One of my favorite film scores by Alfred Newman. Very moving themes which had great impact on my life. Thanks to Soundtrack Fred for preserving a portion of this incredible music to enjoy over and over again!
Just discovered this great soundtrack thanks so much for putting it on RUclips...
Alfred Newman had a melodic gift second to none. His grand opening Main Title Theme, which backs images of huge dissolving white clouds and seagulls, is unbelievably beautiful, as is the rest of this expertly written score, even its darkest moments. Its director George Stevens ( 1904-1975 ) is deservedly legendary, and some of his discoveries in his camera work have entered film practice so subtly that only the most alert viewer will even notice it.
Alfred Newman has always been my most favorite composer in my growing up through the 50s and 60s, but the amazing music from Anne Frank really had a profound impact on my life even to this day in my
seventies. Your description of the beautiful clouds with the seagulls moves me to this day.
Being an impressionable, sensitive 17-yr-old, my main goal when I stepped into Dam Square in 1974 was to find "Anne Frank's House" and the Secret Annex. I will never forget the bookshelf being swung slowly aside for us to make the climb to their hiding place. It just happened to be on the 30th anniversary of when the Nazis, being alerted, stormed the annex to take them all away to their deaths; only Otto survived. I had seen this movie before spending the summer studying classical culture in Europe; my experience was raw then, and it is still fresh now. I not only wish I could return to see if the annex has been respectfully preserved, but I strongly urge people to go and experience this if they can. Thank you for this, Fred. God bless you.
I have to write to somebody about this movie DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, and I chose you, Nance Schmance because of the way you described your experience of visiting the Annex where the Franks once lived during the war. I don't know if I could have done that! Go to see that building and also look inside! I'm not sure my heart would be able to stand it. Even watching the movie, and afterwards having those pictures pass before my eyes over and over and over, is so painful for me. I saw the movie years ago when it first came out, and felt the same way, and then the Exhibit of the house and personal possessions came to my city of Cincinnati, and I went to see it, and after that the pictures, again, passed through my mind over and over and over! I am so sad about what happened to the Franks and friends - so very sad! I hate to think about it, yet I cannot stop thinking about it! The actors in the movie all seem so real to me and I love them for their courageous portrayals of the Franks and friends. How could such a think have really happened? I am appalled, still! Wars and killing is unconscionable!! It is not right!
I must add that the music - all of it before during and after the movie - is scintillating. It still sends shivers up and down my spine, and it is so very beautiful and melodious.
I forgot to add that I have seen this movie maybe four times, and again just today! I even recorded it so I can re-watch it again at will. Again, I cannot explain the fascination I have about all of it; the period of time, the war, the brutality of it, the massacre of human beings, and a person like Hitler! How could that be????
It's been kept the exact same, don't worry. You can visit this site www.annefrank.org/en/anne-frank/secret-annex/landing/ and look around virtually.
“The Diary Of Anne Frank” is one of the jewels from the golden era of Hollywood. It was very well received at the time and is still well known today. It deals with the true story of the German teenager Anne Frank and her family and happenings around them and the world, during the reign of the Third Reich. The movie was directed by legendary George Stevens, who never seems to disappoint. The musical score, which received a deserved nomination for an Academy Award, was composed by no one less than the legendary Alfred Newman. Enjoy!

Lovely work by Newman. Lovely work by Fred assembling this for us.
Alfred Newman had some outstanding colleagues but in terms of consistent output, he is champ.
I first saw this film on tv when I was 9 and I loved it. Anne and I have the same birthday. I have been a professional musician all my life. I know much about all styles of classical music and love much German romantic and post German romantic music. But oddly enough this sound track especially the highly romantic parts are my favorite German romantic music even though it is from a 1959 film score.
Dear Fred I remembered this score very well. OMGoddness those Newman strings. I hear pieces of some of his other scores, The Robe for one, and maybe a little of The Song of Bernadette. The second half makes a big change in it's pacing, it's probably scenes of them being quiet because someone is in the building. However, the beginning is so lovely this made me tear up as I write this to you the strings are bringing tears to my eyes. Thank you for this oh yes and the bells too just beautiful. This score has made my day✔
The girl who wrote a diary and became a famous book.
A great book and movie too.
One of the all-time greatest original scores. Only a handful of films have scores that blow you away the first time you see it--here is one. Composed and conducted by the legendary Alfred Newman, who was winding down his outstanding 20 year tenure as head of Twentieth Century-Fox's music department. He had eleven great years ahead of him before unfortunately dying just a month before the release of "Airport", his finale and another tremendous score.
Great stereo version of the suite. The cd pictured contains the intermission and exit music as well. Imagine having this guy as your father.
From 12:37-13:15 it's pure magic
I lose it there.
Jahrhundert!

I seen this movie years ago, amazing soundtrack even tho it sounds much more sweeter than I'd imagine her experience to have been. Thanks for posting
"She puts me to shame" -Otto Frank
Thank you for uploading this soundtrack. It's been in my head for awhile, glad to see someone took the time to post it.
Thanks so much Fred for posting this with such great sound quality. Still astounds me how Mr. Newman was able to compose such a stirring score fully able to meet and evoke the emotionally devastating impact, to me, of the film. Sadly many of the participants are gone but he, and they, have left behind a work of art that will endure many many years, and how many of us can say that?
Your newest Subscriber-for-Life offers a big two thumbs up for a fine job with this memorable score. I heard it on TV the first time the film played.
Thank you very much, William. I really appreciate it!
Best to you!
Fred
very emotional
First saw the movie/ heard the filmscore in 1964. Was haunted by the melody. I was 'convinced' it was something like Tchaikovsky with whom I was enamored at the time: Second movement of the Fifth Symphony and I felt other compositions. Frustrating because there was no computer access in those days.
One of the most intresting things I ever read had to do with Newman's professionalism. Around 1956, he went to Amsterdam to talk with Otto Frank about Anne. What what she like? What did she like? One of the things mentioned in the film was Anne's love of Hollywood films, So, if you notice at one point when Anne is getting her pictures of the Hollywood stars, there is a bar or two of "Someday My Prince Will Come," from "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," which Anne probably saw in an Amsterdam theater sometime in the late 1930s. At about the 8:40 mark of this suite, you wll hear that music. Newman's music for this flm was sublime.

It'll be the one that Millie Perkins starred in as Anne Frank
Probably Newman's greatest achievement. The poignancy is unbearable.
