- In this video I check out the James Brand 'The Palmer' utility knife which is a sleek, minimalist design utility knife available in vibrant colors as well as more muted options. The blade replacement method is patent pending and one of my favorite features of this utility knife.

I didn't take you as a guy that listens to other's reputation takes on companies. I've never experienced James Brand, but glad to see your view can change 👍Cheers
I’m not typically and definitely didn’t write them off based off of that, more that I didn’t have any exposure to them and never searched them out on my own so that’s all I really had to base my opinion off of. Either way though, glad Rich checked them out as I’m always happy to be wrong in these situations haha. Thanks for checking it out! 🍻
The James Brand has some awesome looking carabiners, check those out.
Great video! With your and Rich's endorsements, I think I will have to pick one up. Thank you for sharing.
Nice, definitely don’t think you’ll be disappointed with this one. Thanks for checking it out!
Definitely a neat little utility knife. Great video 👍
Thank you!!
Hey - I've watched a lot of reviews on this & I have one, so I've noticed on mine that while locked in place & in use there is some up & down movement on the blade, I'm wondering if there's something wrong with mine - or if it is natural, before I go buy another one, I'd like to know if it'd be a waste. Did you notice this? I love this thing I use it for detail carving so it's kind of important to me.
Hey, thanks for watching! I actually have two of them now, both have a bit of up and down play so don’t think a replacement will offer any relief there.
Looks great but why the heck does the blade only come out like a half inch
I’m not sure, definitely an odd choice. I’m guessing it has something to do with how the blade changing mechanism works taking up a lot of space but I’ve never disassembled it to see what it looks like so not positive.
Why do you need any more than that for a box cutter?
@@Moleskineman if there wasn’t a use for it then razor blades would be shorter
@@acshaw80 It's a box cutter. The blade is perfectly long enough for that. If you think the blade isn't long enough, then the tool you need is not a box cutter.
@@Moleskineman go work for a razor blade company. You could save them millions in material!
I like the overall design language for the James Brand. This one unfortunately I am not a fan of the overall design. I will be interested to see a long term review and how this fits into your EDC. Good video man!
I really like how simple the design is but definitely curious to see how I feel long term and also how the internal mechanism holds up after a bunch of carry and several blade swaps. Thanks for checking it out!
I think this James Brand is really a great fictional piece at a really decent price. I do really like their colors, and I really like the ones that you and Rich have.
What do you think comparing this one, the County Comm Madmax, and TPT ones? I’d really like to see a video on these.
As always Thanks for sharing.
That would be a fun comparison, I do like the size on the TPT better and definitely prefer the blade change on this one. The Madmax feels both similar and super different but would be a fun comparison to do at some point. Also really want to check out the Exceed Design Tirana at some point but that one is a folder so way different then these 3. Thanks for checking it out and the suggestion!
@@UncommonEDC Awesome, thank you. I hope they do another PPL TPT, and I’ll have to get one.
That new curator is crazy cool. Not only is it awesome glow green, but it has the tough guy on the back!
@@benjileather agreed, the glow green is the one I don’t have that I want the most so nice I won’t have to pay secondary and super cool that it has the tough guy on the back!
I wish it was just a tad bit smaller.
Agreed, would be nice if they could scale it down in size 5-10%.
Stanley 99e is a better knife, & it’s only $7
Great review but about 4mins too long
Thanks, it do be like that sometimes haha. You can actually play it back at 200% speed and it will cut the time down but if you’ve never watched stuff at higher speeds I would up it gradually otherwise 200% will sound too fast.
@@UncommonEDC that's actually what I did 🤣🤣
@@UncommonEDC it was honestly a minor criticism. I subscribed for future content.
@@AimForTheBushes908 no worries, I’m always open to constructive criticism. Video length is tough because some people want something longer that they can listen to in the background and others want just the basic info as quickly as possible but I usually end up somewhere in the middle (4-15 minutes depending on the topic).
Terrible knife they got my $60
Sorry to hear that, out of curiosity what did you dislike about it? I’ve mostly used it as a package opener and it’s worked well in that role for me. If you do any selling on Facebook, I think I saw a post on EDC Rehab b/s/t looking for one a couple days ago so you may be able to recoup some of your money on the secondary.
@@UncommonEDC no cut edge length and every time I try to cut something with it. My thumb automatically went to the button.
Haven’t had an issue pushing the button while using it but the cutting edge is definitely really short compared to other utility knives.
Super cool..I have the Coral but I really like that blue..I usually carry in a pouch elastic strap or pocket.I actually have it In my Alpaka Go sling Mini..the name “James” is actually a fictional character..
“This is actually our most asked question. James is a fictional character - a crossover of James Bond, James Dean and James Cook (who discovered the Hawaiian Islands). These are all people that would definitely need a knife in their pocket every day. People who would want a knife that looked amazing, worked great for a wide variety of EDC tasks and was just as well suited for the pocket of a tuxedo as it was clipped onto a pair of coveralls. These people are not Jim or Jimmy. They are James. They are committing to higher risk, but also higher reward, activities. Living a life that we sort of all aspire to live. We didn’t want to name the brand after any one person in the company because as a brand, James is an idea that is bigger than any one of us.”

I love the Palmer and the minimalist design..it doesn’t even look like a knife, which is cool..Thank you for the mention brother and the link..I totally never listen to the “knife community” lol when ever said community hates or talks bad about something lol I know it’s good..😂 love TJB the Carter is probably my favorite knife at the moment
Great video!! Thank you for sharing!
Nice, I really like that coral to, wouldn’t be surprised if I end up with 2-3 of these eventually haha. I did think it was interesting that the founders name isn’t James either. Glad you had talked about this and the Carter so I gave them another chance. Thanks!!
@@UncommonEDC Your welcome and the owner Ryan has a great vid on High Consumption..I’ve posted it I think..Your welcome
