WRT DURATION OF PROBIOTIC USAGE My daughter's doctor said it would take 3 to 6 months for her gut to heal. She had IBD-UC-C with celiac disease. This timeline made me decide to put my daughter on probiotics for at least 3 months. By this time, her gut was healing wonderfully, but she still suffered from lower degrees of "pain." Towards the 4th month, her pain level, which could have been regarded more like sensitivity, disappeared. I continued giving her probiotics but instead of giving it to her twice a day, only gave it to her once a day - just to calm MY fear of the pain returning. After the 5th month, we stopped using probiotics, and she has been fine since then (Nov '23).
@Carlos-fh8wk I'm from S Africa so we have different meds here. Im very intuitive, so I followed my gut wrt her healing protocol, and Dr. Ruscio's advice. Lacto-bifido blend of probiotics; Betavit - multivitamin supplement with free radical/antioxidants; Progast Natural Gastro Intestinal Support for Abdominal Pain & Cramps; Progast Butyrate; fish oil Omega 3 supplements; Prosit aloe supplements for constipation and to heal the colon lining; Frankincense essential oil with coconut oil as the carrier / castor oil - for colon messages - to lessen pain and inflammation and assist with regular bowel movements; vitamin D, iron and magnesium supplements. She was also on something like the Dr's Elemental food replacement drink for should not eat anything. Not all at the same time though. Her Drs managed her pain with NSAID drugs in the early stages.
I live in the U.K. and I've recently started to eat different probiotic foods from a small company called Loving foods. All organic and a huge variety. What I find is that my sweet tooth is void if I take enough probiotic foods. Also, drinking miso soup with lots of prebiotic veges has also been a game changer. Losing weight, less Sugar cravings, flatter stomach, clearer skin ... just feel better. Oh ... also added overnight oats to my morning regimen ... chia, oats, flaxmeal, dates, banana, fresh fruit, a free activated nuts and seeds, cinnamon etc. Prebiotic, high fibre foods are essential to feed the good bacteria. 2024 is the year of building a healthy microbiome!
Man you’re good. Really appreciate your contributions; well done! Regarding the anti-probiotics….follow the money, likely strong pharma influence….certainly not data driven. Signed old engineer.
Akkermansia was a game changer for my health after suffering for 3 years with acute migraines. I also now have less sugar cravings, eczema, Lower AP(b) and my capacity to tolerate rigorous exercise has increased dramatically. To my knowledge there is only one lab in the world making it for consumers because it is in fact an anaerobe so it is challenging to produce. I would also note that Akkermansia currently is somewhat cost prohibitive.

I had Cdiff in 2016 that caused dysbiosis. I have tried a few probiotics after. Culturelle (1/2 capsule) is the most tolerable. I have also been drinking kefir. Can you please do a video on how gut issues can cause shortness of breath? I have been struggling for almost 2 years with this debilitating symptom and i know it's related to my gut after taking unnecessary antibiotics. I also struggled with low ferritin and low B12. Was perfectly healthy before the antibiotics. I want my life back! Currently working with a functional medicine doctor and started taking Megasporebiotic which has been helpful. I've suspected SIBO, but haven't taken a breath test.

Wow great information - wish I had known all this years ago too! As an anecdote I suffered for years with IBS-C, histamine intolerance and insane histamine flare ups, bloating, cramping. Working with a provider got a GI-Map. Had overall very low commensals, but had quite high Akkermansia levels (this was prior to taking any probiotic). So in my n=1 Akkermansia is not protective for IBS.
Hi, I’ve suffered from hypothyroidism for many years. I’ve never had the natural every morning urge to poop. I have to drink lots of warm water with clarified butter sometimes and exercise to get to poop. I have very dry hyperpigmented acne ridden skin. My diet is very clean meaning only natural real food never anything from a restaurant or comes in a package. How can I help myself with the right probiotics? Will it he’ll balance my hormones? I do have joint pain, back pain, as well.
Why do I develop anxiety and negative thoughts and exacerbation of my hand pain ( undiagnosed) head pressure. When I take probiotic foods or probiotics. ?
Hey Doc How about a post on a day, or week in the life of probiotics? Do they only last for a day in your GI tract and exit with the food that you eat or do they manage to hide away somewhere and not exit after a bowel movement? Also, do they multiply while in your body and to what extent? 🧐🌄🦠🌇 If they are so beneficial to ones gut health, then surely one would want to have the best environment for them to thrive? Any advice you can offer to keep them happy will be appreciated.
Can you over do the different strain of probiotics? I'm eating super gut yogurt, mainly reuteri. I make homemade kefir and will start fermenting foods soon. I have SIBO. I won't take a probiotic pill though since consuming it in food or is a pill probiotic still useful? I just don't want to do over kill . I also want to make sure Sibo won't ever come back once i eradicate it.
