Generally your experiences mirror mine with this lens. I do a fair amount of architectural, church interior stuff and I find the optics, and the geometric corrections on a Fuji T3 give a really natural "you see what's really there" picture. And in crowded and confined UK streets it's become my goto for people in their environment street photog.

I love this lens as well have had 2 copies over the years the first one took a dive over a cliff and ended in the sea! Use mine for landscapes and usually on a tripod . Funny one of your negatives is one of the things I really love about it the clutch focus change from manual to auto . Shame not weather sealed but mine has held up well over the years even with some many coastal shoots and constant coverings from sea spray. Nice video all the best
Hi Paul, just wanted to say this video is really helpful. I think I'm going to delve into the fuji mirrorless world for the first time and have been looking for a good lens to start with. Think I may have found it. Thank you and be well.
Hey Derek. I am glad this video was helpful for you. The only real downside of this lens is the loose aperture ring -- and I think that is depends which individual lens you get. I used this on a photo shoot the other day and the clients instantly liked the images from this lens compared to others. I hope it works out well for you. Good luck!
Love your photos with the lens and i am thinking about getting it - most of the case instead of my 10-24mm - would like to have a much more compact lens. Also do not want the new 13mm Viltrox 400g heavy thing.. ;-)
Hi Bischof. Thank you for your kind words. It is a great lens and not that big. Here in Japan, I see great prices on them used -- maybe you can find a good deal where you live. The biggest weakness is the loose aperture ring. There might be copies with stiffer rings than others. Fuji often corrects things in later production runs. Have fun with it!
Hey Laika. Thanks for your comment. Apologies for my late reply. It has been a very busy spring. I am glad you like that lens. With lenses, it usually doesn't matter how old they are, as long as they work. There's great glass with the the 14mm -- and it is not too big. Have fun taking pix!
Great review cheers Paul, lovely Images too. I did some research so this confirms my choice. I just modified an XPro-2 to shoot infrared love it but the lens I have is the 23mm which can be a tad tight for me, examples on my channel, so the 14mm will be awesome, it also performs well re. limited IR hot spotting, from what I've read that's only lightly noticeable after F/11. I bought a used 14mm just now for a great price happy as larry. cheers liked and subbed.
Thanks! It is a great piece of glass, although the loose aperture ring can annoy me. See if you can get an excellent quality used one. That would be good deal.
This 14mm is going to be in my kit very soon. Viltrox launched a very good 13mm f/1.4 lens, which is probably speriour to the fuji's 14mm, but the size and weight realy makes a difference for me. Also that MF clutch looks very handy. Thanks for the video.
Hi Allen. Thank for your comment. Yeah, the 14mm is has got great glass. The biggest downside is the loose aperture ring. It messed me up the recently on a gig. See if you can get a copy that has a stiffer ring. After playing with some at a camera store, some copies are better than others. Good luck!
Nice video. I consider getting it despite I have the 16mm 1.4 and Samyang 12mm F2. The latter one isn't that great when you risk flaring and such, it also doesn't AF.. Subbed
Thanks, TAN KIM! There are so many hats to wear having a RUclips channel: writer, editor, producer, director, stage hand, lighting guy, sound guy, the talent, B-roll creator, studio photographer, video editor, graphics person and social media maven. I am learning lots!
Hey Paul, love your channel. Can you comment on the 18mm F2 lens? It gets a bad rap, but I'm still on the fence on whether or not to buy one. Thank You!!
Hi Pamela, thanks for your comment and your kind words. The 18mm f2: It is a very good lens but not a spectacular lens like the 56mm. And I still like it. It is one of the original three XF mount lenses and it shows in the mechanical part of the lens. The aperture ring isn't very smooth and the autofocus is a loud ZZZZZZZZZZZZT. And this is a lens where the image quality changes a lot depending upon the f-stop. At f2, the center part of the frame is sharp (imagine a circle covering about 50% of the frame in the center). As you close down the aperture, this circle of sharpness gets bigger with each click until you get to f5.6, when the whole frame is sharp. This is similar to lenses of older generations. This gives the images from this lens a special "character" as opposed to being digitally perfect. It might have been the intent of the lens makers. Nonetheless, I still own and use this lens. I really like the focal length. It is wide but not too wide. Perfect for shooting people. And I LOVE the size. It is so small and easy to carry. This is more of a documentary lens when absolute image quality is not the most important thing. (Shocking, but sometimes there is more to life than pixel peeping. LOL). This lens was one of the reasons I jumped from Nikon to Fuji. I was using Nikon DX cameras because of the size and they refused to make a 28mm equivalent lens. They wanted everyone to buy their FX cameras. Grrrrr. So, it depends on how you want to use this lens. It is not good for landscapes, etc. if you want to blow up huge prints that are technically perfect. (That is for the 14mm). I have sometimes thought about trading this for the 16mm f2.8 -- but then it is too close to the 14mm for me, so I keep it. It would be great if they updated it to make it like the other small f2 lenses, especially the AF system. If you do buy it, don't buy it new. Get a used one in excellent or mint condition. I hope this helps. You have just helped me write my review for this lens. Now I just have to film it and edit it. Ha ha ha! Thanks! PS: Check out Nate at yomadic.com. He has traveled to many, many countries and he carries only the 18mm f2. Being there with something you can carry is more important than lugging a heavy, expensive monster lens. www.fujirumors.com/700-days-54-countries-x-pro1/
Thank you for the video. If you were to choose between the 16mm & 14mm, which one would it be? I’m on the fence right now, I hope you can share your perspective. Thank you
Of course, you have to make your own choice. It all depends what kind of photos you take. - The 14mm is more about wide and perspective. It is a more difficult lens to use well. The loose aperture ring is a weak point. I often bump it out of position and it screws up shots. It is frustrating. But the glass is awesome on this lens. It has the older AF system. This is one of Fuji's oldest X lenses. - The 16mm f1.4 is about f1.4. If you need the speed and you like the close up, wide open look, this is your lens. The glass on this lens is also apparently great.16mm (on Fuji) could be a good all around lens. It is big by Fuji standards. It has the older AF system. (I have not owed this lens). - The 16mm f2.8 is small and light with apparently pretty good glass (but not as good as the f1.4. It is 2 stops slower than the f1.4, but it is also much smaller, lighter. I am actually very interested in this lens. I moved to Fuji because the small size. It has the modern AF, so it would be good for video -- which is now important to me. (I have not owned this lens). I still have my 14mm. I have toyed with selling to get a 16mm, but I haven't done it. Sometimes I need something wide. Actually, the next lens on my list is a 16-80. I wanted a good all around zoom. Matched with the 56mm 1.2, I can do a lot on my client photo shoots. I hope that helps.
It took me over 1/2 hr to figure out about the "clutch" focus mechanism to the point I started thinking mine was broken... Didn't bother reading the manual cuz a lens is a lens is a lens, right? Anyway, I'm super happy now
Glad to hear it laika. I used to think the clutch focus was kind of a pain because sometimes I would accidentally pull it into MF when I wanted to shoot AF. But I find it very useful for presetting the focus -- for example when I do night photography shots on a tripod. Set the aperture to f11 and the focus to 2 meters -- pretty much everything is in focus. Have fun taking pix!
@@PaulCrousePhoto Absolutely! I had not used that depth of field scale since my good Minolta X-700 + MD lenses days, and like you say, it's an absolute "killer". Thanks for your kind reply. /My fun and good times is in taking pix, organizing them, editing them, mix n matching, and watching them. 😊
Hey Nomadic. I don't use my Fujifilm cameras for video (I am using a Sony ZV-1), so I am not the best guy to give you an opinion -- but I will anyway. You can use the 14mm for video, but the old focusing system might be a problem. I think the 16mm f2.8 will work better for video with its newer, faster, and quieter AF system. There is less chance to hear the focusing motor with the 16 and the AF will probably grab and hold focus better. It is also lighter weight. I have heard that this is a great lens and it is on my shortlist of gear I want to get, but I have not used it other than playing with it at a store. The focus clutch on the 14mm can be useful to manually focus video, which is how I used it the few times I made videos with my X-T2, but that is totally old school. I used a tape measure to help set the distance for talking head videos and set the lens to f8. I bought the Sony soon after. After using the Sony, I can say that swift, quiet and dependable AF is really important in video. I would say that the better AF on the 16 would outweigh the wider field-of-view on the 14 for video. Take a look at this RUclips video. It shows the Art of Photography guy using an X-S10 with a 14mm on a gimbal. I hope this is helpful for you. ruclips.net/video/JLJ-od_Gouw/видео.html
Hey J The Drifter. I apologize. Many of my replies to people's comments here on this channel have not shown up. So, I will try again. This is an interesting question. The biggest issue would be the focus. It has the old focusing system, which is not designed to work with video. So it will probably hunt and be loud. But, you could easily set the focus manually with the focus clutch. (I have done this before). Honestly, a 16mm f2.8 would probably be better because of the newer AF system. Good luck.
Hi Russell. Thanks for your feedback. I am sorry, but I am not that sort of photographer. I am more concerned out the final image than all of techincal details. I come from the film era when none of this info was available. What I can say is that I mostly shoot jpegs (or RAW + jpeg when need be) with the Provia film simulation at -1 Shadows and +1 Sharpness. I put almost everything else at auto. I usually shoot in A mode or P mode (blasphemy to so many RUclipsrs) and use the exposure compensation wheel all of the time. Of course, I use manual or S mode at the appropriate times. I try to let the camera do the heavy lifting. I will consider what you have said for my upcoming videos. I sincerely appreciate the feedback.

So you don't own a car? Lucky you. I own a car, a bike, a bicycle, and I'm still running late, course the traffic over here tents to be terrible, and public transport sucks...
Thanks for your comment Tomislav. I am sorry to hear about the traffic and the bad public transport. I used to take lots of pictures of traffic accidents as a local newspaper photographer and had lots of close calls, so not having a car releases me from a lot of stress.
I apologize. Many of my replies to people's comments here on this channel have not shown up. So, I will try again. I have not had a car in 27 years. One of the things I like about living in Japan is the amazing public transportation system -- although it can get crazy crowded. Fortunately, I get around a lot on my bicycle. Some days, I complain to myself about cycling in a heavy rainstorm, strong winds, or blazing heat -- but for the most part, I really like not having a car.
Hi Luiciano. I apologize. Many of my replies to people's comments here on this channel have not shown up. So, I will try again. The aperture ring on the 14mm can get frustrating. I was on a photo shoot the other day and it became a significant problem. I had to go back and re-shoot quite a few photos because the aperture slipped from "A" to f22 (and the ISO shot up too high). It is making me consider finding a replacement. While I love the glass, I need to have confidence gear doesn't change settings on its own.

Oh no! You dropped it in the sea? I heard Homer Simpson say "Doh!" when I read that. Thanks for your kind words.
Fuji really needs to update this lens after 12 Years.
Yup, but I doubt that they will. I don't think they sold many of these.
I just got it to partner my xh2... didn't realize it had been THAT long in the market. No complaints, however
Hey Laika. Thanks for your comment. Apologies for my late reply. It has been a very busy spring. I am glad you like that lens. With lenses, it usually doesn't matter how old they are, as long as they work. There's great glass with the the 14mm -- and it is not too big. Have fun taking pix!
Aside from the field of view, does this lens have the same characteristics as the Moment Lens Wide V2 and the lens character ?
I can’t comment since I know nothing about the Moment Lens Wide V2.
Hey Paul. Great! I am glad my video was helped you make a good gear choice. Have fun with it!
can't wait mate gonna do some damage with that thing haha @@PaulCrousePhoto
Stunning images. Inspirational stuff! makes me want to go buy that lens 😄
Thanks! It is a great piece of glass, although the loose aperture ring can annoy me. See if you can get an excellent quality used one. That would be good deal.
the 14 f/2.8 fuji lens is also known to work well for infrared modified cameras (no hot spots).
Thanks, Darin. I did not know that.
Good luck!
This is a good lens for infrared photography too as it does not suffer from hotspots.
Hey Alan. Thanks for this info, I did not know that.
Thank you for the explanations
You are very welcome, Jan-Martin.
i ordered mine quite cheap from Japan, i like it, but somehow use it way to rarely 😢
Hey Martin. Thanks for your comment. Well... how about just putting it on the camera and leave you other lenses at home? ;)
Excelente más videos por favor Paul
Gracias, Juan. Más videos están en camino. He tenido que ocuparme de algunos asuntos personales recientemente.
Paul , I enjoyed your video and appreciated those old classic lenses in your kit - they are truly amazing .
Thanks, Carmen. If something is made well, it will last a long time.
Nice video. I consider getting it despite I have the 16mm 1.4 and Samyang 12mm F2. The latter one isn't that great when you risk flaring and such, it also doesn't AF.. Subbed
Thanks, Aleksander. Since is it not such a popular lens, you can find great deals on used ones.
Great channel!
Thanks, TAN KIM! There are so many hats to wear having a RUclips channel: writer, editor, producer, director, stage hand, lighting guy, sound guy, the talent, B-roll creator, studio photographer, video editor, graphics person and social media maven. I am learning lots!
Hey Paul, What do you use for shooting RUclips videos? thank you
Hey Nick. I am shooting with a Sony ZV1 with a Rode Video Micro shotgun mic. It is very easy to use.

@@PaulCrousePhoto THANK YOU so much for the info and for taking the time to answer my question. This lens sounds intriguing .

@@PaulCrousePhoto HI PAUL, I purchased the 18 f2 in excellent condition. I've been shooting street with it and I LOVE it! THANKS !!!
@@pamelasmith8652 Great! I am glad to hear it! Have fun!
@@laika25 Cool!
Would this lens work well with the Fujifilm x-s10 for RUclips videos? Mostly on a tripod.

Good luck.
Would love to know the EXIF info of the pics you've taken in this video

The loose aperture ring is my biggest complaint about this lens. Thanks for your comment.
