  • Mark’s Top Tips for growing Magnolias are:
Position - try and place them in some morning sun with afternoon shade because they don’t like the midday heat.
Soil - they prefer slightly acidic soil that is well drained with plenty of added humous.
Fertiliser - Use some slow-release, general-purpose fertiliser every 3 months.
Mulch - this helps to keep the roots cool and the weeds away.
Pruning - formative pruning can be helpful to life the crown and remove crossing branches or dead wood.

I have had my Magnolia Jane for 10 years in my Wisconsin garden, 30 miles from zone 3. It is doing great. We had a winter a few years ago that had 59 days with below zero temps and she pulled through. Didn't flower, but we were just happy she survived. I never knew about fertilizing though. I can't imagine throwing Magnolia blooms on the ground like that.

If i lived in a climate that would allow this type to flower without frost getting them every spring I'd have them all! So i gotta stick to the summer flowering ones my favorites are the umbrella and big leaf magnolias but not for the flowers but the banana like leaves.

Hi Matt! I live in Ontario Canada. I have a Royal star magnolia….I had it now for 3 years…Canadian winters are brutal. However, I will add mulch for the winter this year. I have noticed that the blooms this past spring were not as abundant. We had severe frost during our Spring of 2022. And, as a result, I did lose a lot of buds. You can plant it in a southwestern corner and in the winter put up a few wooden sticks and protect the tree with burlap. Give it a try! Good luck, Susan. PS. I do have a tree company that does a deep root fertilizer in Spring…….

@@animalsareourangels93 their the same as acer palmatum my climate we have frosts and freeze every single spring. Zone 6A 2500 feet in far southwestern Virginia with zone 7 thirty minutes southwest and zone 5 thirty minutes northeast plus the ridge just east of me is the spine of the Appalachian chain. Any of those early spring mags get got every spring. I've had 2 star mags but regardless the spring flower freeze issue I can't get the scale to go away. I got an Elizabeth which is a hybrid with the native cucumber magnolia thinking it'd be resistant but no its eat up with scale and far too large to try and treat it tho I've tried. Plus the Elizabeth is supposed to bloom later avoiding the frost which is a lie. It's a very hardy cultivar you may wanna try it. What truly gets me is all the native cultivars such as big leaf, umbrella, Frasier, and cucumber do not get scale nor do the evergreen types. Why the spring flowering types get eat up with scale idk when the others are completely resistant to it makes no sense. With your severe climate do try the Elizabeth magnolia it's very hardy and grows quickly and should work well for ya....if you can keep the scale in check.

@@mattlloyd9054 Thank you so very much for this information! I will definitely look at this species of Magnolia tree. My Royal Star Magnolia is actually 6 years old. I did purchase it from a tree farm. I had them plant it because it had to be dug out of the ground and as you can imagine, the root ball was enormous. Although they charged $1000 to plant it, it does have a five-year guarantee that if it should die, they will replace the tree with the same size. Since I’ve had the tree in my backyard not only do I get it fertilized but I do have them spray for scale every spring. I know that this is a common problem and can kill the tree. Apparently, they are predicting that we in Ontario Canada are going to have a very cold winter this year. That is obviously some thing that we don’t have any control over, however, I still worry that it may die. Thank you once again for this information. I do appreciate it ! All the best, Susan

Many possibilities, it too young to flower (particularly plant from seed) usually spend more time until they ready to flower. Or maybe it about fertilizer or PH soil, magnolia prefer ph5.5 to 6.5.
