- For decades Denmark has been a symbol of the Scandinavian model and has prided itself on its high standard of living, its excellent social welfare system and its open-mindedness towards minorities (particularly foreign communities). In 2019, the UN declared Denmark the happiest country in the world.
However, in the last couple of decades cracks have begun to appear in the Utopian model. The wave of immigrants arriving from the Middle East has stirred tensions. The state tracks down illegal migrants, men, women and children, and confines them to detention centers. The country’s latest project in dealing with arrivals has been to place them on an island.
Between a model of tolerance and an identity crisis, is Denmark becoming a nation of two minds?

I was an immigrant from Iran to the United States. I have fully integrated and consider myself American. Don’t immigrate if you don’t intend on assimilating. If you want to keep your culture stay in your homeland and fight for change. Don’t go to another country and try to change them. I am 100% WITH DENMARK on this one!

Yea the problem is the teens and young adults that rape, kill and claim social security.
Integration should be demanded 100% but assimilation should be a personal choice. When people move to another country they should follow its rules and laws and use its language in public life. But that doesn't mean they should forget their identity, customs, religion and language and assimilate into another society. If they want to, no problem with that, but that should not be a demand. Problems arise when masses of immigrants flood other countries and reject even to integrate let alone assimilate into their new home. That slowly leads to inevitable tensions and conflicts, not only from prejudice-fueled far-right but from ordinary people as well.

There was a similar documentary I watched on Denmark's issues with some Muslims about a year ago. One thing that came up was a local politician talking about how Muslim parents were demanding that schools stop serving pork dishes in their cafeterias because they didn't want their children even in the same room as pork. The politician said that, that was pretty much the last straw for him and made him heavily against any more Muslim immigrants. He was disgusted that they were basically guests of Denmark and they had the nerve to demand that the Danish change their lifestyles and customs to accommodate them.
To some Muslims their religion is first priority and they have this entitled attitude to demand special treatment . That's how they create their own land . First they come as refugee or nice immigrant then demand separate laws and rules for them . They think they are above others and most holy people just because they are following Islam . The radical Muslims have supremacist attitude . They think only only their religion matters and only Muslims are humans rest are sub humans . Their goal is to spread Islam and dominate the world .

Their quality of life isn't stellar. In Denmark, there is a need for improved support for mental illness, alcoholism, and concealed domestic violence. The rates are alarmingly high compared to the proclaimed standards. The issue does not lie within the immigrant population. Scandinavian countries need to refrain from blaming immigrants for their societal problems.
I’ve lived in Denmark (Copenhagen ) for a few years. My experience with the Danish is that they are very direct with their views on anything and everything, personally, I prefer it. Once, I was queuing at the passport security check at Kastrup airport, and I noticed a man was arguing with the security guards, he refused to unveil his wife’s burka to the officer at the passport checking desk because the officer was a man, the husband demanded a private room and the presence of a security woman for his wife to lift the veil, one of the security guards then said to the husband ‘We don't make difference between man and woman in this country, and because you are now on Danish soil, so you obey the danish law or you can take the next plane back home’. I must say, I was glad the security guards stick to their principles.
Think I might add Denmark to the countries I'd like to emigrate to if the UK gets much worse.

Clash of cultures is a real thing. You cannot ignore or minimize major conflicting interests when attempting to integrate humans any more than with other animals. You cannot expect lions and lambs to ignore each other just because you think it would be NICE for them to GET ALONG. Most cultures have perpetual ideals that will not necessarily HARMONIZE. Islam belongs in Islamic countries, not in Christian countries, not in Hindu countries, not in Buddhist countries, etc. Intergration means you conform to the ways of the parent country, not you coming in to convert or subvert the ways of the parent country to your ways. I am an Indian American and I am a proud U.S. citizen. I speak English, have American friends, enjoy us holidays and festivals including obviously Christian ones (it does not matter to me). It’s part of the country’s culture and history and will gladly adopt it. It was my duty to learn about this country which I call my home. Sure, I can still incorporate my Indian culture in my home and family. But I don’t ever need to push my background on anyone else who does not want it. I am grateful and thankful for my life.

I lived in Denmark for 2.5 years. I visited my friends for holidays and I fell in love with Copenhagen so much that I decided to live there for a while and do my art. I have so much love for Danish people, all Scandinavian people in fact. Incredible manners, beautiful people, gorgeous cities, I love the nature there so green, I love the cafes, such a clean country, so much ART, music, festivals! Clash of cultures is a real thing. You cannot ignore or minimize major conflicting interests when attempting to integrate humans any more than with other animals. Why not immigrate to a country which is more aligned to your liking? When I lived in the Middle East , in one of the less strict countries I went to register my civil marriage in their version of City hall. It was summer and it was close to 40 degrees during the day. I approached the building wearing a Polo shirt and cargo shorts with socks and shoes ; upon arriving at the front gate I was told I could not enter due to my shorts and had to drive home change and come back to register my marriage . My point is, in their countries they decide what can and can’t be done and you have no say so why should it be any different in Europe ? Also it is extremely difficult , almost impossible for somebody to become a citizen of one of those rich Middle East countries no matter how long you have lived there, yet when they come to Europe they expect full rights and citizenship after a short period of time . That is not fair in my opinion and it should be changed . Also possibly , I don’t think headscarf’s should be allowed everywhere; at least not in schools and some jobs ; as it does not show a will to fully integrate into the local society in my opinion.

As an African here in Africa I feel like the Danish must protect their care free culture, it took years of hard work and amazing dedication to reach where they are. The fact that someone from outside has to just come there and change that freedom saddens my heart for them.
But I think the problem started when they took too many people enough to allow them to establish their own streets. Allow fewer immigrants such that they can easily be absorbed into the existing culture, and of course make integration a priority, or leave.

The mass migration out of the Muslim countries began with the US and British/French/German military campaigns from the Iraq wars onward. These Muslims landed on Europe mostly illegally. Since the USA and its closest Nato allies pursued those campaigns, it should stand to reason they would have to find solutions to the migrations they had caused. Denmark had no role in any of that. I agree with him 100 per cent. When you move to another country you adopt their ways, you don't try to change the new country. If you don't like it, then stay in your country with your customs and don't try to change others. Seems like Denmark is losing their peace for being so inclusive, what a shame!

Clash of cultures is a real thing. You cannot ignore or minimize major conflicting interests when attempting to integrate humans any more than with other animals. You cannot expect lions and lambs to ignore each other just because you think it would be NICE for them to GET ALONG. Most cultures have perpetual ideals that will not necessarily HARMONIZE. In spite of what anyone thinks would be IDEAL. The Danish government is obviously not willing to take on such a project and I think they have every right to not even want to try. How about we just move someone into YOUR house without your approval? Or do you not have a say in the matter without being ostrasized or accused of being racist?
