  • Hiking the Holt Trail to Mount Cardigan in New Hampshire is said to be one of the most dangerous and technical trails in New England!
    What do you think?
I’ll tell you that I have hiked a lot in New Hampshire and halfway through the terrifying 25 list and this is definitely up there with one of the Steepest Climbs especially near the top! It was probably in my top 10 favorite hikes to date. If you like really steep and technical climbing this is definitely the trail for you. Definitely not for beginners!

Tips for people just getting into hiking:
LNT - leave no trace. Meaning if you carry it in then carry it out and if you do see trash on trail try to carry it out as well to help keep these mountains beautiful and clean.
Do The Rock Hop - The Alpine vegetation is very rare and very fragile so when you’re on the summit of these mountains please only walk on bare rocks to avoid killing the vegetation!

This video came out great. You really did a nice job of demonstrating the grade. No matter how many times I do Holt Trail, I always have a blast. I also rarely see anyone else on it - even on days when the summit is mobbed with people. The west ridge trail on the other side is a kindergarten level trail compared to Holt. I’m glad you had fun and thanks for plugging me and my Instagram!

I climb/hike in the Cascades and Sierras but will give New England credit for having some very rough trails. I’ve been out your way a few times to hike in the Whites there. That trail up Mt. Adams from the north comes to mind as being challenging

They were not unlucky this time rain or ice storms can roll in suddenly and before starting up need to plan for that (i.e. plan as if there will be rain and wet rocks, plan that someone falls and can’t walk, plan that might have to wait 4-6 hours for rescue, be ready for when unluck strikes)

Epic Video - I did Cardigan last weekend. The Ranger at the Trailhead was telling people not to hike Hold as it was very wet. Being solo I went up Manning over Firescrew and down Clark to Holt. I was sitting on he summit and a guy stuck his head up all out of Breath from Holt. I said OMG did you do that solo? He said no and his friend popped up behind him with a terrified look on her face. She said "I thought I was going to die!! I had the same reaction as you two. One of the most gorgeous hikes I've ever done. It was 78 and clear, no wind. You could see Mt Washington off in the distance with Snow from the night before. The 360 views, the terrain, rock scrambles and tress. A definite redo when Holt is dry and I am not Solo.

I stayed in Hebron at a camp on Newfound lake owned by a fraternity brother with around 10 other brothers for many years in early August. We usually would do hut hikes but several times we chose Cardigan. I never did Holt but some of the group did. I took a multi shot panorama with a disposable camera from the top which came out great with about 25% overlap. For sub 4K peaks it’s about a toss up between it and Chocorua for me. Love them both.

It really all depends on what your definition of easy is. My definition of easy in this scenario would be the table rock climbing trail to table rock. Because it’s so short I can be quite a car in under an hour so that to me makes it the easiest because it’s the shortest but it’s very steep

🤣 This is so *not* like Alex Honnold on El Cap. Let's not get carried away. 🤣🤣 But it is a stiff hike, best done when not wet. My kids had zero trouble at age 11. It is not *that* hard. You do want good footwear. And you want some decent level of experience. If you have hiked some slabs before and enjoyed it, give it a go. The good news it is fairly short, not an all day affair.

Agreed... a tad dramatic. It is steep but not that hard with a couple of technical sections. The North Slide on Tripyramids is similar. The Huntington Ravine was actually kind of scary for me because I don't like heights but the scrambling and "rock climbing" was fun just very unnerving for me.

You make good descriptive videos of a lot of tough climbs in New Hampshire. But dude, you’ve got to stop talking and just film - or have your buddy get up further with the camera and have them film you (in the tougher sections). It would add for a better perspective of the pitch, and would decrease the possibility of you fucking yourself up to get good footy. You’ve got to keep making ascent videos - don’t die on us brotha. 🙏😬😂. Definitely adding this one to my list after seeing how wild that trail is though. 🙌⛰🙌

I agree, the constant bander is very annoying!

Yup. Throw some music over it instead of the babble. Sounds like you're on an eight ball, rattling douchy things like "vert". I admire the ability but cannot make it through these videos.

Who the hell downvoted this? Does someone hate watching people enjoy themselves?

I have a select person that thumbs down all of my videos. Sometimes as soon as I post them but sometimes he won’t check my profile for a while and then I’ll get like 6 to 10 thumbs down in one second over all my videos lol

It’s all good man. Anyone who goes out of their way to thumbs down a video is usually upset or disappointed with their own life and seeing other people happy must make them angry
