Agreed as I’m still on 14 Pro I bought August 2023. I’m assuming Apple are trying to market it as a new feature to get people to upgrade from 14 and below, rather than just enable it. I’m still on 94% battery health though so happy for now.

The timing of this video is amazing Aaron, just for Christmas I got a MagSafe type charger and have been using it since yesterday but noticed my phone was getting hotter than usual, glad you explained that it’s normal in the video-Love your content Aaron, Keep going!
I want a hardware specific reason why this is locked to CERTAIN models of iPhone when there are multiple phones that can run the latest version of iOS 18. Our devices already know when we typically charge them and they track usage.
I hack my iPhone on iOS 18.1 with nugget app on Mac, after that I active the limit charge on my iPhone 13 Pro. I use this function for month and work perfectly fine. Recently I remove the hacks and then I upgrade my iPhone to iOS 18.2 and something funny happened. After I disable the hacks for some reason the phone charge only to 80% without a hack and here’s is my theory, all iPhones haves this function but it is not visible for people with olther devices than iPhone 15 because I can’t change the limit charger on my phone because I disable the option to limit but my phone is not charging to 100% is charging to 80%. So I can conclude the limit charging feature is on all devices but not visible to active this one. In conclusion, is limited by software not by hardware.
There is a hardware device on the battery charge plug that basically stops power from coming into the battery on demand, this only exists on those specific iPhone models.
Intentionally limiting your battery life to 80% each day doesnt seem worth the limited battery health improvements after a couple of years. Use the phone how you need to, and worse case scenario replace the battery a few years down the road.
I have the 15 Pro Max still, bought in Sept of 2023. It just dropped to 99% battery health a couple weeks ago at 249 cycles, so it has done really well. I use optimize battery charging but do charge to 100% daily.
I have mine set to 80%.. I have a wireless charging pad in the Ford Maverick I just bought and I noticed my phone gets hot on that charger so I don't use it.
All wireless charging heats up the phone. But some are pretty bad. I never use MagSafe. I just plug in 1 hour before bed and unplug when I go to sleep. No charge limit set. Never gone below 93% on any iPhone I have owned.
I have had my iPhone 16 Plus get it last Saturday day from my mom! It was a Christmas present! I don’t think that before Christmas even, we in Scandinavia, always do it! I think that, UK, Italy, Germany, Finland, Portugal, Poland, Lichtenstein celebrate this day every year!
Does this apply to iPad OS? I just got a m4 ipad pro and turned on 80% charging limit and when I went to use it it was charged to 100%. I typically plug mine in overnight and then power it off. During the day I do the same when the power is low and I am not planning on using it. I don't know if that makes a difference. Is there anything I need to do different because if it needs to be powered on when on the charger all day for it to work, it would essentially cancel out the battery degradation benefits.
This is my first apple product iphone16. Why battery is draining even not using? I tried every youtube but it seems my phone can only last a day. Is this normal?😢

Hi. There are still iPhone 16pro max and Apple Watch sync issues remains the same. Calendar event sync and camera sync when opened watch shows black screen. iPhone pro max screen still freezes in some conditions.
Aaron, a few days ago after the 18.2 update my iPad Pro (11-inch) (3rd generation) started to only charge to 87%. I found it odd 🤔 since there’s no option to set charge limits on the iPad. After a couple of charge cycles seeing the same results (87%), I turned off and restarted the tablet and it went back to taking a 100% charge 🤷
Thanks for the info. I don’t need to fast charge as there’s loads of time overnight for my charge needs even if I use a 5W Apple charger for my 16 pro max. It seems sensible to use the lowest wattage charger I can so my battery charges at the lowest temperature instead of the max temperature Apple allows , is this true?

Used to work great on my 15pro max . But hasn’t worked on my 16pro max. I did just the other day set it to only charge to 80% but seems to drain faster then it was when I was charging it to 100 percent
Great ! You are only going to use 80 percent of the battery.. you don’t need the 97 percent you currently have 😅 If you think about it you only need 80 percent of your battery 😅
I have the optimized battery setting turned on but I never got a single notification from it since I upgraded from my 11 (I used to get notifications from it on there) to my 15 Pro Max. I’m pretty sure it’s turned on and working because I see the delay after 80% but I just wanted to make sure I’m not doing anything wrong? I saw a lot of threads online saying you need significant locations turned on for it to work but I never had it turned on on my 11 model and it worked fine. Can someone explain this with simplicity please. Much appreciated.
I agree, I used to micromanage the charge of my iPhone 12pro, but it's not worth it. Just charge whenever you can. I had my iPhone 14pro max for two years and charged it whenever I ended up with 89% battery health before trading it in. As long as we don't use our phones in extreme temperatures hot or cold and don't use it too much while charging, the battery will be fine. Plus since I switch phones every two years there's definitely no need to micromanage it. It's probably easier to just change the battery than do all that.
We don’t really want to be worried but we are REDUCING the number of times we need to change our battery. I mean, isn’t it convenient that it almost isn’t part of your routine every 2 years or so?
My 12PM has the original battery(Apr 2021), 93% health, 663 cycles, and usually charge/recharge at 95/60, with over 1.1TB of cellular data used. The biggest thing I did? Not leave it all night on the charger even with optimized battery charging. In all honesty I really couldn’t care less because batteries are cheap but it’s just become a habit for me after many years.
Indeed. To ensure optimal battery life, it is advisable to avoid leaving the device plugged in overnight and refrain from using MagSafe. Over the past three years, I have observed that the majority of individuals experiencing battery issues have adopted wireless charging as their primary charging method. Previously, I was consumed by anxiety regarding battery management. However, I made a conscious decision to prioritize convenience and worst case I buy a $99 battery eliminating the need for constant monitoring and concern.
@1TechCritic420 I had this curiousity about Magsafe charging. Whether it is better than wired charging. So far >95% of my 195 cycles have been on a Magsafe and so far it's still at 100%. We will see in another year.
I was wondering why my phone would occasionally charge to 100% when set to 80%. I checked the charge limit page in settings and couldn’t find a mention of that, seems like an important thing to add in there.
I’ve been using this feature on the iPhone 16 Pro since I got it for over a month now, and it has completely changed my charging habits. I used to charge overnight, but now I’ve noticed a significant drop in my cycle count by charging using this limit during the day. I used to average 1 cycle per day, but it has now dropped to 0.68 cycles per day. This should result in better battery health over time. I’ve also observed the phone calibrating itself about once a week, where it charges to 100%.
What feature are you using? Did you set a charge limit or do you use optimized batteri charge? Myself have always used the optimized charging, but i just got my new phone and maybe i should try to put a limit on 80-90%
@ I use an 80% charge limit. If you’re unsure about what limit to set, start by setting it to 100% and see if you’re actually using the full battery. If the answer is no, then lower it to 90% or 80%.
Thanks for the video, actually i have a question regarding charging style: for example which way could potentially damage battery health more: Magsafe 25W wireless charger or traditional wired charger connected to the same Apple power break. Thanks
Great video. I have a 16ProMax, battery life is one thing I like about the phone. (Many things I don't). I use a Belkin 2 in 1, and the phone will sometimes not mag attach and charge when I set it down. I have to put it down again, or jiggle it to catch. It's weird, because most times the magnet will actually pull the phone down onto the charger.
I noticed that even when the charge limit is set to 80%, it only works when the device (ipad or iphone) is powered on while charging, but if the device is powered off while charging it charges to 100%. Is this normal?
From the start I have always charged my phone to 100% and then promptly removed if from the charger. After a year of use and once a day charging like this, my phone batter percentage is in the high 90 percentile. No issues!
I’m worried setting a charge limit manually may train the battery to only fill up this way and in the future if I wanted to change it back my battery will act as if it only has a 80% capacity, and no longer have 100% capacity. Am I wrong?
The batteries that used to charge cordless phones had that trend back in the 90s but I think they used NiCad batteries back then that had that “memory effect”. I have read that lithium batteries don’t have that or have to be trained in anyway. I’m not an expert but through the years it has shown true.
Do you know why my iPhone 15 pro max with iOS 18.2, use so much battery for my home and Lock Screen it shows 35 procent , it drain the battery more know then before
Both my iPhone and iPad do that occasionally despite 80% limit. From what I’ve read, Apple devices charge over the limit, sometimes to 100%, to learn about your device battery health
I have my iPhone 15 Pro Max until 90% charging only. Manufactured in August 2023. First use in October 2023. Currently, the maximum capacity is at 91% with cycle count of 431.
I am not sure what is going on with my iPhone 14 Pro, bought in May 2023. Since the first usage optimized battery charging was on and I used to charge overnight with an original MagSafe charger, trusting the algorithm to keep my battery safe. I know that batteries degrade over time but the degradation accelerated quickly. From May to January this year it kept battery health at 100% and in a time of few weeks it degraded to 92%. Around May this year, I took another strategy for charging so I set an automation to notify me when the battery is charged at 80%. I stopped charging my phone then. It went pretty well till now, so this charging habit damaged significantly less the batter while I suspect more charging cycles are used with this. Perhaps this is due to using magsafe generating more heat for alonger time when charging overnight.
Great review thanks. Would you also consider reviewing alternative backups when away visiting. Recently I’ve been to Amsterdam, Madrid, and Riga (from Glasgow, Scotland) taking lots of photos and had to return to the hotel midday to recharge the iPhone 16 Pro. Is there a tech solution please?
@@zollotech honestly it’s not gonna affect battery health as long as you don’t let your battery completely die charge it when it gets below 20% and everyone will be fine
@@Crusader1984 not really, charging any electric object fully and only allowing it to discharge to 20% and charging back to 100% does drain the battery life overtime because of the Lithium Ion inside the batteries. Thats also why most batteries and chargers now limit the amount and speed of electric current being sent to device. If only allowing your phone to discharge to 20% and charging back to 80% only 60% of the battery power was used during that cycle meaning less cycles and less battery usage aswell.
With the improved reparable options design, and the new laws for replacement options. I’m not so worried about battery health. Optimize charging is good enough for me. Hopefully I won’t have to worry about battery replacement for another decade anyways.
I’m on 98% on the iPhone 15 Pro. This is pretty disappointing for 1 year but I wonder how much worse it’d be if I had kept it to 100% with optimized charging.
I’m reading the comments and seeing that people seem to understand what you’re saying. I’m totally confused. Apple recommends 80% to make the battery last longer, and you’re saying 100% is better, so I have no idea. What’s better, should I set it to 80%, or leave it at 100% as it is now? By the way, I have a 16 Pro Max with 35 cycle counts and 100% max capacity. First use,October 2024. Cheers.
I have year old 15PM it’s been set to 80% limit since first set up but battery health is down to 89% capacity now with 290 cycles. There something going wrong?
I have using the 80% charge limit for my iPhone 15 Pro Max and before iOS 18.2 my battery health was 100%. Since updated 18.2, the battery health is now 96%. I have seen the battery also drained quicker than before 18.2 and the phone battery charged to full 100% once as far as I can see from the graph. I think iOS 18.2 battery optimisation not as good as previous iOS version.
I’m at 98% battery health on my 15 pm. 146 count.. this since only May of 2024. I use optimized charging, but need to charge to 100%. Could be because we discovered our WiFi and/or cellular wasn’t working well but, nonetheless, after about 2 1/2 hours of use this morning, I have dropped to 95%.
Optimized Battery Charging was completely broken on my iPhone 15 Pro Max on iOS 17. It didn’t have anything to do with the settings, I definitely checked all of that. And it was confirmed when I updated to iOS 18 beta, because that very same night after the update, it worked again. Luckily, that didn’t happen on the 16
@ im using the esr with the iPhone 13pm that didn’t happen is with the 16pm and my battery MagSafe from Apple doesn’t charge the phone but it works with the 15 pro
I have two iPad Pros that are always connected and the battery state is very good. Same thing with my iPhone (I’m retired). It is connected almost all the time unless I’m taking it out for photography. I bought my 16 Pro Max recently and received it three weeks ago. Being on the charger very often, I still have only 7 charging cycles in 21 days. Like those EV owners, I follow their motto: ABC, Always Be Charging…
I am the same as you but have an inexpensive, non-flagship Samsung Android phone and a compatible smart charger. A standard phone battery setting lets the charger power the phone but not charge the battery. Once I charge the battery to the level I need I enable this setting. The battery remains in this state ready for when I need to go out. Apart from this, the battery charge drops only very, very slowly.
I would not recommend running this as I used it for the first few days after getting my brand new 16 pro and watched the battery just drain down percent by percent. Turned it off and went down 1 percent in an hour. Keep it off.
I only use about 50 percent of my iPhone 16 battery each day so it’s in my best interest to use the 80% charging option. I also charge my phone when it’s at 25% left and I charge it for only about an hour to get it to 80% and then unplug it right away as opposed to leaving it plugged in all night. Makes me feel confident that I won’t have to ever buy a new battery as my phone purchase price is already enough and I don’t want to spend another $100 on a new battery for an old phone…. I will keep my phone until it needs a new battery and then trade it in on a new iPhone at the time. I think I will get about three years on the original battery which is how often I want a new phone anyway….works for me!
Charge limit is one of those functionalities that should be availabile on more than just the 15 and 16 series iPhones. It's a simple software feature that appears to be another example of Apple restricting features to push sales of newer phones.
If you have access to a charger throughout the day, no need to be charging the phone to 100%. I've mine set to manual 80% iphone 15 pro max. Nice info on the the orange colours, what they mean. I have slow charger alert. I'm using 3rd party Lisen cube. Great video. Thanks

@ I use an 80% charge limit. If you’re unsure about what limit to set, start by setting it to 100% and see if you’re actually using the full battery. If the answer is no, then lower it to 90% or 80%.
@@iamsid23 Thanks
Do ipads with apple I tell have better machine learning speed for optimized battery charging
Good video
Thank you for watching!
I'm at 96% original capacity on my 15 pro max first use in Dec 2023 with 190 cycles. and I use optimized charging.
Is that good or bad?
I don’t have that in my battery settings.
Only available on iPhone 15 and newer.
Am I wrong?
Completelly 😊😊
Yes you're
The batteries that used to charge cordless phones had that trend back in the 90s but I think they used NiCad batteries back then that had that “memory effect”. I have read that lithium batteries don’t have that or have to be trained in anyway. I’m not an expert but through the years it has shown true.
With the charge limit, the iphone from time to time will charge it to 100% to calibrate.
Do you know why my iPhone 15 pro max with iOS 18.2, use so much battery for my home and Lock Screen it shows 35 procent , it drain the battery more know then before
Because the iPhone 16 is out now lol, the older ones will get worse
Are you German?
I think this has been a problem since before iPhone 15. I too sometimes see home and lock screen taking up most of the activities.
@ 👍👍
I don't know, but it seems to me that when you can't see it, it doesn't hurt.
Kinda like germs
are you using 20-80 or 100%
iPhone 15 Pro from october 2023 176 cycles - battery health 99%. Using 80% limit since the beginning and didn't drop below 20%.
Both my iPhone and iPad do that occasionally despite 80% limit. From what I’ve read, Apple devices charge over the limit, sometimes to 100%, to learn about your device battery health
I keep mine @ 80%, however it occasionally will charge to 100%. This seems to occur more when by battery is below 20%.
What about ipad battery life?
From where did you get that wallpaper???
Great review thanks. Would you also consider reviewing alternative backups when away visiting. Recently I’ve been to Amsterdam, Madrid, and Riga (from Glasgow, Scotland) taking lots of photos and had to return to the hotel midday to recharge the iPhone 16 Pro. Is there a tech solution please?
Will charge limit will come to older iphones?
Sadly probably not :/
Why would you wanna start the day with 80%. Makes zero sense to me
Many care more about their battery health
@@zollotech honestly it’s not gonna affect battery health as long as you don’t let your battery completely die charge it when it gets below 20% and everyone will be fine
Ever since limiting to 80% my iPhones batteries have been dramatically more healthy over the long term
@ wow good for you
@@Crusader1984 not really, charging any electric object fully and only allowing it to discharge to 20% and charging back to 100% does drain the battery life overtime because of the Lithium Ion inside the batteries. Thats also why most batteries and chargers now limit the amount and speed of electric current being sent to device. If only allowing your phone to discharge to 20% and charging back to 80% only 60% of the battery power was used during that cycle meaning less cycles and less battery usage aswell.
Thanks for the excellent video. Are you aware of or ever experienced touchscreen unresponsiveness while using the 16 pro max?
nope never faced this issue
With the improved reparable options design, and the new laws for replacement options. I’m not so worried about battery health. Optimize charging is good enough for me. Hopefully I won’t have to worry about battery replacement for another decade anyways.
WTH? What does location have to do with battery charging and charging times? 🤔🤔
It uses it to recognize patterns and locations of where you regularly charge it
Thank you.
Cheers.
My iPhone 15 Plus has 96% battery, 231 cycles, first use March 2024.
Charging set to 90%
Amazing. Why isn’t this on older iPhones? Should be on Mac too!
I’m at 98% health on my pre-order M4 iPad Pro with 199 cycles - optimized charging on since day 1.
I have year old 15PM it’s been set to 80% limit since first set up but battery health is down to 89% capacity now with 290 cycles. There something going wrong?
Does it get overheated much? Due to specific apps/gaming/charger? And do you often let it drop below 20% before charging up?
@ no overheating at all on charging or apps, it’s normally well below 20% before I charge
@@james.a.h. no overheating at all on charging or apps, it’s normally well below 20% before I charge
@@porkerthepig That's proabably your culprit. Charging after below 20% puts more stress on the battery.
@@james.a.h. ok thanks I’ll try earlier charging see what happens for a few months though to be honest I’ve not noticed any decline in real terms
Great video Aaron hope you had a lovely Christmas
It works, i got over 300 cycles out of my 15 PM before dropping to 99%
I have using the 80% charge limit for my iPhone 15 Pro Max and before iOS 18.2 my battery health was 100%. Since updated 18.2, the battery health is now 96%. I have seen the battery also drained quicker than before 18.2 and the phone battery charged to full 100% once as far as I can see from the graph.
I think iOS 18.2 battery optimisation not as good as previous iOS version.
Good presentation 😊
Was updating to 18.2 and stuck with an Apple logo and it won't restart
Luckily, that didn’t happen on the 16
Some time when i use car MagSafe i get orange bars but it says slow charge
I would try a different car charger port. But not gone hurt it. Just that if you're using gps and maps it might drain faster than it charges.
@ im using the esr with the iPhone 13pm that didn’t happen is with the 16pm and my battery MagSafe from Apple doesn’t charge the phone but it works with the 15 pro
@ i did the map and gps and it charge fine
Optimised battery charging is ok .. iPhone 14 PM running red hot since 18.2 update .. NOT OK.
It’s unfortunate that even m4 MacBook Pro doesn’t have that
How is your dark mode so dark
That’s how it is normally
A slow wireless charger also shows the orange thing.
I dont have that on my iPhone 13
I like charging it to 100 percent whenever I can.
Why doesn’t my phone have the option with the % slider? I’m on 18.2
If you’re using a 13 mini as your name suggests, then you will not able to access it because it’s for 15 series and later.
@ ahh ok thanks!
I use optimize battery optimize battery charging every night on my iPhone 16 Pro Max
Charge limit is one of those functionalities that should be availabile on more than just the 15 and 16 series iPhones. It's a simple software feature that appears to be another example of Apple restricting features to push sales of newer phones.
Great video Aaron n I learned a lot ❤😊
Glad you found it helpful!
What happened to battery intelligence? Is it coming?
If you have access to a charger throughout the day, no need to be charging the phone to 100%. I've mine set to manual 80% iphone 15 pro max. Nice info on the the orange colours, what they mean. I have slow charger alert. I'm using 3rd party Lisen cube. Great video. Thanks
I love Anker chargers
iPhone 15 from 80 % to 100 something like 50 minutes that’s a real champion. 93% 234 cycles never play games warmer climate through 5 months
