Thank you for responding to our request from the other video where you did the demonstration of halftone. I am grateful that you actual read and appropriately react to the needs of your viewers. 🤩👍
A VERY important warning: After long and unsuccessful attempts, I finally figured out that the problem was the “color mode” of the work. The “Difference” option works differently in CMYK color mode, so if you want to do the operations in this video and succeed, your work must be in RGB mode.
Thanks for the video, once again providing a deep well of knowledge on this subject. Looking at the end results the transfers come out perfectly. It would be great to get some more information on how you get the areas which aren't half toned to show the threads of the shirt as looking at the real world examples you can see them merging the transfer and the fabric together really nicely.
Second pressing the garment helps embed the transfer deeper into the garment, parchment paper or T-Seal are your best option for that second press. Also, those particular garments had a "thicker" weave so it was a little more pronounced than usual.
Thank you very much, very useful video. I'm new to this type of work so I really appreciate it. I'm gonna try it tomorrow with my designs for t-shirts.
Dude, you have no idea how much of a life saver you are. Forever a subscriber. One question I have though. I noticed you always add a background to match the shirt. Is this also to eliminate the transparent pixels? I always thought you could make sure the image was rgb 8 bit to eliminate those nasty pixels. ??
If we're dealing with a transparent PNG like the flame, or something with a glow, we need the shirt color in the design to make the transition more seamless from the halftones to the shirt when printing. The rest of the time we're just using the shirt color to test and make sure the graphic still looks correct, otherwise its very hard to tell.
I have this one specific design I'm trying to halftone for a white shirt, but it has a outer glow around the whole image and I can't get the outer glow to halftone. I did it with the png file.
Great video w/superb explanation! Question....would Cadlink 11 do a color knock-out that matches this quality? And while I`m on it....would you recommend Cadlink 11 for the Mimaki 150 vs Rasterlink? ...and why? :) Thanks!
No, we're not big fans of any RIP software doing graphic design work. That said, we absolutely l LOVE CAD Link Digital Factory 11 for the Mimaki. It's auto layout and variable white underbase make it far superior.
hi thankyou and this might be an obvious question but how would you output this for printing when i saved file as a tiff it had the black background in the file not just what i was seeing in the layer etc
I literally just bought a program to do what you are doing here :( why didnt i see this until today!? Seriously loving all these videos your so helpful! Now is this particular examples printed on the shirt or is a transfer?
Your tutorials teach me so much, Thank you! I think I've got the halftoning down for most colours, but for some reason, halftoning a neon sign with a white inner and a purple glow, to go on a white shirt causes me to lose too much of the purple glow and makes my image look dull. I've done several attempts by adjusting the levels but it's just not coming out close to the original. Should I just print it with the white underbase under the glow, or is there a way to make this work? Could I send it to you to show me how to get the best effect?
send the file to jeremy@dtfsuperstore.com it might take a few days to respond as he will be teaching DTF Bootcamp for the next two days but he'll take a look at it and see what might be the best course of action!
Do you have a video explaining how to get the dots fully transferred onto the shirt? I struggle with that and I use a Geo Knight heat press that is reliable. Do you have specific film and inks that transfer the best?
There will always be some dots that get left behind on the transfer sheet. Halftones especially need the white underbase choked and if they are choked by 2 pixels and halftone dot 4 pixels or less will end up with no white underbase or adhesive behind it. Thus it won't stick. It's an expected loss that most of the time doesn't effect the overall look of the final garment.
Hi, I’m planning to purchase a photoshop for my DTF printer and I would like to make halftone effect, I don’t know which version of Ps i will purchase, can you please let me know. Thank you and have a good day
Hi! trying to do a white knockout on a graphic and got lost early on your step by step tutorial. At the 44 second mark, what were the controls to get the transparent color range knockout effect? any help would be appreciated!
@@DTFSuperstore So that won't affect the "Difference" blend mode in photoshop when I apply it to a gray background and unite it with the image? So it's not like white where I can invert it after I convert it to grayscale?
Can you use this technique to get solid edge pixels as well? Like for traditional screen printing? I really like way it looks but im wondering what would happen when you send these files through the rip?
I'm not sure what you mean by solid edge pixels but they work great with any rip. just test with different underbase setting and printer alignments and you'll be good to go!
You have to be in greyscale before you can go to bitmap. if you are in greyscale and it's still greyed out make sure you click on the the selection tool or press the shortcut "V" in case you are in a tool/mode that locks you from proceeding.
Do you know if this would work decently well with DTG printing as well? I'm planning to do some self-produced DTF stuff as well but I also like to use print-on-demand and a couple of the places I use on my old accounts I've had forever don't allow you to disable certain fabric colors so I'm kind of trying to find a "works on multiple colors" sort of technique, I know the blended colors won't match all but 1 of the shirt color options but thinking if I used some sort of neutral color that kind of goes well with lots of different fabric colors if it'd still work somewhat decent? My only worry is that white base layers would show up through some of the halftone patterns (in DTG) I know this works great with DTF as you're demonstrating... I want to use this technique but I'm worried I'll end up w/ stuff that shows the white base layer in some situations, I'm going to submit some designs and buy them myself to check but rather not buy a bunch of test shirts if I can just know ahead of time if it'll work decently enough. Great video, appreciate you doing this for everyone!
as long as the printer is aligned properly you should see any white underbase whether DTG or DTF. Definitely send a test graphic in first and see how that comes out. it's best to do the halftoning knock out with the color of the t-shirt. approximate might give you subpar results.
No, it's not possible with Gimp. However, check out this video, it uses Photopea which is a free online software: ruclips.net/video/pIUuooXMHjk/видео.html
Probably?? We've not tried it, however DTF Transfers are super durable so it will likely hold up. We'd recommend tie dying first and then pressing the DTF graphic onto the shirt.

after you greyscale invert the image. Command + i (Mac) or Control + i (PC) that will invert the white and black. treat is as normal, what shows as white will show through what shows as black will be removed. Everything else should work the same.
I think so is wrong with my Difference option.i tried to use the green shirt example. When I apply Difference it changes to yellows and other colors then after the halftone steps. It only knocks out only the black and not the green. It's in rgb mode
The green layer you add above the image and then use the difference blendmode must be the same color as the green you are trying to get rid of. If the green doesnt turn black you've done something wrong with the blend mode. then make sure you merge the two layers together before following the halftone steps

try using less white underbase, it will keep those holes from getting filled in. If it's still an issue try 30 or lower and see how that looks.

It's the same as our other halftone video done for black but just invert the black and white for levels adjustment and then invert the layer mask.
You could also use white as the color in this video and it should work properly.

Great video… When using this method for a white t shirt. Does your art normally lose a lot of color. If so, do you know how to prevent it?
before you do the levels adjustment, invert your image. So Greyscale - Invert - adjustments (levels). I hope that make sense.
