I'm a New Yorker, and I spent 7 months there in the 1980's. Even when Danmark was having problems, it was still one of the greatest nations I ever experienced. Tak Danmark 😊
Dane here. The ability to trust each other and the wish to be trustworthy runs deep. Saves a lot of problems. A little help at the right is a lot better than a little help given further down. It might not make all that difference. Danes want everybody to succeed. Not just danes but other countries. That is a win-win situation. If one wants a piece of "the danish happiness" I think a good place to start would be the kindergartens. Really seeing the child and supporting development of personality and interrelations with the other kids is what those years are for in the kindergarten I think. Alphabet and numers are learned by playing. Happy, independent kids with good relations will strive to be happy and do well as adults. PS: Hoejskole and efterskole is not free though it is subsidised.
Trust is by far the most important factor to a succesful society...in a proper family there is trust. Same thing. The Nordic countries are more or less the same when it comes to trust. Cheating or lying is a big NO NO... I guess in most countries in the World, people are much more egoistic...not a good recepie. I think trust within a society is one of the hardest things to acquire...Maybe impossible😢
Yea but lets be honest alot of their happiness is based on materialism they have high rates of depression and suicide also they are top polluter despite the propaganda they spew about being green and they have a massive issue lingering RUssia no thank you oh dont forget their utter shitttte weather no one with good education or businesses idea would go to denmark they go to usa because thats the land of opportunity.
From the bottom of my heart THANK YOU for hiring a local danish folk musician to compose the music. I noticed it immediately and it made me so happy. Danish trad music is a part of our culture that has sadly been neglected by the mainstream for a long time, but we are currently seeing an increasing interest from young danes. I am myself part of this "movement" and even recognise the composer by name. Whenever I hear danish trad music I instantly recognise it as something inherently Danish (which I know from living in Scotland myself that bagpipes do to Scots) and as an expat it brings me back home for a moment. You managed to capture the "feel" of danishness from the first minute in this documentary, making it standout from every other documentary about Denmark. Thank you!
Denmark is one country which actually pays postgraduate (master's degree) students approx USD$1000 per month as an allowance to continue their higher education. Even PhD students get stipends to do research. It's like doing a full-time job. What a fantastic country!
In US, PhD(I was one) candidates must receive scholarship as its against labor laws otherwise. On the other hand, less than 10% of Master's students receive scholarship based on their merits!
As an American, I always find it so silly that people in the US freak out over Danish tax rates but like...we also pay high taxes, the only difference is that we don't know where it goes and we get only a fraction of the amenities and resources that Denmark provides to its citizens. Just watching this is so depressing because Americans (again, as an American) are conditioned to immediately reject this lifestyle :( we're so unhappy lol
The biggest economy in the world that provides its citizens with nothing. Only propping up perpetual wars, spying on its people, feeding its citizens with GMOs and a whole list of other things
As another American I completely agree. That's where deep rooted culture comes in to play. Everybody says things like all Chinese people are brainwashed from by their government so the people are all the same. and we think that's a bad thing, I always say that I would love to live in a country where all the other citizens thought just like I do. That's why European countries can make such good progress. In American everything is based on blaming others and saying you want change but going against change when the opportunity comes up. We also don't let the majority rule. It just takes one apple in America to ruin or go against something and wham, project cancelled. We also lack empathy. It's a shame really. Happy for all you Danes out there.
this is not heaven so every country will have its pros and cons bad and good. but i don't like the way America can find Billions for proxy wars, no problem, but will not pay for higher learning to advance the individual which in turn would advance the country as a whole
As a dane I would rather use the word CONTENT. It's more precise. And I enjoed your video as it, in many ways, are more telling about our country than a lot of other videos I've seen. Good job, and Skotland will always be welcome to join the nordic countries. Think you will learn more from us than from the british.
Happy is correct, Content is something else.. Happieness has 2 words in danish. Lykke and glad.. And in this case it´s glad = happy. Content means tilfreds in danish, that´s got nothing to do with happy or glad.. Lykke or lykkelig is the fairytale version of happieness, = rare kind, u have sometimes, but not a daily thing
@@lailana3325 .. I would use the word glad instead of happy, because happiness is an elusive feeling, while being generally glad about not having to worry too much about most things, is not.
well none of us will be anywhere near independent as long as we are part of EU , EU is centralization of power, and around 70% of all laws are decided in Brussels, I would however love cooperation between free independent nations on trade, knowledge and peace

I had a Danish neighbor living next door to me in Cambridge, MA USA in 2012. He was the most beautiful guy I have ever met! He made me a homemade meal and also greeted me and welcomed me to the community! I only know his first name: Seth and I wish someday to meet him again.
Americans pay very high taxes, just by another name: Health insurance premiums, social security payroll taxes, college tuition, childcare, auto expenses (due to lousy public transit), high cost utilities. If you add this up for a typical American, our true tax rate would likely be 40-55%. The Danish get universal health care, childcare, retirement, free college, great public transit and subsidized heat -- all paid for by their taxes. Will the US learn from this and improve our society? Probably not, because we're so arrogant and think we're "freer" than everyone else. How free are you if you can't afford healthcare or retirement?
Healthcare in Denmark is shit. If you are sick your doctor will tell you to aet better when in fact you have cancer. And then you wait months and months to get to hospital. And the schools are free but that makes many students less motivated. We need to work until. We are 74. But we are lied to by our government all the time that we have the best of everything and no one questions it.
Just for fun i tried to add every tax together, that the average american pays (with the help of chatgpt, so ofcourse there might be mistakes) what i found was that when you add all those taxes together its not that far from what i a as dane pay (Usa tax 35%) my single tax is 38%.
@@1Atzek Do you have kids? My own calculations for US parents in urban areas (for childcare / daycare, increased medical costs, college costs (amortized over time), driving kids everywhere and supporting a kid's automobile due to lousy public transit) come to a more than 50% effective tax rate.
@@balkangetaway The most common cause for personal bankruptcy in the US is medical debt. In the US, if you go bankrupt, you can end up homeless. Many people don't even go to doctors for fear of the cost. When you're sick or have an accident, the private insurance companies attempt to deny you coverage on technicalities. Are you saying Denmark is worse than all this?
RUclips keeps showing me these videos because I did a lot of research for a roadtrip I did from Billund to Copenhagen, for one week, in September 2022. Two years later I am still fascinated by the country and I enjoy anything Denmark online.
You are perhaps gilding the lily just a little bit,but as an expat Brit who left his depressed town in northeast England in 1969 to live in Denmark,I can only say that Denmark is absolutely the best place in the world to live.
What’s the defining factors between that reason. I’m looking to move from my depressed city in 2025. Living in London for 20 years has left me cynical and bitter.
40% is high taxes. In the States, I pay 33% & don't get crap back for it. But at least a handful of billionaires, the auto industry, and military contractors are happy.
@@thespiritof76. But one does have a crappy deal in the US.... Did any one mention to you that danish employees get 6 weeks of payed vacation, 2 weeks of external training with salary, mandatory pension savings(that the company can not touch) And a mandatory government pension in addition to your savings
@@MichaelKaa-dx2hj Right. And at what cost? Higher taxes and less freedom from government intrusion. As usual you europeans only look at dollars and cents when thinking about these things. Most Americans get vacation, not 6 weeks, but who needs 6 weeks? Our economy is more robust, efficient and dynamic and our technological, scientific and medical discoveries and inventions are better than the Danish. Thats the benefit of not goofing off for 6 weeks with an entitled attitude. Are you sure you can afford 6 weeks of vacation? Aside from the expense of 6 weeks of constantly spending money there are other things to consider: Are you sure the workload won't pile up while you are away? What about a concern that you will “miss out” on something important? Do you think that your absence will be perceived as a shortcoming? Surely, you've considered that your boss might decide that you aren’t as essential to the operation as they had thought. Be honest with your response.

Being a Dane and watching this is like studying an outdated text book on a subject you really know. You smile at how simplistic everything is described. Lots of things are recognizable and somewhat correct, but described bluntly without nuance and in its ideal state. Denmark is not this ideal little pradise. We have a lot of huge challenges; our old citizens dont get the care they have paid their taxes a whole life to get because there are too many old, too little money and too few care workers. Many of our young have serious mental issues stemning from abuse of and on social media. Our education system is in shambles from top to bottom. To say nothing of the problems all other countries in the West also struggle with; immigration, environmental issues, city gentrification, achieving energy supply stability, etc. On top of it all we have run out of good people who wants to run for political office and are only able to recruit poor leaders with limited intellects. The best candidates prefer the quiet, well paid life in the private sector away from the prying eyes of the ever present tabloid media. No, Denmark is not as straightforward idyllic as portrayed here. Nothing rarely is. On a few days during summer it is pretty cool, though….
Whilst you're quite correct, all of the above-mentioned is also true of the UK and quite a bit worse than here. Yes, it's idealised, but we're still better off than the country she's comparing us to.
The SNP love to cherry pick anything that seems to work in other countries, particularly Scandinavian countries. They have reduced Scotland to a what is akin to a third national country..drug deaths, nhs, education, ship building… the list is endless…their only “success” is handing out baby boxes for new babies..thankfully the Scottish people are waking up to the debacle the SNP have created and hopefully the situation will change soon..
As a Scot I would instinctively agree with you. Very well put. PS A pity it is such a badly made film with that loud, tacky music obscuring much of the dialogue
As an American teacher, I initially balked when I saw a kindergartener operating a hand saw, until I remembered that the rest of the world believes that children learn by doing and that's exactly how it was in the country my own parents came from. Over here they safety proof everything.. Also anyone else notice that everyone is bilingual? After all, English is not the official language of Denmark. I think I like it there .

Lesley is a brilliant journalist and public commentator. This wonderful episode typifies her progressive vision. In 1986, I boarded a ferry at Harwich, England to Denmark and cycled from Esbjerg to Aarhus to view the museums at Silkeborg and Aarhus. Near all this journey was by designated cycleway. The presence of an integrated transport system was apparent, even then. How different to the parochial, one-dimensional, retrograde political vision of my country, the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom exists as a failed state, even its water sources conduits for the endless sewage discharges of off-shored, outsourced, private utilities. Corruption, vested interests, defenestrating austerity, political cowardice and short-termism admits no vision. Scotland's only future is as an independent state in an economic alignment with a Nordic bloc of nations. Thank you, Lesley for opening the door to the possibility of an alternative, vibrant, progressive existence.
Apparently the majority of Scots disagree with your rosy " vision " of Scotland's future. Going from 48 MP s to 9 (!) would seem to confirm that ?? Unfortunately we are stuck with them at Holyrood for another 2 years...before a similar cull can be carried out .
In Denmark we have seen an increasing government budget surplus. It went from a small $613 million budget deficit in 2020 (because of the covid-19 crisis) to a surprising $8.4 billion surplus in 2021 and a just as surprising $18.4 billion surplus in 2022. The full 2023 figures have not yet been released, but is shows a $9.9 billion budget surplus in the first 3 out of 4 quarters of 2023, despite a huge increase in military spending's and billions worth of military aid for Ukraine.
@@MacDaddy8200 .. Well, higher wages in general also = more taxes for the government, not least including a 25% Vat sales tax on everything. So when Corona and Russia made the prices go up, it automatically generated more money from taxes. But you are kind of right, because Denmark's biggest export is biotechnology and pharmaceuticals (from Novo, Lundbeck, LEO Pharma, Orifarm, ALK-Abello, Bavarian Nordic, William Cook and so forth) , in 2nd place is food that now has become more expensive everywhere, not to forget that the worlds 2nd largest container shipping company Maersk made their largest profit ever last year, and LEGO is always doing great no matter how expensive it is. The Corona virus did not change this at all, because when people were told to stay at home, then pharmaceuticals and LEGO is what would spring to mind, as some kind of comfort and enjoyment.

@@veronicajensen7690 .. Novo Nordisk may be a huge company but they "only" paid a bit more than $1.2 billion in taxes in 2023, so even if they did not exist, there would still be a huge budget surplus, as written above. Btw, Denmark do no longer need to buy any gas (or oil), because the Tyra gas field has now been renovated and is finally up and running as of this year. Not only will it cover all of Denmark's use of gas, but also make room for export of more gas through the Norwegian + Danish gas pipeline to Germany and Poland.
@@veronicajensen7690 .. As for Russia, it's not so much about the present sanctions, but that their gas is now being totally out-phased in Europe and also replaced with other sources of renewable energy, and not only for the time being, so even when the war in Ukraine come to an end, so will the Russia export of gas to Europe, and this export is lost for good and will never return, because Europe have lost every kind of trust and credibility they may have had in Russia in the past. So no more future import or export deals and no foreign investments in Russia, after they have confiscated foreign investments and companies.

It starts with strong leadership. You step out of line you'll be dealt with. In America we have too many foolish laws....everyone feels they are entitled, legal system is biased & literally in a mess. As a result, our values are in decline
If Denmark is so desirable, why is it not a hotspot for skilled migrants from leading universities across the globe, like New york, London, Singapore, even Zurich are?
@@val-schaeffer1117 it is a place that is very desirable, thats why its listed as one of the best places to live. Excellent documentary - and much more profound than other documentaries about different countries. Just one note on how Denmark has become so insanely rich: Pharmaceuticals took over the position as Denmark's greatest export items about 20 years ago (previously, it was food/farm products), headed by Europe's most valuable company Novo Nordisk, but closely followed by LEO and Lundbeck.
First of all; I simply love Scotland, not in the way our Vikings did, but with a bit of shame liking that many of your sayings are still a reminder of our “visit”. As a now pensioned wine & spirits manager for 48 years, I’m also deeply in love with your whisky - even if I was almost expelled from Islay driving around the island by Jim the famous master blender at Bowmore. After counting several thousands of sheeps pissing and seeing the muddy water in the small rivers, I dared to ask him, if they did’nt consider to slaughter them to preserve the islands famous 7 or 8 distilleries. Jim almost drove me down to ferry, when I said that. In retrospect, the sheeps pissing might be the secret behind Scottish whisky🤪 I was very pleased and proud of your review of 🇩🇰, which made me think that I should be more humble about all the things I take as granted living in paradise. I sincerely hope that some scottish politicians will get some inspiration from watching your experiences in Denmark😎
Lesley, This article cum episode is awesome. I am watching this video from Nairobi, Kenya. We are now in the media houses across the world over very ugly protests that have taken place in the last few days. Lives have been lost, property destroyed and livelihoods destroyed as well. It is all about the government's intention to table down a bill on taxes. I wish my fellow Kenyans could be able to watch this your video and borrow a few tips from there. Probably they will get to know how others have earned their happiness and security. I wish I could also be able to get it across to our president as he prepares to have a dialogue with the youth of this country. Someone tell me how I CAN DELIVER THIS! This is great!
We live in France and watched this evening, marvelling especially at how very different and less rigid the educational system is in Denmark. Quite eye-opening. Thanks!
I lived in Denmark for a few month and got to know it a bit. The biggest single difference I noticed (there are many) from the US is that Denmark has a sense of unity -- we are all in this together. I think that is based on a commong ethnic heritage, The US is the opposite: Competiton amid social isolation and outright racial animosity runs rampant in US society -- sometimes hidden a bit band sometimes not. I think that is the reason why Denmark is so happy and successful -- while we make movies predicting Civil War and Doomsday Preppers prepare for the Apocalypse.
Excellent fiilm. (as per all the other 'Nation' films Lesley has made) As per the 'World Happiness Reports' (see their website), which are extensively researched every year, Denmark and Finland have now been the 'happiest and fairest' countries in the whole world for the last 3 years in a row (and before that , were always hovering around the top 5 countires for over a decade) Both nations have the same size of population than Scotland, yet both don't have as much resources than Scotland does. The main difference is, under UK / Brit Nat rule, Scotland has all it's resources, wealth and tax taken away from us and then 'filtered' through the 'UK Treasury' and UK Government, who then hand us back some 'breadcrumbs' every year and then tell us to 'get on with it, and stop moaning about a lack of democracy' And all this happens in Scotland on top of the fact we can't even choose the governments we want or need. As an example, Scotland hasn't voted for a Tory government since 1955 (yes that's 69 years ago) yet we get Tory governments forced upon us time after time. And now the Labour party has become that 'right wing' it now looks like how the Tory party looked when the 'right wing' voters in England voted them into power in 2010. The Tories are now that 'right wing' they resemble UKIP, All in all Scotland can cure all this injustice , and it will be done by Scotland becoming fully independent so the people of Scotland get to choose what ever political parties and policies we both want and need. And yes, the way most people think about life in Scotland is very similar to our Nordic neiaghbours. Most believe in 'egalitarianism' and understand how much better it worlks. As human beings in general, we are by Mother Nature's design , beings of 'community' . This is the environment we all work best in (and it's a hugely important environment for children to grwo up in , and thus become responsible adults with a strong sence of comminity and of nature itself too. We look forward to becoming independent very soon , and we'll happily take up that open invite by our Nordic neighbours to join the Nordic Council and work alongside them all.

I’m immensely disappointed that they didn’t discuss the most important distinguishing feature in Danish society and economy: Worker Unions. Lots of countries have welfare programs, good education, and functional politics, BUT only Denmark and Iceland have a Share of employees who are members of a trade union higher than 2/3 (66%). This is, in my opinion, the only reason for our prosperity and all other positive effects lead directly or indirectly back to our high Unionization.
I suppose there's only so much to include in a short film on RUclips. I bet they discussed whether or not to Include the trade unions. She probably knows about the trade unions strengths in Denmark. Lesley has worked with many people regarding Scandinavian culture. I believe she has various academic qualifications regarding Scandinavian culture. She made films about Iceland Norway and the faro islands also, check them out.
Absolutely the Unions in the USA are constantly under attack from corporations putting shareholder profits of the rich over the well-being of their workers.

This excellent documentary highlights the failure of hyper capitalism and lack of a collective consciousness.

The Nordic countries are more or less the same when it comes to trust.

Thank you!
Thank you. We listened to a lot of Danish folk music and Henriette Flach's music was perfect.
Denmark is one country which actually pays postgraduate (master's degree) students approx USD$1000 per month as an allowance to continue their higher education.
Even PhD students get stipends to do research. It's like doing a full-time job.
What a fantastic country!
Yes indeed!!!!
shit no....i pay the taxes....i dint care if people got a PHD...i want nurses, polices....we lack all sort of skilled workers
@@larslars-g5n You clearly didn't take a higher education.
It’s an investment. Denmarks main business is research and all large sectors are based on having a highly educated workforce.
It goes to fund wars everywhere. There are two right now sucking over $100 billion that could be spent improving your society. Sad but true .
Correct.
Think you will learn more from us than from the british.
yes i would also say that content is more correct than the word happy.

You are so right!!

Such an informative channel. I'm new her and I already love your content. Niice. Keep up the spirit.
This was a really great video, very informative. Can we expect more videos like this about different Scandinavian countries?

I did not know a whole a lot about Denmark, this is awesome. Definitely on my bucket list to visit one day

Amazing doc and insight.
I think that is based on a commong ethnic heritage,
The US is the opposite: Competiton amid social isolation and outright racial animosity runs rampant in US society -- sometimes hidden a bit band sometimes not.
I think that is the reason why Denmark is so happy and successful -- while we make movies predicting Civil War and Doomsday Preppers prepare for the Apocalypse.
Yeah the US is a nutty culture. I visited & the lack of social cohesion was apparent.
Beautiful video and well developed topics!
Ville ønske at man kunne fjerne eller sænke lyden på musikken. Jeg har svært ved at forstå det hele i den larm.

Hello sanne
I lived there for a while and was anything but happy.
Danmark 🥳😜 my home in which i m so proud of 🎉🇷🇼🇩🇰
you really make me want to visit Denmark soon. thanks for this wonderful video
The main difference is, under UK / Brit Nat rule, Scotland has all it's resources, wealth and tax taken away from us and then 'filtered' through the 'UK Treasury' and UK Government, who then hand us back some 'breadcrumbs' every year and then tell us to 'get on with it, and stop moaning about a lack of democracy'
And all this happens in Scotland on top of the fact we can't even choose the governments we want or need.
These reports are just nonsense and don't measure actual happiness at all.
"Denmark stands among the top countries with most antidepressant users, with around 9% of the population prescribed these medications in 2021."
@@cyberfunk3793 Yeah, that's because we have free healthcare. Imagine the ten lower countries, if they were to give antidepressants to their population.
@@carstenhansen5757 Free healthcare exists in practically every other EU country as well, that don't have as many people diagnosed with depression per capita.
@@cyberfunk3793 That's not true. If you do not have a job, you're in trouble in some EU countries.
@@cyberfunk3793 you must have been so happy when you found that little piece of negativity, well done and I hope you are now as happy as a Dane.
As an American with advanced degrees, I believe the Danish designs for education are brilliant! 👏
Very interesting, watching from Kingston Jamaica 🇯🇲 👍

Love Denmark from Ireland 😊
Much respect to the Danes after visiting Copenhagen. I really enjoyed your city. I went for a weekend in late March last year (and saw people swimming 😅) and made a commitment to come back in late spring or summer!
Denmark looks like if The Netherlands had a scandinavian child. Greetings from NL.
Denmark is waaay older than the NL
@@LasseStaldMadsen Yeah i wasnt serious, it just reminded me of NL.
Both are equally racist. Albeit NL is worse. I would favour a rich racist DK over a poor racist NL
We are racist with a good reason
@@gieljanstouten Every racist thinks their racism to be legitimate. Your reason is that you, as Nordic Caucasian, is a superior breed of humanity: exactly what Nazis believed in.
Thank you very much for sharing such extraordinary information about Denmark but what I have found intriguing is about the amount of population cycling which is another amazing way of reducing pollution

This excellent documentary highlights the failure of hyper capitalism and lack of a collective consciousness. If the UK, US, Canada and New Zealand were less individualistic (ie obsessed with personal wealth) they too could have a more democratic society which gives everyone, young and old, rich or poor, a better fairer quality of life.
