The biggest lesson I learnt sailing skiffs is to be brave and always set the spinnaker. The boat is more stable with them. This is still one of the best displays of survival sailing ever!
Like most viewers it seems, I keep coming back to this brilliant footage and fantastic commentary. Nokia crew must have balls like watermelons, staggering.
Yeah. This about the most extreme sailing I've ever seen. Skiffs do work best with the kite up though. The kite adds some lift and stops the bow digging in. It was clearly the best decision. Maybe it just took some balls. Luv and Peace.
Anyone who has sailed a Skiff knows that a Gennaker actually creates a lot of lift in the bow and helps to stop the nose dives. Still ballsy as though. Much respect.
@@allistar6933 You'd be mental not to put it up downwind. The Gennaker balances the helm. It becomes MUCH MUCH easier to steer and balance the boat. Sailing an L4K we'd persevere upwind for hours then fly downwind with three sails in twenty minutes. Skiffs are so asymmetric... :-) Luv and Peace.
Never raced a skiff, but on E-scows in heavy wind, it's practically suicidal to do a downwind without a kite. Without it the boat is almost uncontrollable.
Always loved this video! Wonderful piece of sailing in extreme conditions! Out-sailed the rest of the fleet and deserve every accolade! I especially liked the leading boat for the series doing a great round the forestay whilst they were trying to show off": ;) The fish say the rest:)!
Stopping by again. 26 years later and this is video still holds up as some of the finest sailing you will ever see. Nice one fellas.👍

Love it this shit never gets old. The commentators are as good as the sailors.
absolutely the sailing is just insane and the commentators have complete "the boat is turning into a banana" energy
Holy moly. 2024 and I've never watched a video about racing sailboats. But this one had me smiling and appreciate what I was seeing!
Top Gun Jet Fighter Stuff!!!! Still, and always the best bit of sailing skill on RUclips.
I watch this every few months for inspiration. Timeless classic...plus who doesnt love the "Ripper Cam"?
The ripper cam is the best invention in the history of sailing. Only the comically long tiller extensions even come close.
People are unaware of how helpful genakers are at stopping you from nosediving one these conditions lol, amazing sailing
Seriously still one of the best sailing videos ever. You have to the kite because you'll just nose dive again and again
come back and watch my heros every now and then
Makes Americas Cup racing look tame by comparison.
This very boat is sitting at my boat club right now. Crazy to see it in this race
What's the name of the boat?
it’s the nokia skiff. it is at oklahoma city boat club
@@brocksmith5341 Very cool.
Is it abandoned and for sale?
I know at least one guy that would sail it with me.
@Brock Smith
In the USA?
Like most viewers it seems, I keep coming back to this brilliant footage and fantastic commentary. Nokia crew must have balls like watermelons, staggering.
This is why Nokia is always indestructible. I love this video its pre race motivation in reggatas :)
Epic! how did they manage to sail at all with balls that big in the way??
The problem with watching this video is that every other 'extreme' sailing video now pales in comparison...
Yeah.
This about the most extreme sailing I've ever seen.
Skiffs do work best with the kite up though.

Luv and Peace.
Have you seen Ragamuffin at 38 knots?!
@@johnwebb5879 yeah thats pretty extreme also. But thats a 100 foot yacht. Considering these things are 18 feet long I would say this is more extreme.
This is absolutely epic, even with the spinnaker tearing apart they never backed down for a second
The commentator could easily be father from Ozzy man :)
Great stuff.
INCREDIBLE team work !!?
Never gets old!
Amazing work guys. I absolutely love it when intuition works out.
I know it's gutsy and scary to do, but you can see how much the boat stabilises with the kite up as opposed to trying to go downwind 2 sail.
yes it was apparent on the water too.

where can one find the full race ?
*they always said Nokia phones are indestructible*
to bad gennaker isnt
I was waiting for this comment
@volvooceanrace you really need to put this one out there!
Don't need the spinnaker but put it up anyway: Keeping the sponsor happy.
and keeping the nose up!!
you are a fucking idiot. No doubt about it
@@thomaselliott573 what mate?
Nokia brave or not but people don't realise how helpful in condition like this genakers realy are
Definitely gave them a fair bit of lift ahead of the centre of bouyancy
Yeah especially with such low bow volume
It's still another 6 or 700 square feet of sail you've got to keep upright.
Im still surprised thier spin didn't explode!
Proper sailing! Brilliant :-)
International 18s. The fastest sailing skiff in the world.
sail to win!
Um. Good job but no gloves Nokia? I guess real men don't need skin on their hands. :)
Who needs skin if u have a shit ton of skill😁
Incredible
anyone got the full race?
5:21 the level of coordination
Best vid ever
How was the speed?
why is the video quality like in the 60ies?
