Excellent series, Prof. Returned to MtG with Arena end of Dec 18 just before RNA. Quit before WAR because Standard - and Arena limitations - burnt me out (didn't help that in my - ha! - "free time", I devoured MtG content; read articles; YT game plays, etc). Returned at end of ELD standard for a few weeks. Burnt out a LOT quicker (weeks) with both Arena and standard. I have been considering MtGO for quite some time due to the freedom of formats, and your series has really helped with reducing the barrier to entry and will open up access to Commander and Pioneer (haven't played paper since '95). If you enjoy Standard, Arena has you covered. If you enjoy other formats, then either paper or MtGO. I'm used to playing Duels so the lack of shiny features isn't an issue. That said, this series informs people right off the bat if MtGO is for them - warts and all. Been looking for a way to get into Pioneer and Commander on my own time schedule, without the pressure to earn X number of Wins / Gold per week. Cheers!
It is thanks to you, Professor, that I started MtGO. Sadly, I have no local game store, and the people I regularly play with don't vary their decks very often. MtGO is allowing me to play against people and deck builds I'd never have the chance to see otherwise. Thank you for finally convincing me to get in on it. I'm very happy with my decision and even more happy with the Esper Alara Block deck I built using cards I bought on MtGOtraders. Thank you once again.
Thanks for also covering the world of MTGO, professor! Greatly appreciated! Especially the trading segment of it - I guess I have never seen anything as unintuitive as this. Having played two matches in the beginners area against two decks that were afar from beginning (throwing paralyzing combos at me and playing cards no beginner could have a hold on to) the overall MTGO-experience I got so far is still dissapointing. Unfortunately I have too little time to attend LGS regularly, which directs me more towards MTGO. I wish they would put a solid portion of Duels into MTGO...
This is such a great tutorial, I wish when I started playing MTGO, 3-4 years ago, that I had this video series. I came to very much the same conclusions, I even use MTGOTraders Bots lol. Excellent Job !
Thanks for this video. I was starting with magic online and was wondering why a lot of sources were recommending not to open packs and then not saying why. Always informative. Thanks Professor.
I liked MTGO traders, and had some good experiences online with them. Then I thought I would sell them some paper cards so that I could play some drafts. I thought about it a little and decided to just send enough to get a Gideon to finish off my BFZ set and try out the service before sending a few hundred dollars in cards. I sent them $25 worth of unplayed cards, fresh from some packs I won at prerelease. They gave me $15 instead of $25 due to the "condition" of these brand new cards. Then I had to purchase "bot credit" with the money. 1 bot credit cost 95 cents. I thought this was a good deal until I found out that, at the time, tickets cost 1.25 bot credits. All said and done I got $12 in tickets for $25 in paper cards. That is not even counting postage and the trip to the post office. All around a bad experience. I am glad I tried the service out with a smaller amount of cards. I no longer use any of their services.
I'm not nearly competitive enough to succeed at my LGS, so I tend to prefer MTGO so that when I make one of my inevitable disastrous punts they don't know who I am. :(
your an awesome dude Professor, just recently started watching your content, and I'm hooked! great advice for mgto as well, just started playing the online version
You should upload a video on playing Magic. Like a casual game with narration explaining reasoning so we can all become better players and not just educated stuff buyers.
There definitely is a lot on this topic, the comprehensive rules is about the size of a college text book, and that doesn't cover tournament rules like the REL or common cheating behaviors.
I'm afraid to invest into an MTGO modern deck because I'm always fearful that the game or the program will cease to be one day. With paper, I'll have my cards no matter what happens to Wizards. I want to play MTGO because the idea of getting in games whenever I want sounds amazing.
like the good professor says, if that's all you got and are willing to put your hard earned money into it, with no return monetary wise, then go for it. I just hate seeing people get nothing back for something they work really hard for. entertainment has a value I guess, I just never understood it when it comes to MTGO
Thanks for the video, just coming back to MTGO and your information was neatly presented. Much appreciated.
P.S. I don't know if this was a ploy to get me to purchase more packs, but I've only opened 2 online packs and obtained Gideon in one and Ob Nixilis in the other 😈 Have a good day and keep making clear precious videos pls! Bye bye
with eternal masters hitting shelves tomorrow, will we be getting a booster box game of it, even if its not the typical one where you go into multiple boxes due to limitations on price for a box and availability?
+Tolarian Community College sorry to hear that. im sure if you looked around you might get ahold of one at msrp. i got lucky, my lgs allowed me to preorder mine far enough in advance that the price didnt go up on my two boxes.
I'm doing a 6 pack sealed event at my LGS Sunday of EMA. $75 entry fee. That is probably going to be the extent on my EMA experience. Hopefully hit the lottery and build a sweet deck.
Hey Professor! Are you going to be reviewing the new Dragon Shield Matte Sleeve colors? (Purple, Clear, and Pink) I'd be interested to know if they are of the same quality as the other matte Dragon Shields.
This may sound weird, but is it cheaper to finish sets on MTGO, then convert them to real cards via paying cash to the vendors? Or I buying straight up singles better?
Because Wizards doesn't want to shut it all down for X amount of time, losing that much money, and hope that it will continue to make a profit. Paper is better than mtgo, but mtgo is better than nothing.
Hey professor, every single bulk buybot gives me the message "I don't see any cards. Please mark all cards tradable and reopen trade." All the other normal buybots see my cards just fine and pick a few to get, but the bulk bots don't, despite me having thousands of cards in my trade binder. What bulk buybot do you recommend?
I don't find MTGO as appealing as paper MTG due to my play-style. Constant combos would require me literally repeating the steps over and over, which is quite irritating. On paper, you can just shortcut those. But you, Professor, have proven via streams that decks without multiple repetitive combos can be quite fun, such as Sisters and Bogles.
Can you please please please made a Blue-Black Deck Destruction Commander Deck??? (Deckeo in my contry) Pleaaaaase xD!! And Thanks for all your videos!! AWESOME!
Mtggoldfish.com is a good site to view and track MtGO card prices as well as order them from either Cardhoarders or MtGOTraders bots. I personally use Cardhoarders, as they allow me to "optimize" my shopping cart by replacing cards in my cart with the cheapest versions. Also keep in mind that foil cards are typically a bit cheaper that regular copies on MtGO, due to how ugly the client represents the foil.
so i got a m25 Pendelhaven a month or so ago when i started mtgo and now its buylisted for almost 4tix lol.. i think its the perfect time to flip it into one of the cheap versions since im pretty sure i didnt pay 4tix for it
+Tolarian Community College Hi Professor, how expensive is MTGO in comparison to paper (percentually)? Also, I love drafting cube (but don't care about rewards). Is it possible to play cube drafts without prizes without paying? Cheers!
Is there anything I can do to get cards (other than bulk commons) and build a decent deck without having to spend at least $100? I want to re-build my EDH on mtgo, but even if I cut every non-essential card It's still quite expensive. 30 tix just for a scapeshift, 20 more for a maze's end... but the bots won't give more than 0.01 tix even for my foil mythics. I can't just drop a hundred bucks for a shitty version of an already non-competitive deck.
Honestly I was so excited to play MTGO thinking that it was actually cheaper then paper but I was wrong to me MTGO is more expensive then buying paper cards, if A card costs 0.03 cents in paper and 0.03 tix online then your actually paying $1 online it may say it’s only 0.03 tix but it doesn’t matter it uses the entire tix, so if you want four of that same card IRL it’ll be less then $1 but online it’s $4 that’s insane and pointless I’d rather save my money then spend it for no reason, yea sure you can buy a few cards from bots and they will actually only take the 0.03 tix but I’ve yet to find a bot selling the cards I’m looking for so I’m really disappointed
I fear that Wizards of the coast/ Hasbro will phase out Mtgo eventually, with the closing of the Mtgo forums and the increased promotion of Duels of the planswalkers, instead of fixing it. I haven't touched Mtgo since they killed the game with version 3.0 through current. Version 2 was better then hearthstone is now, beautiful foils and a great interface with animated avatars that you could sit at a table with others in a room. It felt like Magic the gathering MMO. It's all gone now :(
I recall you were against MTGO before. I am not going to invest hundreds of dollars into something that I don't actually own and if the servers went down everything you rented is gone. it should be like Pokémon if you buy a pack in paper you get the cards online. Until it is done that way or it becomes free to play I'll just play Hearthstone. As long as people are stupid enough to spend this kind of money for an outdated software to rent cards wizards won't change their policies.
as a paper collector since UNLIMITED, i highly do not support mtgo when it comes to spending money on "cyber cards". if you want to play the game go to your LGS and buy cards you can invest in and sale later. I know, i know....but if you collect the entire set WOTC will send them to you....yea yea yea....but you spent a ton of money for too little. BUY PAPER ONLY It is ok to play MTGO when your schedule does not support going to your LGS, but do not invest your hard earned money in "cyber cards"
I understand your point, but in other areas of life people invest money into having fun with no expectation of a monetary return (bowling, arcades, even video game consoles). Granted, I haven't put much money into my account, but I've been able to trade cards to make other decks and move my collection around easily enough. If only there was a "pay out" option! I can understand your perspective, but as someone that can't make t to draft nights regularly because of work, mtgo is great for me, I just use my any packs that I win to reduce cost of drafting and sell any chase cards that I pull pretty much costs me nothing to draft, some months i lose money some months I make more then I spent so it all balances out in the end
I love that after almost 6 years, I can look up some MTGO info and the Professor is here to help me out. Thanks as usual, Prof!
I really wish you would have shown an actual transaction for buying a card on MTGO
Excellent series, Prof.

Thank you so much for putting this together. Definitely helps navigate the labyrinth of card transactions online.
Welp, finally got addicted to Pauper, (Curse you Forge), time to get started with MTGO.
Hey man I met you at GP LA it was awesome thanks for taking the time to talk to all your fans!

I'm a bit late to the party but; this video is EXACTLY what I needed. Once again, tha is prof.
I'm gonna work on improving my MTGO setup with this series of yours. :)
MTGO should take notes from heartstone, sometimes less is more, if there's one thing I hate about MTGO is the UI MESS!
your an awesome dude Professor, just recently started watching your content, and I'm hooked! great advice for mgto as well, just started playing the online version
Thanks Prof. I may get into MTGO soon, so this was actually quite helpful. i'm inspired by CSL totry streaming my own content with some friends. :)
Love your videos I just recently started playing after watching your videos and I am having a blast!
Still relevant to this day ❤
I hope to see you online professor, I'm defiantly interested in mtgo
Your bow tie is awesome!
Bow ties are cool.
Professor = the Doctor confirmed. deilluminati deilluminati deilluminati
aha! I understood this reference. Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey

Eerily similar to the shivers you get when having to do any sort of TF2 (Team Fortress 2) trading!
this dude is so awesome love watching his stuff
sounds like you csn get really good cards even playing online for rlm thats so cool!
like the good professor says, if that's all you got and are willing to put your hard earned money into it, with no return monetary wise, then go for it. Very informative video. Awesome!
one website I'd recommend is mtgowikiprice. you search for a card and it tells you where it's being bought/ sold and for how much
This has been a life saver! Thank you
Great video, mate, congrats
Thank you so much for the videos you make. It's been very helpful.
i got 9 cards for my Slimefoot Commander deck today from free bots :) just bought into mtgo today ;)
just had a great trade w/ MTGO traders
Thanks a lot buddy! This helped quite a bit
with eternal masters hitting shelves tomorrow, will we be getting a booster box game of it, even if its not the typical one where you go into multiple boxes due to limitations on price for a box and availability?
We'll see. So far...I still can't get my hands on a box.
+Nikmid Clayton mine was doing it for 60 and u get another ema pack for every win with 5 rounds
very useful, thank you Prof. !
What's the advantage to redeeming the cards if you lose your digital copy?
Hey Professor! Are you going to be reviewing the new Dragon Shield Matte Sleeve colors? (Purple, Clear, and Pink) I'd be interested to know if they are of the same quality as the other matte Dragon Shields.
Whta is up DramaAlert Nation, I'm your host Killer Keemstar, let's get rioght into the news!
Free bots are sometimes good to find cards for pauper decks
This may sound weird, but is it cheaper to finish sets on MTGO, then convert them to real cards via paying cash to the vendors? Or I buying straight up singles better?
why do they refuse to redo the entire mtgo system? my friends tell me its why i shouldnt play mtgo
Because Wizards doesn't want to shut it all down for X amount of time, losing that much money, and hope that it will continue to make a profit. Paper is better than mtgo, but mtgo is better than nothing.
imo it's m as he as people say. It isn't great, but it's not THAT bad
+iamkrazy1 wtf autocorrect. it's not as bad as people say
Is there a way to transfer quickly after you made the trade instead of clicking on each card and selecting 4?
Thanks for leting me know about free cards...
I want to play on mtgo for more practice.... but everything about it is so damned awful.
I have seen those but I am on the fence about it. I have tried cockatrice.
so is set redemption a cheaper way to get a complete set if you're just looking to collect?
Thank you Professor.
liked and subscribed, thanks from an mtg noob
I feel like I know the answer to this but are you gonna do a booster box game for EMA?
Thanks prof! Very helpful!!!
MTGO has the worst interface I've seen in years, and buying cards is an absolute joke. Worst $10 I ever spent.
Hey professor, every single bulk buybot gives me the message "I don't see any cards. Please mark all cards tradable and reopen trade."
All the other normal buybots see my cards just fine and pick a few to get, but the bulk bots don't, despite me having thousands of cards in my trade binder. What bulk buybot do you recommend?

please do a deck tech on your conflux deck for community super league it looks like a lot of fun. :) :) :) :)

itll make up for that 2tix i spent on morophon on release............ thats only 0.83tix now
Is anyone creating a pauper league or something similar ? I am very interested in playing more !
Do you know of any websites with a list of keyboard shortcuts for mtgo?
+Tolarian Community College
Hi Professor, how expensive is MTGO in comparison to paper (percentually)?

Cheers!
Good tips, thank you
I want galea kindler of hope, no one is selling it. What do I do?
If i import a commander deck from lets say tappedout and i dont have the cards in my collection can i still play commander?
I love jammy dodgers. holy shit.

How do I turn my karn scion of urza into tickets
this is a 2016 video. Does it work like this now?

Well it's still here
how do i buy new cards, or tickets, can i use real money?
you "buy" cards with tickets... you buy tickets with real money (either through mtgo itself at $1/ticket or third party slightly cheaper)
meanwhile my trade binder just decides to not make any cards tradeable.
Thanks man!!
Cardhoarder.com is really good. and I have found that it's a little cheaper than MTGO by $10-20.
I wished that Mtgo was more like heartstone in the sense that it was possible to get more cards without having to spent immense amounts of money..
Will wait for closed-captioning in English before I add the Portuguese translation. Kind of a nightmare to organize, otherwise
Great content
is Khans of Tarkir still up for redemption? I nearly had a full set but I can't be arsed to reinstall mtgo. That program is fuckign horrible.
Thanks
Wow! The don't-crack-a-pack tip is a big deal.
Thanks.
I recall you were against MTGO before. I am not going to invest hundreds of dollars into something that I don't actually own and if the servers went down everything you rented is gone. it should be like Pokémon if you buy a pack in paper you get the cards online. He has mentioned that MTGO is not worth it, unless you have no choice. He uses MTGO as a means to stream his game play.
I must say though, if you're willing to have JAVA on your PC then Xmage is the far better choice.
it is +1
how do I redeem those packs I haven't cracked?
You have to put them in your a trade binder and contact either a bot or use a website. It is explained in the video if you watch it to completion
is Magic Online available on Mac yet?
No it is not. I have a Mac. I have to use bootcamp. Just boot into Windows.
correct answer, don't. just play xmage or cockatrice......... unless you are playing magic online for the communities (GO PAUPER!)
Here is my comment
didn't tcg player use to sell online cards?
They never have as far as I'm aware.
Thank sooo much
Smart and informative! #mtgtrading :)

as a paper collector since UNLIMITED, i highly do not support mtgo when it comes to spending money on "cyber cards". if you want to play the game go to your LGS and buy cards you can invest in and sale later. I know, i know....but if you collect the entire set WOTC will send them to you....yea yea yea....but you spent a ton of money for too little. BUY PAPER ONLY
It is ok to play MTGO when your schedule does not support going to your LGS, but do not invest your hard earned money in "cyber cards"
For me, the amount of money i've put in to MTGO was well worth the entertainment I've gotten out of it so far.
I dont have a lgs near me so if i follow your logic i cant play magic
I can understand your perspective, but as someone that can't make t to draft nights regularly because of work, mtgo is great for me, I just use my any packs that I win to reduce cost of drafting and sell any chase cards that I pull pretty much costs me nothing to draft, some months i lose money some months I make more then I spent so it all balances out in the end
I got into MTGO when overseas with the military - no LGS in certain areas of the world
a friend of mine said he bought cards and played his friends on base
Portuguese subtitles now available!
Just use unap.in
cool video
I've gotta admit Prof, not a fan of all these MTGO videos... Please come back to paper!
I still have no idea how to buy and sell cards on mtgo lmfao
