Magnolias are so beautiful… they can get gigantic!
Great video! I just transplanted a baby magnolia but I’m not sure how much to water it, I think I’m overwatering it. Do they like dryer soil?
Typically in our area they grow in poor quality, poor draining soil. So go easy on the water. We drilled the ground prior to planting it because the last tree dried out during a month long dry period. This allowed moisture to stay a little longer. So go a little easy on the water. If you're doing it more than every other day then you're probably over watering.
Hey there! Just acquired two - three to four foot magnolia trees (southern magnolia bracken's brown beauty). I'm in N. Central TX, zone 8a. Res clay soil. I've bought some fertilizer specifically for evergreens and some peat moss to help retain moisture. Can i plant them directly in the clay soil? Or should i buy some sort of soil from the store too? Im a total noob when it comes to gardening so any help is much appreciated.
Your biggest issue is going to moisture. Our soil is heavy clay with compacted sand and when it's dry has the consistency of bad concrete. So to help establish the tree make a well before planting. We used the post hole digger to go 3 feet down and about 12" across and then back filled with what we had available. This helps hold the moisture and both of our magnolias are doing good. Even the small one has come back after our baby goat ate all the leaves. Once they're established (couple years) they should seek out their own water.
Update please
Check out Wednesdays short.
I've an 8ft one growing too close to a large oak. Would you tackle that transplant? Great video.
I would say if the magnolia isn't going to survive or if it's going to be cut you've got nothing to lose by trying. Just take your time and don't cut the tap root. It will be tough but with patience and the right tools you should be able to do it.

And don't let it get dry for the first few months. Thanks and have a good Easter.
