#FixOrFlop
my heart stopped when I saw the sticker covered with thermal paste
I almos fell from the chair from laughing when I found out I had forgotten to peel the dticker on my Fuma 2 cooler. Thankfully, I was using a carbon pad, so it was very easy to fix.
I've built around 10 systems or so by now, so I'm confident I at least know all the basics, and even I forgot that once, so it can happen to anyone.
I'd like to see some testing. "Doing nothing" is way exaggerated imo, it's not like some tiny piece of plastic insulates 100%. Chances are, the user didn't even notice anything was wrong.
@@torture10 LTT tested that a while back. Lets say its not optimal but you should get a post at least.
@@telefonbarmann4514 Depends. I tested it myself and some stickers are barely noticeable and others are instant 100C.
I swear I wait on these. Ill be at work wanting to watch a fix or flop episode but ive watched every single one. I cant get enough! So much I recently built my own PC 😂
That really means a lot! Thanks for the support!
Agreed. These videos are pretty great.
I know, right? I wonder why Greg's not uploading at least one of these per day.
Bro fr tho that’s me
@@mistermudpie well cause all of the edits it needs and then he may not get as much computers with problems as we may think
This series is incredibly useful it's the reason i discovered you, keep up
Thank you! Glad it could help!
True - but it’s not just useful, it’s also a delight for fans of mysteries.
Updating the BIOS goes out to make a coffee.....power flickers once, twice & goes out then the whole neighborhood hears you scream NOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😂🤣
been in this position myself. luckily I had another CPU to use. Its a great help to those that havent come across it before
A computer never reboots slower than when you're actively watching it, hoping no issues pop up. And it never reboots faster than when you're trying to get into BIOS.
Everytime I see someone on Facebook saying that they plan on updating a 1000/2000 series CPU to a 5000 series I ALWAYS comment to tell them to update the BIOS while they still have the old CPU. I'm glad that bios flashback is part of the spec on the AM5 platform although I'd prefer it to be mandatory and not just a recommendation for the board manufacturers.
yeah :D I upgraded my old R3600 to a R7 5800x on my B350m :) was not 100% sure, if the beta BIOS was the right one (dosent say for what cpu series) was a little bit of a gamble but it worked xD
@@Psyko_Blood In general, you should use the non beta version in order to avoid any potential problems that can appear in the short or long term. I would do latest stable before trying beta if no info was shown
@@samy_k97 damn youtube dosent show up my comment so here again:
I needed the BETA bios, because on MSI website for my MSI B350m Mortar Arctic, under CPU compatibility for my 5800x it clearly says: "Latest Beta BIOS". So I knew i needed a Beta BIOS. But at the description for the beta bios itself, it dosent say for which CPU Series. Thats what I mean :D
@@Psyko_Blood That makes sense. Looking at the BIOS date. The latest stable version was from 2019 while Ryzen 5000 released at 2020. It would be ideal if MSI did release a stable version by now
@@samy_k97 yeah o: but hey, my beta bios runs perfect so far.. over a half year now on
I like the step by step process you try for issues, sometimes it's simple, other times you get some nasty issues that most of us wouldn't even try!
CPU, I'm callin it... no wait, Motherboard. No no, its the RAM. Wait wait... its actually a fan header. 100% fan header.
I'm a computer tech and work for a computer repair shop. I do troubleshooting like this most of the day, yet I find myself still watching these videos with interest! I guess troubleshooting and the potential to learn new things is just in the blood of some of us. There's also something satisfying when you fix something, or see someone else fix something / achieve success.
Probably someone already mentioned this but on the website of the motherboard there's a compatibility tab that will tell which BIOS revision is needed to make the CPU you want to install work, even if it's not listed in the actual BIOS revision notes. I know picking the last non beta one is the right thing to do in most cases anyway, but just wanted to add this.
I know some people trash on you clearing the cmos to fix a pc but I have gotten 2 motherboards working by doing just that. Thanks Greg for teaching me to do this so I can save junk hardware
Your channel is very educational and entertaining. Great content my man! Keep it coming.
I really like this series. It's often pretty straightforward but occasionally still educational.
I wait on these too, build insight, designs, part combinations and repair tips. Love this series! I recently made a build with the same case, used 4 fans with a splitter, good stuff!!!
I got that board for my grandmother. 2200g, a Nvme drive and a whole 8gbs of ram. She's screaming fast for her.
I really appreciate this series, I recently built a friend a pc and it didn’t post. I was 99% sure I didn’t break it and I was right. After doing what I’ve learned from this series I fixed it. Turns out it was the HD_AUDIO connector from the case 😂
Appreciate the video . I love to share the experience of someone fixing something.
I'm happy to see you were familiar with the board issues and were able to fix the problem.
Love your work Sir! I am also a builder/repair person and have had so many similar situations happen to me!! I don't miss your videos, they have helped me miss some things that I have missed in the past!! Keep up the good work Sir!
So glad that this one was only in need of a BIOS update. Its not my PC, but thanks for doing it! 🙂
Years ago, I had the same exact issue and identified it almost immediately, except my ASUS board wasn't exactly cheap ($240) and I had to buy a 3200g just to get into the BIOS and flash it... Good times (not really). Great video as always!
I always find these episodes when I wake up for work here in Eastern Europe. It gives me something positive before the start of daily grind.
I have never built my own PC, but fully intend to once I am working again, but one of the key things I learned ages ago is make sure things are compatible out of the box.
This is why PC part picker is such a useful site.
Back to the series I love the most
I have the same board running a ryzen 5 and didn't need to update the board bios, Put the chip in and hey presto it fired up.
Loved the rookie mistake of leaving the warning sticker on the cold plate though.
Cleanest delivery yet Greg! thank you love it.
I did just this a couple of weeks ago switching out a 3200g for a 4500 on a A320 motherboard. Spent three to four hours trying different things. Finally went to the motherboard manufacturer's website because I was too lazy to look for the physical manual and happened to notice the processor/memory compatibility tab which reminded me of what the problem was.
good thing you found that warning sticker!
Awesome as always- Thanks for all the CES coverage!
Thanks for watching it! Still good to be home! :-)
Wow, that owner is a fortunate guy in so many ways. Nice fix!
The best series I've ever watch!!
This videos Always make my day, thank you Greg.
Awesome videos. Keep them coming.
The suspense..... It never gets old
Love these video Greg very informative and entertaining :)
Great video. A couple of other channels actually tested what happened if you left the plastic sticker on the cold plate. Surprisingly, while not ideal, on CPU's with low to mid level TDP's, it didn't cause a real issue. The temps were higher, but it was by a small enough amount that it wouldn't have been easily apparent.
Just found your page. Love your Channel ib like that you help out the viewers and help fix there computers. No1 does that. Keep doing whet your doing. And at the same time. We are all learning how to fix our own.
Thanks for watching!
Human stupidity never dissapoints :D The sticker literally telling you with huge red letters to remove it and the guy just keeps it on the coldplate xd
I always catch myself looking at your Sempiternal album you hung on the wall. Such a good album that got me into BMTH
Thanks for your vids Greg
Nice fairly quick fix. Especially after the trip to Vegas.
Nice one. Leaving the sticker on the cooler is obviously detremental for the cooling, however I managed to put the Fan on a tower-cooler in reverse (sucking air through the cooler-instead of blowing fresh air into it), that is also fun (ca. 20 degree Celsius difference in my case).
Love it Gregg as always!
Ordered some new parts ( 7700x - 32GB 6000 DDR5 - ASUS TUF B650 Plus - Kingston KC3000 2TB ) Definitely going to use that code and get a fresh windows key :) Thanks for all you do for the community Greg, it really is fantastic.
That's the best type of fix there is----no parts required
Hey I stumbled across your channel a year and a half ago, when I had a problem. I learned alot from you so far. Thanks for the free information buddy!
Much appreciated!
@@GregSalazar no problem. Thanks for taking the time to read the comments. FYI the aio is made by ID cooling and they are great, 49.99 on Amazon. I've used it on about 5 builds.
Thanks for the content, love when ever I see something posted by you
I appreciate that!
I built an EBay special Ryzen pc last year. I specifically made sure the board I bought did bios flashback just in case I ran into this.
More valuable and successful troubleshooting info from fix or flop
My wife, "Kram, are you coming shopping?" ten minutes later, "Are you coming shopping!?!! She then comes in and says, "You're bloody addicted to that guys channel!" Haha!!
People who do not peel off stickers with ample red warnings on them... How are you able to do it? Tell me the secrets. LOL 😂😂
Digging that 240, nice work btw.
Greg just dropped another clip & I'm here for it!
This season is a learning lesson for all computer user ❤️ Big shoutout for my brother ❤
love you Greg! keep up the good work!
Actually turned me on to scdkeys. Now I don't have a annoying watermark on Windows 10. Thank you!!!
Nice to see a non-catastrophic problem. Been a while that the problem was something easily manageable
I updated a BIOS once without checking the weather network. Not 2 seconds after I hit Enter to start the process did I hear a Thunderclap. Went over to the window to unfurl the blinds expecting daylight... I saw the nastiest, tornado supercell generating angry swirling clouds in the sky. The next 27 minutes where some of the most intense, nail biting moments of my life. Power held strong and BIOS updated successfully allowing me to use my at the time new Club 3D royalQueen Radeon R9 280X 3GB. What an adventure that was!
When you said " some of you may know already what it might be..."
I honestly guessed BIOS issue. That's the first time I guessed it ( although you gave a clue) 🤣
Just had this issue not even two weeks ago. ASUS TUF Gaming X570 Plus paired with an AMD 5600G. There are debug LEDs on the mobo. We would get an amber light and nothing else. This is supposed to indicate a DRAM issue, but I knew from watching these what it was. Using the sticker on the motherboard we were able to determine it was shipped with a 1407 BIOS which was incompatible with the 5000 series. We ended up buying a 3300X just so we could update the BIOS to the latest version. Lo and behold, that was the problem. However, if my friend would have waited, AMD does offer a loaner kit with a CPU so users can update their BIOS if their board doesn't come with flashback. Goodness knows how long it takes to get one of those. But they are free so long as AMD can verify the BIOS sticker on the motherboard as being incompatible.
Another classic problem. The "Warning Label" still on the cooler I have run into a couple of times. Won't post until the BIOS is correct another classic problem. Good work
You should start a series called Pimp My PC. Have like set packages that you can buy for like the case, cables, RGB, and Aio's etc. Just to make their pc look cool. I would personally pay you to pick out a case manage the cables and pick options to make it look cool. You do a great job and Keep the videos coming!
Watching this series is why I remembered to update my BIOS before installing a 5600 onto my B450 board, which I'd had since 2018.
Early! it’s 6:44am and this is definitely the perfect content to wake up to 😂
Hahah I appreciate the early viewership!
Greg's hair come and go like magic haha
I have the exact same case for my next build so... I feel like i need to watch this
I wish you did these way long ago. Would have helped me a ton with trouble shooting
Looks like this build was destined to end up on Fix or Flop lol Be it no post or crazy temps lol
I'm on an Asus ROG Strix B450 F Gaming II, and I went from a R7 2700 to an R5 5600 with no BIOS flash required. I made sure it supported the CPU without flash before I bought it. It's weird, but I've been computing since Win 98 SE, and I've never flashed a BIOS. I've always been terrified to do it because way back then it was kind of an expert only thing, and one could easily brick the board. Even though things have gotten a lot easier, and simpler, it's still one of those primordial fears that keeps me from doing it, lol.
Great video! Love this series!
Glad you enjoy it!
Thanks Greg. I love this series.
Thanks a ton for watching!
If they mention Agesa, as they did with this board, thats going to be CPU compatibility.
I love those little cases , cooler master, master box Q300L. The Thermaltake Core V21 is another one of my favorite mATX cases. It can clear a 180mm tall tower cooler. So even the tallest Noctua tower coolers will fit. BTW, that is a nice build. The Ryzen 4500 & 5500 offer excellent performance for the price. Don't be afraid of them. But maybe use an A520 motherboard so you won't have first boot bios issues.
Gamer's Nexus slammed it, but if you're throwing low power components in or not doing anything intensive it's a fine enough little case and reasonably modular. I got its Q500L counterpart for like $30 after rebates since it's about as compact as can still fit an ATX board to set up an old system as a spare PC.
today is going to arrive my new cpu fan so I'm glad that this reminds me to check the plate before installing it
I built an Opteron 4000 series server that had this problem with the used Supermicro motherboard I bought on eBay. Luckily the board shipped to me with a working, compatible CPU installed to protect the socket, so I booted with it to flash a new BIOS version that supported my preferred chip (faster, lower power)
Deep clean ing my pc. Total newb thanks for giving me the courage
Haaa I bricked it. The cpu paste stuck to the fan and I bent the pins😢😂😂😢 I am legally blind so I won’t beat myself up too much.
Do you know the best amd cpu to put in a b450 dash 😊gigabyte board?
i came across this issue when i upgraded my stepsons pc last year, bought the r5 4500 for him as had the motherboard and no cpu after upgrading my own system board, wouldn't boot, put my working cpu in updated bios then switched to his new cpu and worked first time, i'd never have thought about it if i didn't watch your videos regularly. When you mentioned in this video the board and cpu, my gut reaction before you said anything was BIOS lol.
the bois issue ended up being a guardian angel.
I've never had a BIOS update fail once I got it to start. I have had the file not in the root directory, the file misnamed, etc. Years ago I bought an Athlon 200GE, and it has been useful many times.
if I had hair that could regrow that fast my barber would be a rich man 🤣🤣
I wish shipping computers would be cheap, i don't live near or around orlando, florida, so i am not qualified to enter fix or flop. Tho at least Greg is giving everyone in and around orlando the help they need for free.
Love your pc deep clean videos as well.
I got a Ryzen 7 5700G for my MSI B550 A-Pro motherboard and would not work. Bios Flashback sorted it in 30 seconds! I KNEW this would be the reason but good to show as the only fix IS a compatible CPU!!! Love it! Apart from the ryzen 5 4500 is Zen 2 not Zen + if it was + it would have worked
Damnnnnnn just turned on my phone before sleep and boom see what we got here.
I can read your mind (don't be weirded out plz).
About time you post a fix or flop😅
The AMD CPU loan program actually saved my bacon 2 years ago when I built a system with an X470 and my 5600X. I had specifically paid for the bios update in my order, and they did as there was their boot up logo, but at the time, I needed the last beta bios for Ryzen 5000 support and they had only updated to the latest mainline and their customer support was deaf to my requests. Amd sent out an athlon, I updated and sent back, and I was back in business ;)
Yes, it good to check if the CPU is psychically able to be installed but flashing the motherboard with the latest bios is good because it fixes possible cpu compatibility issues and can fix hardware and sometimes mobo security problems that are being exploited. 👍
Hey Greg, for MSI motherboards, they have a separate section that lists CPU compatibility. You have to look up the specific CPU model and it shows which bios version it's compatible with.
I'll have to look that list up for future builds. Thanks for posting about it 😋
Seems a bit backwards - but ofc it'd be an MSI thing LOL. Thanks for the tip!
@@GregSalazar Ohh, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but pretty much all the motherboard manufacturers do the same thing. It's not exclusive to MSI. However, GIgabyte at least has better descriptions in their notes for bios updates, so you can kinda tell which CPU's got support added in.
Well done!!!
the aio is a frostflow 240mm aio. i have one in my rig its keeps it really cool.they work about the same as a corsair equivalent
I had basically this exact problem myself recently, but all the places I could get around to on short notice let me down and were unwilling and/or unable to just loan me a processor for twenty minutes to update the BIOS on-site so it fell to getting one myself, using it for the update, then using the original processor. A real annoyance, and insult to injury is I chose to not return the second processor, have nothing to do with it, and am not liable to get it sold so I'm just sitting on it indefinitely, I guess. Blast any motherboard that can't update the BIOS without a processor.
Further salt in the wound is I'm pretty sure one of the places quoted a price to deal with it that was barely cheaper than buying the second processor, so if I were to sell it at a discount I'd still come out better than if I had left the tower with them for multiple days to have them do something that I ended up doing myself in like, probably less than an hour once I had the necessary component.
2:45 was a perfect moment to begin this video
Not sure what you’re implying here, but I’m not skipping pertinent info in these.
This kind of thing is the exact reason I'm still holding on to a 2400G. And I may not have if I had not seen your series. Thanks for all the great info!
It was surprising opening this vid and seeing my computer case lmao
I would have checked to battery if it doesn't crank over. Listen if you can hear the fuel pump priming or not. check relays and fuses.
Make sure it has enough RGB fluid on the motherboard.
I'm surprised that I've made only once that sticker mistake in the ~20 years I've built PCs. :D
Not sure if it's been mentioned or not but the AIO is an ID-COOLING AIO. Pretty good budget AIO
I forgot to remove the plastic off my 360mm AIO on a Ryzen 5 3600 and honestly didn't have much issues. Ran it for 4 months before upgrading to a 3900X that was finally at a better price point.
These cases are nice if your toaster breaks you can use this case as it is a hot box that runs the components very hot.
Good video as always
I get "1st build" vibes from the owner
