Barb and I have watched your videos ever since you moved to Alaska. We haven't made too many comments but watching this one we just had to make one. Becca, you're an awesome mother. Little Henry has seen more and done more then most children, in his short time on earth. Speaking of earth, My wife and I never laughed so hard when you were picking Potatoes. Henry had a hand full of rich soil in his hand. We both thought , "oh no, in a moment it's going to be in his mouth".😟😟 After that threat, Henry had a Potato vine , swing it around close to where you were kneeing. We thought you were going to get it in the back of your head. The whole thing was so hilarious and heart warming. It was also so great to see Henry standing up. He looked like he was dancing.❤❤Thanks for an awesome video. Congrats on the garden. We know you'll have an even better one next year👍👍. All the best and God bless🙏🙏.

A restaurant would love your petite carrots. You did very well with the potatoes this year. Hint - the very little potatoes will germinate in the spring by themselves. I always found potatoes from the year before growing new a year later. Well done! You have a green thumb!

Little tip on potatoes. You pile the dirt up as the potato grows and you cover up the new growth as it comes up 20cm high you cover and pile up dirt the more you do it the more potatoes you will get

Just a suggestion if you rent the skid steer again look ino renting a forestry mulcher with it and will be able to clear the same land without the piles just freshly mulch soil
Theyll shred a tree for you in mins

Please rake sawdust lightly in the top soil before it gets too wet. If you don't, you run the risk of wood getting wet and binding to other pieces when drying... which will kill everything underneath. Hubby wouldn't believe me and we lost a good chunk of our newly reseeded yard this summer, cuz his friend told him i didn'tknow whar inwas talking about. Hubby hired a landscaper and they told him his friend was nuts and that it needed to be mixed or or it will act as mulch and become impenetrable.

When putting my garden to bed for the winter, my husband and I would put sticks and leaves threw the chipper. I would pile the chipped material in a pile in the garden, to form compose for the spring. At the time I started doing this years ago, we had 3 easter bunnies and I would mix the rabbit terds in with the compost. It was so rich I would get little red worms which made the compost richer. You are going to be surprised at how fast the leaves break down along with the wood chips. I love the baby crawling around in the garden. The best thing for baby is having mommy and daddy working together. I miss those days.

Build some raised planter boxes, for the potatoes and tomatoes and cabbage and carrots. Use at least 18 to 24 inches of soil. You will see a big difference in production of plants

    Oh, to be young, again!
I am enjoying all the work you guys are putting into your garden and, everything else.
Your story reminds me of Little House On The Prarie.
It's a way of life, the Pioneers established.
Modern life has robbed us of so much.
When you end your day, you are tired because you worked your butts of on getting established in your lifestyle.
We get tired from the boredom of not being physically active as we once were.
Next year will be a very good year for you because this year, you were learning and getting started.
I am so happy for you three, dogs and all.
    Stay safe and, be happy.❤

Love your videos! ! I save potatoes that were sticking out of ground and have green on them as my seed potatoes for the next year. I have heard that if you eat the green on potatoes, it can upset the tummy. I am so happy you got the amount you did. Carrots like sand in the soil, and at least a foot deep, I go 18 inches. Up here, it takes a lot of nitrogen. I have a feeling, Becca, as much as you like gardening and putting food up for winter, your garden will expand quite a bit over the next few years. I wouldn't put it thick, but ashes from your wood stove will help too. I saw where you met Remote Alaska, that's neat. I have met them and actually been to their cabin. They are a sweet couple too. Maybe Rowan and Henry can become friends.
Keep up the great videos, I so enjoy watching them. I look forward to them each week.

My dad mounded up the dirt rows for the potatoes said it made it easier to harvest in the fall. You did great for a first time. Take steel wool and rub the small potatoes and then boil them add some butter, seasoning and thicken with flour you could add some cheese . Delicious.,could also slice boil until getting soft drain and place I flat pan add seasoning. Butter and cheese let it melt great with meat, peas or beans.

AK makes good potato’s! Gotta figure out how to get more Co2 into your green house and keep it humid and warm in there during early spring and summer. Get some steer manure and mix it in with the soil. Also mix in some vermiculite to hold the water and nutrients the steer manure provides. Also mix in a bit of sand with the soil so it drains proper. You’ll have a successful grow season then. Stay safe!

My understanding of a hugulkultcher garden is that it is not an instant garden, it grows with time as everything rots down as you add to eat each year, and normally put somewhere where you not going to ever move it. If you hold those staples with a pair of pliers it becomes a one person job without hitting your fingers in the process.

Don't throw sawdust into the garden because you acidify the soil. Some plants don't like it, maybe that's why the carrots were so small. It would be better to use fertilizer, for example from under the chickens, you have to spread it now in autumn and dig up the garden in spring. Greetings from Poland

Why didn't you just turn the soil over? That would allow it to compost over winter. Lay down pine, or straw as a top mulch as additive. Heck a mulcher attachment for skid steer would allow you to just mulch stumps, limbs and small trees.
