- In this episode, I'm covering a piece from one of my favorite game composers: Naoki Kodaka. His themes are iconic and the reason why I got interested in retro game music themes more than a decade ago. Streets of Desolation appears in Batman: The Video Game (NES) that was released in 1990 and of course based on the 1989 Tim Burton Batman film.

Can you please do Flugelheim Museum theme from Batman Mega Drive?
Imagine you’re hiring someone to score your game, and you’re like “yeah just do your best, it’s 8 bit so don’t worry about it too much, just get something on tape, it won’t matter a ton,” and the composer you hired comes back with this absolute masterpiece that is remembered and covered decades later, and is likely more fondly remembered by most than the game itself.
Absolutely right! The soundtrack stands out from the others at that time.

Heath Ledger’s Joker probably would ask the composer about the track ”why so serious?”
And the composer would say ”because it needs to be!”
it still sends chills to my spine.
And this cover does the same as well!

Katja, I cannot believe that you recreated this song! It is without doubt one of my all time favorite NES themes! I still have my original Batman: The Video Game cartridge for the NES and remember playing it over and over again when I was younger. It is such a challenging game but so memorable. I loved the dark color palette of the game and the music was so hauntingly beautiful. I hum this theme all of the time to myself and now I get to hear it beautifully performed by my favorite artist in the whole world with her signature touch of elegance and passion. I am speechless! I cannot believe the incredible job that you did in transforming this into a dark piano piece. I absolutely love it! Batman has always been my favorite super hero and this game played a large part in that. Thank you for being so fabulously amazing and continuing to surprise me time and time again. It is so wonderful when you cover music that has had such a significant impact on my life and I hope you always know how grateful I am for it. I cannot wait to hear more. Excellent as always Katja! As for my favorite NES game music theme? Ohhhh, that's a tough one, probably something from the Mega Man series...if I had to really narrow it down, I'd say Air Man's theme/stage music from Mega Man 2 (although the Wood Man theme from that same game is very close, since that was the very first stage I ever picked from the very first Mega Man game I ever played, so there's some nostalgia factor for that one, and it's also another catchy and memorable tune).
Air Man's theme is a wild one with a lot variety and even some jazzy vibes. You are not alone: Mega Man themes are amazing and a lot of gamers enjoy them. Thank you Andrew!! ❤🔥😊

Excellent cover of one of the best themes on NES. Most covers I've heard go in the opposite direction and make the song heavier and more metal. While that can work too, I think your interpretation better captures the emotional resonance of the original composition.

I always felt that Streets of Desolation could’ve always been used as an alternative Batman movie theme anyways. I love Danny Elfman’s Batman theme but this theme for me is a perfect companion piece.

Nicely done! After the first listen, I sped it up to 1.25% just for fun. At points it was almost a 1:1 with the original. This was an all-time favorite game when I was a kid. Still is. Laboratory Ruins is a favorite track. Sunsoft and Tecmo games had amazing music. Speaking of which...Ninja Gaiden stage 4-2 is an absolute classic!

My favourite NES music, I think it is some from Adventure Island 2, The Jetsons: Cogswell's Caper and what I remember of Little Nemo: The Dream Master. Specially because of the memories I have of watching my dad playing those two last games 😊

Wow, you slowed it right down and made it even more moody and sensual. With that echo/reverb creating a kind of dissonance. This is a superb arrangement. An introspective piece instead of the peppy tempo number it has to be in a video game stage. You can almost place this into the Danny Elfman Batman musical score. Well done! I'm glad I stumbled across this after looking up the original NES track.

Just like the Japanese musical composition "Streets of Desolation", I'd love to see a Japanese film version of Batman sometime - because the Japanese people often have a much deeper understanding of the things they focus on, things like the real reasons for the growing poverty and crime in big cities ruled by the merciless hand of capitalism.
And I'm sure Batman wouldn't just be a cheesy billionaire there, seeking revenge on the robbers who killed his rich parents in a heist.
They might develop a much more sophisticated story, for example where a city gets corrupted by greedy shareholders, real estate sharks and influential profit-over-life corporations who will stop at nothing for money and power, turning this city into a truly nightmarish, dark and hostile juggernaut.

I think I never beat the game because it was too hard for me, can't even tell how far I got, but one thing I sure remember and I always will, is this theme :3 right in the very first level so it's impossible to forget, not only because of that, but because it's such a badass theme :3 and you played it beautifully, and you are beautiful x'3

My favorite NES music is stage 4, from the game Sword Master. It feels as if running up the spiral staircase had a theme
Second to that would be from Wizards & Warriors III, when you rescue a princess. It gave me anxiety as a kid, that you HAVE to promise 3 princesses you're going to marry all at the same time, and it can't be avoided
Wizards & Warriors III... that's a deliciously twisted plot. Promising marriage to three princesses? Talk about diving into the shadows of moral ambiguity. No wonder it gave you anxiety. Sounds like the kind of dark romance I'd write a song about. 😅❤️

There is a huge audience for classic game music done like this. Interestingly enough a lot of those game soundtracks where made by classically trained musicians but had the restraints of the technology

I am 21 years old, I absolutely accidentally bought this game for the sake of the collection and did not have time to look back as it conquered me. Although in my childhood there was only Sega mega drive. Your performance of this music is also excellent. At the same pace as on the dendy.
