Wifi 5 and wifi 6 are both standards of wireless internet connectivity and both serve the same purpose but there are several key differences between them. In this video we’re going to have a look at what the most important differences between them are.
Please do subscribe if you haven’t already, it really helps this small channel grow.
Lets start with their names, both have other names they're commonly known by that we can see here. These names are based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers naming convention which named the first generation of Wifi as the 802.11 protocol and added additional letters for each additional generation of wifi.
Wifi 5 was released in 2014 and wifi 6 in 2019.
Now lets look at speed, wifi 5 has a theoretical limit of 3.5Gbps. Its worth noting you’re very unlikely to get any close to that unless you have an extremely fast speed coming into your router from your service provider and are in optimal conditions with no interference at all and nothing such as walls or furniture between your device and router..
Wifi 6 has a theoretical limit of 9.6Gbps but again you’re very unlikely to get this is incredible speed when connecting to a wifi 6 router for the same reason weve mentioned.
Wifi 5 uses the 5ghz frequency band only. Whereas wifi 6 can use both the 2.4ghz and 5ghz band. The 2.4ghz band has a lot of other household devices using it and therefor experiences a lot of interference causing slower speeds so being able to use this band may not sound like an advantage. However signals in 2.4ghz band tend to have higher range and are better at penetrating walls than 5ghz signals. This means you can stay connected to the wifi from further away with wifi 6.
Wi-Fi 6 is more efficient in handling multiple devices and high-density environments compared to Wi-Fi 5. This makes it far superior in environments like busy offices and airports where you may have over 100 devices connected once.
Another feature wifi 6 devices have over wifi 5 is that they may see improved battery life. This is due to a feature of wifi 6 known as target wake time. Smart home sensors will benefit the most from this as they can schedule their wake times more efficiently. Instead of staying awake for extended periods, waiting for communication opportunities, they can synchronize their wake times with the access point or router. This is not possible on wifi5.
Both wifi 5 and 6 are backwards compatible with older devices, if you want to check which generation of wifi your device or router supports google the tech specs and check which standard it uses. Remember it may be referred to by its 802.11 version rather than saying whether its 5th or 6th generation. I’ve left a link to my recommended Wi-Fi 6 router in the description if youre looking to make the upgrade yourself.
Which standard of wifi do you use at home? Let me know down in the comments and please do subscribe if you enjoyed this video and thanks for watching!

I didn't even know there was a difference. Due to this video I have seen we use WiFi 6 as 2.4 is currently set as frequency

Just got a Linksys AX1500 WIFI 6 router for $39 a few days before this video was released. I kinda trust Linksys more than TP-Link and like the setting menu better. I could be completely wrong to believe that and not an expert, so trust the expert.

Wow that’s a great deal! Yes the user interface is much easier to navigate on Linksys routers I find

@@techindex1 If I may suggest, make a video on WIFI 7 routers with comparison with 6 and 5. They are still new and expensive, meaning much higher payout from affiliate sales for you. And it's a new thing, so more people will search about them. Also touch on the mesh network topic, as I'm sure even less people know much about it.
You're videos are very well put together and informative, but make sure they also sell you affiliate products.
Feel free to delete this comment after reading, as this kind of advice is not for everyone to see.

Linksys used to be great, but these days they're garbage. I've heard ASUS routers are the way to go these days if you're looking for an off the shelf all-in-one. My own personal preference is to build my own router using pf/opnSense and dedicated WAP(s). Much more flexible and reliable. Gives you the option to upgrade each individual component of the system independently rather than throwing the whole thing in the garbage and replacing it any time you want to upgrade any part of it. It's pretty much just as easy as setting up an off the shelf solution, and ends up being cheaper and easier in the long run to keep it up to date. You'll never again need to configure a whole new device just to upgrade your Wifi or link speeds or add new features. Trust me, it's the right way to go.

@@Zaphod0414 Asus are probably the third most popular brand on Amazon, which backs up your theory. But they are the most-expensive of the first 3 too. I guess for a reason. And since Linksys are currently the cheapest, that backs up your second theory that they are subpar.
Building one myself is way above my head. I never came across tutorials for how to do it. Didn't even know that's possible. It's only easy for you because you know this stuff and have the time. But I personally wouldn't spend a week trying to figure it out and troubleshoot it, instead of buying one for $50.

We just got 100mbps fiber optic because we don’t need fast internet. We first agreed to lease ziply’s router with wifi6 but we have a linksys EA7450 lying around that we own. Does it really matter at this low of speed if we can get same internet speed in our townhouse? I’m thinking I just return the Ziply equipment. Thoughts?

    • @techindex1
      @techindex1  3 месяца назад +2

At this kind of speed you're less likely to notice a difference in speed but you may notice the increased range if its a larger house. If you can I'd test out both before sending one back
