It is nice seeing that in Hetalia Russia was affected by it, the enormous amount of pressure, the loneliest, the lust for more power. Thought it seems he is sad. Of course he is. His actions are not justified nor can he control them, to live on, to survive he must do it. As people say "The strong survive and the weak must die". It's as simple as that, isn't it?
I hate how the fandom portrays Russia, Ivan since we're talking about Hetalia here, as a psycho maniac who tortures the Baltics and adores blood and all that crap when in reality, he's just got the brain of a child. He never really aged past the mental age of about eight because of General Winter's constant torment every year and the constant cold he's lived through, he doesn't know his own strength and thinks everything in a game, hence why he crushes Latvia's, Raivis', head and stops him growing. He thinks it's a game that's he's playing with his friend. He doesn't realize he's actually hurting someone. Think about how children behave. Now imagine a child in a larger, more powerful body and they can do some serious damage without meaning to.

I think what makes him so special is his mental toughness, he has worked though many scarring, mind-breaking events; by himself and still keeps his head up, hoping for the future. These features are further expressed through his character songs, which I have to admit crying to. Even though he does have others that care about him, the only one who really sees him without political influence is General Winter, but deep inside he wants an equal; someone who can see eye to eye (I actually think most of the countries are like this, as their relationships being limited by their duties as a country.) I greatly admire a character like Russia who can keep his heart pure after being destroyed so many time. (sorry this was so long :) )

I think Russia is really cool. The world pushed him around and when he finally fought back, the whole world just cried "he's evil". Even though he's creepy, he's not all bad, he just wants friends. :'( Poor Ivan - but for this and more he is my fav hetalia character by far.

He is frequently mistaken as a monster.......Russia's past is full of bloody wars and power hungry people that gave him a "cracked" mentality. He acts like a child because that was when he was safe. And also he just doesn't know any better. He wasn't taught that that was wrong.
This is probably the most powerful hetalia character song out there. From my perspective, it's about the struggles each countrie's character endures by being a country. Russia, through all the bloodshed he's seen, all the confusion in politics, is becoming numb to the human side of himself. By some point, he will recognize that it isn't kindness that gets him far. It's when he succeeds. It is in that that he begins to loose his soul. This song is the embodiment of that process.
I feel horrible for russia. He never deserved to have a history like he had, uggh the teutonic knights and mongolia and denmark and sweden are all to blame for this. Why are China's and Russia's songs kinda negative or makes feel sad.... My body hurts all over" and "In the grief of this unending world, why is it that people fight?" I think it's dependable. I would say he isn't because he's not doing these things on purpose, I feel like he was never taught that doing bad things to other nations is wrong. When he gets all scary, it's like he doesn't know that he's doing it, so when people become afraid of him, it makes him sad because he thinks it's normal due to all the bloody fighting in his past. That's what I think. It's confusing and I don't even really understand it myself, but..

This is one of my favorite character songs from Hetalia, but Russia scares me a little. But then again, people have told me I'm a lot like him... Misunderstood, Isolated, so I have a slight respect for him. My smile nearly always looks insane, so I often cosplay as non-smiling characters, so I don't have to scare anyone. Honestly, sometimes I'm quite happy because of this smile. ^J^
