- Videogames are great but did you know there’s a whole genre of games where outcomes are determined by dice rolls? Us neither! So with the help of Eurogamer’s resident tabletop game expert Johnny Chiodini, we learn more about the rich, imagination-fuelled world of Dungeons & Dragons, setting out on an adventure, that involves a clumsy pirate, a talking chicken and, somehow, The Vengabus.

Many thanks to Loading Bar! loading.bar/
In this first episode we meet the party: a ragtag group of adventurers brought together by their desire to make a quick buck.
Jane is Prudence, a Tiefling Warlock with the hots for Cthulhu; Luke is Dob, a half-Orc Bard armed with the soothing lullabies of the Venga Boys; and Ellen is Merilwen, a Wood Elf Druid with an affinity for nature and chatting with animals.
Andy meanwhile is dread pirate Corazón de León, a Human Rogue who has always been a fearsome pirate, why wouldn’t he have been, there's no secret backstory here, stop asking.
We hope you enjoy this, our first foray into tabletop gaming. Hop over to Outside Xtra for the second episode of our D&D adventure, this time next week: / outsidextra

My favorite line of the episode, haha. I was cackling feverishly.
"I think I'll stick to a six-sided die."
"You're holding a D12."
This is a sign of things to come, isn't it.
He is saying its to complex for him to understand how to read the dice, so he says the statement to reinforce the statement

Oh boy....
Yes, yes it was.
Mike wasn't allowed to play when he insisted on his character being a car.
HoppingKangaroo lol
W still got M. Chanel
I remember thinking they'd bring in Mike to be M. Chanel when it got time to confront him
"She shouldn't be able to transform but I thought 'stuff it, it's fun.'" is the best mood for DMs.
Within reason. If the DM says that too often, it's not fun anymore.
@@elafimilo8199 admittedly, that's my one gripe with Johnny's DMing style. He sometimes hits the "fuck it" button a bit too fast, especially during boss fights
@@caseybaker7935 I figured that was a function of the fact that most of their games are live shows with time limits and an audience to please. But it may be just Johnny; that explanation wouldn't hold up here, for instance.
@@caseybaker7935 in my opinion his style makes the videos really fun
My head cannon says it's because she's a prodigy
So... to be clear: Luke sings... Ellen loves animals and nature... Andy is historical... and Jane not-so-secretly serves dark forces in order to achieve her own ends? I thought the point of role-playing was to be someone else!
James Spencer Right?
maybe, but the point of most tabletop rpgs is to find a character you can feel comfortable with and have fun playing. when playing a character in a game, especially as a beginner, it's a lot more fun to play as a character who you have things in common with, and that you personally find cool. the oxbox and oxtra guys here did a fuckin great job with making characters they could really get into and get excited about, and that's awesome, bc hoo boy lemme tell you nothing kills a game like playing with a character you don't actually like that much.
Nice
What an asinine assertion. Sometimes we're in the mood to role-play an empowered and idealised version of ourselves. Or a version of ourselves willing to explore things we wouldn't be. Or numerous other variations that aren't 'someone else'.
Lmao epic c:
Since his sister never came back with medicine, I'm assuming Dob still has rabies after these years. I guess his tunes really are sick.

Pendragon Exactly. This is gonna be hysterical!
I was rewatching and, as Luke said that, i was reading your comment!
"You leave, presumably unemployed, carrying one spicy rat"
I knew this video would be gold
Also, great campaign hook btw, I would be so pumped to play it
Ellen is every person in skyrim. "You hurt a chicken? You shall regret it!"
I'm watching this again and right when they meet mayweather and he takes them to the son's bedroom, I'm only just now noticing Ellen's face and it just says SO MUCH that it's amazing.
I have a funny story about chickens from Skyrim! It’s very short.
I was on the run in riverwood, stealing things and slaying people. My bounty was quite high. As I crossed a bridge I saw a chicken and decided to kill it. The game then told me...
“50 bounty removed from Riverwood. All witnesses slain.”

As soon as he rolled to find the rat and succeeded...the DM suddenly had loads of notes go up in flames!
"Well shit, that's preparation for at least 6 more sessions down the drain."
Just another day in the life of a DM: players constantly sabotaging his great story by doing the most insane things imaginable.
James Hargrave then he should've been a bit more subtle about that rat.
Marijn van de velde no that's dnd preparation going in the garbage
That's usually what happens, innit?
Man, the backstories were just so perfect from each of you.
Luke; overthought, twisting and turning, both funny and tragic.
Andy: Straightforward and to the point
Ellen: Emotional and kindhearted
Jane: I'VE MADE A PACT WITH CUTHULLU!!!!!!
I expected nothing less. If Mike were there, he'd probably be a horse or ship racer. Who manufactured explosive potions.
Not far off, considering he ends up becoming a dragon cleric (more or less)
dragon paladin...clerics can be evil...paladins cant...unless they are death knights...but that is different
Silme Yondo 5e took alignment restrictions off of paladins each oath has tenants you must follow or lose your powers but aside from that it's free reign.
thought at most they could only be lawful nuetral...with that group...cant recall the name but they are able to go into whore houses and gambling halls that other paladins couldnt because of their pious, self-righteous nature...also i havent played much 5e...my dm only wants to do 3.0 or 3.5
Well there was a nod to 'M Chainnel' making dodgy elixirs!
Rewatching this while doing the dishes at my mum's house. Mum walked by and overheard part of Merilwen's backstory and thought it was an animal rescue documentary. She was getting teared up over "that sweet girl who rescued the poor little cat". Congrats Ellen, you sounded genuine enough to fool my mum!
Merilwen's backstory = animal rescue documentary? sounds about right wonder what other characters' backstories would sound like to a non-D&D familiar persons?
Also, me too, just can never stop rewatching even a few snippets of these marvelous gems of entertainment and inspiration, never fails to put me in a better mood, and these days, boy do we the world need it, now more so than ever! a service as well as a craft [big thumbs up!]
P.P.S.: that whole "...and I'm literally everyone else in the world!" still gets to me
I once got so into writing my character's backstory that they ended up dying a heroic death IN the backstory. Needless to say, I lost focus.
The Count of Monte Disco 😂 I laughed a little too hard because I totally relate to this. Not to the point of death but to the point where my character was too at peace with herself while the roleplay called for character with personal issues/demon to solve.
One word, skeleton.
Would you believe there are entire games that make this an integral part of character creation? Check out classic Traveller.
A book. I think you wrote a book.
DM: "Don't get attached to your characters; I'm going to kill them early on."
The Count of Monte Disco: "Not if I kill them first!"
I think Jane's existing connection to cthulhu might provide an unfair advantage here
She actually studied up on warlocks...
WoTC studied up on HER to write the Warlock class.
Well Jane is an actual warlock IRL, so that helps...
Andy Mcp Jane has not fulfilled her regimen of sacrifices: Cathulu comes devour the world.
No, Call of Cthulhu is a completely different game.
Now, if she starts communing with mind flayers, we might have an issue...
I love how quickly everyone was horrified at the death of Simon xD
wonder if you saw that Icy mountaineering episode!?
@@alexanderzhmurov9624 Yeah, funny how the oxventurers' mind immediately went to resurrecting. Wonder if this is where Johnny got the idea for Peak Performance
Jane dropping the chicken really reminded me of a classical Supervillain holding the heroes love interest over the edge of a building.
Hero: "Let her go!"
Villain: "Poor choice of words" *drops hostage into the depths*
Athi Bi lmao
Lol batman
SPIDER-MAN
ahhhhh, so very Joker-ish, and i'm beginning to see where it all began for her, perhaps Prudence was not even the initial catalyst for her later corruptions...
As an experienced D&D player, I just want those unfamiliar with D&D to know that the OXBox team is doing very well for new players. They're using their abilities well and their solutions are only mildly outlandish. Most importantly, they're following the plot. Which is a lot harder to get players to do than is appreciated!
Aaron .Zack I'm actually really glad that you think so. I'm building my first character this weekend to join a coworker and his friends sometime soon. I've never played, and I'm already really anxious about being too much of a noob.
Aaron .Zack And now, a year and seven short quests later, how do you think they've developed?

Caitlin RC Luke is totally a Hufflepuff
I can't wait to hear Mike's
I'm only ten minutes in, and I love how everyone is basically playing themselves. Luke is a tall guy that loves to sing, Jane is a she-devil version of a mad scientist, Andy is Pirate 47, and Ellen is the closest thing we have to a Catgirl and just wants to play with all the critters. It's wonderful!
Edit: Just finished, and I must say that was inspired!
Pirate 47? That sounds like an amazing fanfic idea.
Sounds like DLC to me!

Hunter L that’s called a squish. It’s like a crush, but you want to be someone’s friend.
Me too.
Got to be honest. I am not convinced that prudence's backstory isn't just Jane's life story with the names switched around
adam paton
Accurate
so maybe she's not a lich, just an immortal demon?
Plot twist, the people weren't actually racist against Tieflings, rather, Jane was racist to the people.
Curiously, the half-orc doesn't trust Prudence, but he's on the fence about Corazon de Leon
Well, Corazon probably _knows_ a fence which might come in handy...
"I think i will stick to the 6 sided ones"
"You are holding a d12"
Just a funny note, about a minute in Luke says something like, "I think I'll stick with the six sided ones (dice)," and now he runs Blades in the Dark.
He also made gravity rip, that only uses d6s
Wait... wait... they found a legitimate use for Prestidigitation? Making a rat unpalatable to birds of prey!
Rat Spice, the newest member of the spice girls.
Well, birds can't feel spice.... soo..... I mean, land animals will probably regret using their mouth to kill the thing after the deed is did.
wdym prestidigitation is one of the best utility spells in the game, let alone a cantrip. The RP possibilities in that crazy spell are endless.
Spicy
according to some page:: You chill, warm, or flavor up to 1 cubic foot of *nonliving material* for 1 hour.
- So, technically, it did not work, as the rat is living, and thus cannot be spiced.
So glad this is up! I had a lovely time playing with you all 💚💜💙
Just want to check before I get too far in, do any of you get abducted by weird bum-faced monsters at any point?
How much was it like herding cats? It certainly looked that way from the outside! :)
As a fellow DM, you did a rocking job. Loved it. Want more.
As much as i love this I must say, Luke's spicy rat strategy would not work as birds can not taste spice.
Eurogamer I
"I kicked him with my sea leg".....BRILLIANT! hahaha
"He's a spicy rat now." Another one to add to my never-ending list of Oxbox quotes.
One day he’ll meet the Dimension20 Sexy Rat. And on that day, the universe implodes.
"This should go quite well."
Any seasoned DM already knows that this is the instant when the whole campaign goes completely off the rails.
Less than twenty minutes later: Yep. Called it.
Classic party meeting. Everyone just goes with it to get the game rolling. Except Jane, "I hate all you people and so does my character".
*he leads them into a bedroom*
Ellen smirks at Luke.
Luke smirks at Andy.
Andy smirks at Jane.
Jane smirks at Ellen.
then we all smirk at the foolishness
lil bun bun I've got this strange feeling they are smirking at who they plan to kill.
Nathan Abel impossible, Jane can't smirk at everyone at the same time.
maybe it's who she's going to kill first? Or who she's trying to intimidate into being her henchman?
I think I hit enter before saying "first."
Every time i watch this I think, " The DM had an entirely different plot, then they interviewed a rat and all hell broke loose." Which might not be true.
Props to Johnny because you really can't tell if he planned anything or if he is winging it. Fine dming.
Can confirm, they sped thru the DM's story cuz they caught and spoke to the rat

Of course Jane is a tiefling... called Prudence. That actually makes complete sense.
Flint Luke I can’t tell whether you’re being sarcastic or not but if you’re being serious I completely agree with you. It kind of does make sense, at least for Jane. A tiefling named for wisdom, forethought, and good judgement. Prudence. I appreciate the irony of it, given her backstory of making a pact with Cthulhu out of sudden teenage pique. It’s hilarious. XD

I love the fact that Ellen is just casually wearing a cape like "Yeah, this is how I usually dress, nbd"
I once played a session where I was a halfling barbarian with anger issues, my brother was a half-orc bard and a friend was a half-orc sorcerer, so any fight would turn into a moshpit kinda fight, with me furiously punching people in the face, the bard playing drums and haranguing, and the sorcerer dazzling the battlefield with fireworks. "'Oh, that'd be the Mayweather residence, across the street. This is the Mayfield residence.' And across the lane you see a second mansion with a rather sizable line of people waiting to get in."
That lullaby has nothing on Nah Nah Nah Nah Nah Nah Nah Nah Nah Nah Nah Put Him In A Box, no one ever seems to wake up after that...
What shall we do with the drunken whaler though?
I suggest whiskey and cigars.
Even though it's not about video game, the video went just like a usuall chaotic ox video
I only just noticed that Luke is wearing a Life is Strange T-Shirt - nice.
I last watched a few years back, and only up to Episode 12. Now there's even more episodes to watch - that'll keep me busy for a while! The group dynamic between the OX guys is so whilesome and friendly - they really seem like great friends and not just coworkers.
Wait... Ellen has never played DnD? That's surprising since she seems to be totally into those fantasy rpg video games
I'm totally into fantasy myself and a big fan of rpgs, but i have never played D&D either (sadly)
It's hard to find a competent dungeon master, you know. How many people do you know actually read nowadays?
Have you been on the internet lately ? There are loads of creative people out there.
I’m the same an I’ve proudly never played
I'm a massive sucker for fantasy and only now, after 1,5 years, I've a group with a good DM and we're gonna start our first campaign next week.
4 minutes in and one character is a half orc with rabies. This is going to be incredible
When I first watched this 2 years ago, without knowing anything about DnD, I laughed like an idiot.
Now, having played almost every weekend for the last 9 months, understanding more of what they are saying and rewatching it all from the start, it's somehow EVEN FUNNIER.
Me, two months ago: Wow, this was really good! I hope they keep doing this!
Two months later, I've finally got through all their DnD videos, including the brand new livestream. XP LOVE IT THOUGH.
Wow this guy had no idea what he was getting into when he agreed to be the dungeon master for outsidexbox.
ugh...FINE...i'll watch it all again (as if i needed an excuse) New Oxventures Let's GOOO
Coming back here after the finale to see the humble beginnings of everyone.
If you're new, welcome to the most wild D&D series on RUclips. Take your time and watch a few episodes at a time. The series may be over, but that doesn't mean you can't join in on the fun.
rewatching for giggles, *sigh* they've come so far and yet they still continue to cause mischief for poor Johnny. Honestly one of my favourite series of really any channel
Coming back here for my monthly re-watch and I can't believe how young and full of hope Johnny looks
Can't wait for Mike to come in at the end as the all powerful sorcerer antagonist, intent on building the first known D&D zoo
danrabiee Or as Cthulu.
I would watch this every day for a year.
That potion really did a number on her husband; not only is he a chicken, but he’s a hen.
Watching the every episode Playlist, wish me luck! (Edit, three weeks later and I have caught all the way up, man what a roller-coaster)
The Venga Bus, a man-chicken, a spicy rat and an abusive pirate. If I knew D&D was this hilarious, I would have started playing years ago!
SteelAngelVikki It is. The craziest stuff always stuff always happens. One minute you're doing a serious dungeon in a serious campaign, and the next everyone is stealing all the silverware.
Only 7 minutes in I finally realize Ellen is sporting a nice ranger cape.
This gunna be gud
Coming back to rewatch these in 2020. Bound to get my spirits up, right?
Back again, it makes me laugh so much that the first derailment literally came in the first 5 minutes of the actual campaign starting. xD
"Baldness to koboldness" took me a second but nice.
