  • On the first race of the 2018 JJ Giltinan International Championship, Asko (James Dorron, Paul Montague and Harry Beithwaite) had a pretty good run (not the fastest of the day), showing some good speed and also how those 18 footers, despite our foiling age, are still one of the sexiest boats around !

    I would take watching this over foilers any day of the week.

    You have to have the right stuff to sail a boat like that. All three crew

    I bet they weren't too happy about having to pass through the camera boats wake at the end there. Lovely sailing though.

    I'm surprised at how stable the boat is. I would think a boat like this would capsize often.

      @johnmichaels2495 3 года назад +5

      It takes a very skilled crew to keep them upright. If the crew isn't extremely careful, they do tip over.

      @@johnmichaels2495 I'm a Hobie Cat guy, so that's why I think the way I do. btw, Hobie Cats can dump it too. For example, if your leeward bow buries, the cat can cartwheel or pitchpole.

    Why do they have the mainsail close hauled when they are reaching with the spinnaker?

    • @Wawotch
      @Wawotch 5 лет назад +6

      Because of boat speed. Sailing with 1.5+ times wind speed gives you an apparent wind as if going upwind. Planing skiffs with gennacker (asymmetric spinnaker) never go flat downwind, to produce more apparent wind.

    • @ollymetcalfe1
      @ollymetcalfe1 5 лет назад +2

      @@Wawotch ah ok, but how does the spinnaker work if they're going upwind?

    • @jastrckl
      @jastrckl 5 лет назад +1

      @@ollymetcalfe1 The spins on boats like this and cats like hobies are cut flatter. It's more of a reaching sail

    • @ollymetcalfe1
      @ollymetcalfe1 5 лет назад +1

      jastrckl yeah I get that but the sails don’t match. The mainsail is hauled in close as if they were going close to wind (apparent wind) but the spinnaker is inflated so they must be reaching not closed hauled

    • @Wawotch
      @Wawotch 5 лет назад

      @@ollymetcalfe1 No, it's too sloppy, too rounded, and has too much surface which creates too much lateral force which you cannot counterweight. Downwind, it also pushes the air to a flatter angle in respect to the mainsail
