a joke about it by saying "where we come from, this is small talk."
I have been ADDICTED to this special ever since I first saw it 35 years ago, & I am SO glad that SOMEONE is FINALLY giving it the attention & respect that it so very badly deserves!!!!
THIS! I remember when this premiered and it was so magical! Its been wonderful to watch it again on YT these last few years. Gives me warm memories. Very glad Nostaligia Critic gave it some love.
Bert: "Ernie, why must you always humiliate me?" Ernie: "Come on, Bert. Somebody has to play Mama." Nostalgia Critic as Ernie: "Our female cast is limited, and we still don't know what sex Elmo is." ROFL
Beat me to it. Yeah, they massacred the special for it's now out of print DVD. Hopefully, its uncut version appears on DVD soon, despite the characters belonging to 3 companies now instead of 1.
Strange because i swear if you go to the Walgreens there is dvds of "a muppet Christmas" Edit: Just checked it was called a "Very Merry Muppet Christmas".
It was released on DVD, but the DVD and VHS releases are both lacking a number of songs because of copyright issues. The original television broadcast is only available from RUclips and other unofficial sources. Here's to hoping that the original version may find an unedited release, because it was one of the best Muppet productions. The fact that Jim Henson was in it at the end is truly classic.
NC doesn't review movies, he merely explains the plot with a few jokes and references added in there. It's still entertaining, but if you want to see what a real 'review' looks like then watch any Plinkett video
As someone who considers themself as a huge muppet fan I am ashamed to say that I didn’t even know this existed! Thank you critic for constantly introducing me to great content, essepically muppet related!
I saw this movie this year (2022), and it's basically just them singing Christmas carols, but the story (or what of a story there is) is very heartwarming and is everything Christmas. I love this, and will watch this every year along with other classic Christmas movies.
Sprout owns sesame Street. Jim Henson company still owns fraggle rock characters and have lent them out to hbo from what I heard. Disney owns the muppets.
This calls for a Kermit Trilogy, three Gonzo movies, one Big Bird movie, etc, in a series of three phases, all leading up to a two part epic Finale movie... A total of 60 movies.
After that *shivers* last Christmas special review, it's nice to even it out with a beloved and classic holiday special! I fucking love you, Critic! =)
I found the full version of this on RUclips and figured I'd show it to my mother since she loved Jim Henson's stuff. When the man behind the puppet's appeared, she almost cried out of joy seeing him with his creations again. He died while she was pregnant with my brother and was happy to see him again. Thanks Doug Walker, it was a trip down memory lane for the greatest person I know.
I thought that Micheal Kane skit at the beginning was actually legit until I recognized the Nostalgia Critics voice. This is how parodies should be executed.
Christmas and Critic. Love it. Also, that blinking man creeped me out so much I forgot who he was and thought he was Jeremy Irons for a moment. And I don't mean names. I mean looks.
You made my day by reviewing this. This special was a major part of my Christmas childhood, and I still watch it every year with my husband now. In high school, I even started a tradition of some of my friends getting together to celebrate "Mink Day", when we'd get together and watch the special. Like the special, it's a silly reason to get everyone together. "Watch out for the icy patch!"
When I saw this was being reviewed, I was just thinking "please be nice"... my mom recorded this off the TV when it first aired and we have it on a vhs full of Christmas specials- Mickey's Christmas Carol, Rudolph, Emmett Otter's Jugband Christmas, Charlie Brown and Claymotion's Christmas special. I remember how much we wanted to watch it all the way through at once, but my mom would never let us. :P it all starts with this special and even now, I look back on it so fondly. Bits and pieces of what I love about Christmas started here- I cannot even put it into words. So many things :D i love this, I hope it gets to DVD just like Emmett Otter did ;)
It is part of his actor lectures, think its called Film for Actors. I remember watching it, totally mesmerized. The man is great with the camera, but... well, the flaws are shown here.
S Sealark I get what he's saying about the making love to the camera thing though. The attention from the camera is alluring, but you have to pretend like it's not there.
It sounds strange out of context, but his comments about blinking and staring are actually extremely important facets of acting. On stage, you're never supposed to turn your back to the audience or turn your head away from the audience while talking. On camera, blinking can be very distracting -- so, performers get used to not blinking as often as they normally would when in front of a camera, which is very difficult, what with the lights and all. Also, on camera, even the littlest flicker of emotion can be perceived by the audience, so if your eyes are moving around or you're blinking constantly, you may distract the audience or indicate an emotion you aren't actually aiming for. This was especially important back in the day, when takes were very expensive and often pretty long, and zoomed-in profile shots were the norm.
12:07 “100 people burned to death!” “Hey, don’t butcher the tone, Waldorf, there are kids here!” “Y’mean people would just _let_ their children watch this show?” *cue laughter*
I got my DVD from a small company in england, they can't release it any more thanks to Disney never willing to share with HBO (fraggles) and children's television network
I'm a '94 kid and I had this on VHS when I was little. I actually saw this before The Muppet Christmas Carol. This special totally needs more attention it's one of my favorite Muppet and Christmas movies ❤
This actually did get a DVD release. I own it. The problem is it can never get released ever again for obvious legal reasons, but we can certainly hope so.
DISNEY!!! I do hate them! It's like bloody show biz monopoly! They own everything! Even the dark Emperor in Return of the Jedi isn't as evil or greedy!
From what I recall, the DVD also excluded several songs due to copyright. I remember owning it once and was pissed when I think Fozzy & Snowman's musical number was cut.
Well, Disney owns the Muppets now. All they have to do is buy Sesame Workshop, whoever owns Fraggle Rock, then get clearance licenses for certain songs.
I want to see a Captain America Civil War type movie for the Muppets. Kermit will be Capitan America, Elmo would be Iron Man, Big Bird will be Ant Man, Grover will be Spider Man, and Mrs Piggy will be Black Widow.
I still have two good working VCR's, one was a pretty expensive Sony one that I got when I was like 16 and it still works. I've tried several from places like Goodwill when they have those .99 tag days, pretty bad chance of them working tbh. I started a few years ago making digital copies of my favorite VHS tapes for convenience and just in case the worst happens. You would not believe how hard it is to find a good VHS to DVD recording program that's not a scam. Even a few I paid for were crap. Taking a copy of a VHS though usually leaves a lot to be desired in quality though, but it's what I have for stuff like this that won't hit DVD's.
I agree, they’re terrible but hey if it helps NC I will gladly suffer through these stupid reactions. Still slightly better than the commercials on cable at least.
I still have this and watch it every year on Christmas Eve. It's on a tape filled with various Christmas Specials. The tape I have was recorded from Christmas Eve 1989 and following this on the tape is ALF's christmas special which is the saddest shit ever.
drew Thompson: If your buddies and you are such fans of his, how do you not know how to properly spell his last name? Or his first name, for that matter? Did you watch this review because you really like Dug Whalkher, the Nostahljuh Kritick?
Mariomaniac88 "Just happens to be" It wouldn't surprise me one bit if they're collaborating on some kind of Christmas crossover and AVGN getting on the same schedule as the Critic is part of a prelude. Then again, probably not as the Critic's schedule of release is actually Tuesdays on the Channel Awesome site, and they upload to RUclips a day later, so the schedule is still a bit off.
I purchased this on DVD in December of 1999 and still own it. It was the only copy in the store (KMart) and I have not seen it available anywhere since!! It is my favorite Christmas special and that was my miraculous Christmas!
If you don't know this special...... you have no childhood Christmas. My parents play this every year around Christmas. It is most likely they'll play it again this Christmas. But GDI DO I LOVE THIS SPECIAL!
Thank you for giving this special some love. It was one of my favorites back in the day. I remember being so excited for it when it aired in 1987. Mom said I had to eat dinner and take a bath and then we could watch it while me and my sister laid on the blankets on the living room floor. Christmas lights, decor and tree all lit up. The smell of our blue spruce in the air and the knowing that the next few days were gonna be filled with excitement and magic. Gawd, THOSE were the days. I love to remember 🥰
This was a fun Muppets special, having Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock crossover is exciting. Too bad the Muppets and Sesame Street have different ownership rights, which prevents it from having a digital release.
Actually, according to the "The Swedish Chef and his uncle" sketch with Danny Kaye, the Chef's name is Tom. (No, really. You can find it on RUclips and everything!)
Actually, I'm not kidding, they confirm the Swedish Chef's name to also be Tom (at least he's just called that because nobody can say his mock-Swedish name). One of the guest stars plays as his uncle.
OMG, did I ever love this show as a young kid. My grandmother had it on tape, and we would all sit around her tv watching this at supper. So many great memories associated with this show.

Not enough people know about this Christmas Special. Thanks for giving it a chance to shine, Doug.

It wasn't that good, and he said 'zee' instead of z.
It took me awhile to realize who he reminded me of: Alfred from the Nolan Batman movies.
drew Thompson: If your buddies and you are such fans of his, how do you not know how to properly spell his last name? Or his first name, for that matter? Did you watch this review because you really like Dug Whalkher, the Nostahljuh Kritick?
Michael Caine looks like a guy who never ages cuz he always looked old.
plasticbutler he could still charm the pants off of just about any woman on earth. ..the man's just got "it"
Andrew The RUclips Noob hell, most of the men, too.
Check out Alfie or Get Carter.
Like Max Von Sydow
8:14 ....Doug did you marry the younger sister of the grandma in Rapsetty Street Kids?
AVGN and NC at the same day!!!!!!!!!!
That can't be a coincidence!
NEEEEEEEEEEERRRRDDD!!!!!!
Pretty sure this happened last week too. AVGN might just be getting a schedule, which just happens to be the same as NC
Mariomaniac88
"Just happens to be"
It wouldn't surprise me one bit if they're collaborating on some kind of Christmas crossover and AVGN getting on the same schedule as the Critic is part of a prelude.
Then again, probably not as the Critic's schedule of release is actually Tuesdays on the Channel Awesome site, and they upload to RUclips a day later, so the schedule is still a bit off.
NEEEEERRRRRRDDDDD!!!! I was gonna watch that next, actually.
Muppets: Infinity War
Me vs. Everybody Muppets: Cvil War
I purchased this on DVD in December of 1999 and still own it. It was the only copy in the store (KMart) and I have not seen it available anywhere since!! It is my favorite Christmas special and that was my miraculous Christmas!
"Nice Review, Doug!!"
This Is One Of My Favorite Christmas Specials! (:
Not Chuck Productions
(:
Jasmine Bryant my favorite one is that one.
there must had been a lot of hands up in all those puppets. Merry Christmas ;)
Oh bork
If you don't know this special...... you have no childhood Christmas. My parents play this every year around Christmas. It is most likely they'll play it again this Christmas. But GDI DO I LOVE THIS SPECIAL!
walter's keaton is pretty good
Don't you mean Caine? Now I thought they made fun of the bullied kid.
*Caine. Michael Caine.
My cocain
I thought you meant Walter The Muppet.
na it's definitely michael keaton
Holy crap, in the vhs version that bit where the snow man first comes to life got cut, so did parts of the home movies with the baby muppets.
“Last known footage of Skeeter”
“We don’t talk about her”
We don’t talk about Skeeter no no we don’t talk about Skeeter
Hell yeah! Lol!
Nice "encanto" reference!
*_-I K E A' S N U T S A C K-_*
Once again, Channel Awesome delivers another fantastic, hilarious video
Thank you for giving this special some love. It was one of my favorites back in the day. I remember being so excited for it when it aired in 1987. Mom said I had to eat dinner and take a bath and then we could watch it while me and my sister laid on the blankets on the living room floor. Christmas lights, decor and tree all lit up. The smell of our blue spruce in the air and the knowing that the next few days were gonna be filled with excitement and magic. Gawd, THOSE were the days. I love to remember 🥰
13:47 "37, MY GIFT'S BEEN GIVEN 37 TIMES?!" "At once?"
Burt is Squidward. How did I never realize?!
Tsundere squidward
No no despite both of them being long nose grouches with a frown on a lot is constantly pestered by an really eagered child man
Oh wait
He is probably played by Rodger bumpus
@@briangarcia1586 he is played by Frank Oz, who is Yoda.
Ikr
9:30 commercial end
João Victor you do the Lord's work
The Michael Caine skit at the end was possibly one of the best moments of this year's NC, top bloody notch.
7:29 that sounds more like a mixture of rick Sanchez and Louis ck than Kermit
Munjee Syedd more like George Carlin
Munjee Syedd more like ad
SHUT THAT DOOR!
I love the Jim Henson cameo
The turkey was voiced by Rizzo.
That's what you get for bad mouthing A Muppet Christmas Carol, Critic. A proper "Caine"ing.
* blink * * blink *
Wait you forgot your mascera!
10:05 Big bird is an immortal life form,
He can live through anything
I hope your sponsors pay according to obnoxiousness. Stardust owes you a big time payoff. Honey is okay.
Hm?
I know I was cringe, but I had fun doing it.
